IV. KEY CONCEPTS:

A Short Story is a brief work of fiction, usually less than 10,000 words that aims for unity of theme, effect,
and characterization. Its basic elements are: Setting, Character, Plot, Conflict, and Theme. To analyze a short story,
we should understand its purpose and find out its basic methods and materials. The purpose of fiction is to embody
certain truths of human life in a series of imagined incidents which bring about the theme of the story. This means
that the writer seeks not merely to entertain or amuse but to present significant aspects of life by presenting to the
reader true to life characters and actions. A story, although it deals with the lives of imaginary people, is no less true
than the best history or biography that record the actual facts of human life.
A short story relates a series of events. The word series implies more than succession. It is not only
chronological but also logical relationship. The logical connection implies cause and effect in a series. Events in life
appear as a succession, not as a series; that is, one incident seems to follow immediately in time but does not seem to
be linked to the law of causation. A transcript of life, like a diary, is not a story; the events are related
chronologically, not in the relationship of causation. This is the difference between life as it actually happens and life
as it is artistically represented in a story.
