GEA CAIRplus Areas of Application
Equipment Structure and Function

GEA CAIR units are used for energy-saving room ventilation. Because of their modular
design, the units can be configured individually for special air treatment requirements.
Depending on the application, the transported air can be filtered, heated, cooled,
humidified and/or de-humidified. The aim is to achieve the air volumes and air qualities
demanded by the client.
Primarily, GEA CAIR units are used at a central point in the comfort and
commercial/industrial sectors for transporting and treating "normal" air. Special vari-
ants can also be used in the clean room and hygiene sectors, for example. GEA CAIR
units with special explosion protection and compliant with ATEX Directive 94/9/EC are
specifically identified as such. These units are supplied with additional operation
manuals, which must be considered carefully in each case.
Various components, such as rotary heat exchangers, plate-type heat exchangers,
heat pipes and liquid-coupled heat exchangers are available for heat recovery and par-
tial moisture recovery.
The units are available in different sizes and different capacity classes: Depending on
the type, GEA CAIR units can be installed with vertical or horizontal air flow and either
as double deck, side by side or straight through arrangement. Units are available for
indoor and outdoor installation.
The modular design of the GEA CAIR units means that they can be divided
into delivery units to suit the access openings. Because of the different unit sizes avail-
able and the possibility of ordering the units in small delivery quantities, GEA CAIR
units are also suitable for the modernisation and retrofitting of existing buildings.

Equipment structure and function

Because of the modular design of the units and the different applications, many unit
configurations are possible.
The basic unit structure and its functional description are described below based on
examples.
Fig. 1 shows a GEA CAIR unit that is used exclusively for transporting air. The unit con-
sists of a casing with basic frame, fan unit, damper on the fresh air side, flexible
connectors on both sides and a service switch.

Service switch

Supply air Fresh air

Fig. 1: Unit for transporting air

Supply air and exhaust air units can be combined. With these units, the return air can
be mixed with the supply air (completely, partly and/or occasionally), for example. This
is mainly done to save heating and cooling energy.
The unit illustrated in Fig. 2 is a combination of an exhaust air unit and a supply air unit
with additional filter and heater unit. The units are connected to each other via mixing
air sections.

Casing GEA CAIRplus

Air handling is an important issue for architects, planners and plant engineers. Our new
CAIR range of air handling units will help you to meet the needs of your clients in the
best possible way. CAIR stands for Customized Air. This new generation not only
offers an optimum modular grid size and range of variants, but it is also easy to install.
Casing
GEA CAIR are air handling units of a particularly robust and thermally-optimized frame
construction for "air treatment systems".
The casing construction is a combination of aluminium profiles and panels. This type
of structure means that the unit can even be assembled completely on site in special
cases. All panels, doors and flaps can be fitted and removed from outside.
The S series (panel thickness 30 mm) and SX series (panel thickness 50 mm) offer the
best possible technical parameters for the requirements concerned.
In the case of the SX series, a thermally isolated variant is also available. In addition
to a completely isolated variant, the Lplus software makes it possible to isolate just
those parts of the casing where there is a risk of condensation.
The galvanized steel base frame available as an option (standard from unit size
160.160) gives the system additional strength and makes transport easier. The base
frame also has feet - available in two heights - with levelling device and rubber damp-
ers, so that the CAIR units can be installed even without a supporting structure on site.
Up to the unit size 128.128 inclusive, the feet can also be used without a base frame.
The casing structure is strengthened and stabilised by a set of intermediate profiles.
Each of these profiles can be removed without any problem. This considerably simpli-
fies the installation and removal of large components.
The completely smooth inner surface, without any projections, makes the unit easier
to install and maintain. There are no door locks or internal panel bolts to hinder clean-
ing of the units.
Large service doors and panels with sash fasteners make the components easy to
access. Removable heat exchangers, droplet eliminator, etc. are also available. All
maintenance and hygiene requirements according to VDI 6022 and VDI 3803 are met.

GEA CAIRplus Casing
Profile Variants

Profile Variants

The GEA CAIR casings are based on the principle of a frame construction: the result-
ant cuboids are completely enclosed by a profile. All profiles are screwed together via
stable diecast connectors.
If required, intermediate profiles which accommodate panels, doors, flaps, etc. are
located between these frame profiles. The profiles are made of aluminium.
Basically, two series are available:
– The SX series with a profile thickness of 60 mm, which can also be thermally
isolated by means of plastic webs.
– The S series with a profile thickness of 40 mm.

GEA CAIRplus Brief Description of Components
Heat Recovery

Heat Recovery

Heat pipe (ECOSTAT)

– In the case of the GEA ECOSAT, the heat is transferred through a medium (refrig-
erant R134a). This medium evaporates thanks to the temperature influence on the
hot side of the air flow, thereby absorbing energy from the air and in turn transferring
this to the cold side of the heat exchanger. To be able to maintain this circuit, when
the heat pipe is installed vertically, the hot air flow has to be taken underneath the
cold air flow.
– Ideal for installations where the mixing of the supply air and exhaust air flows should
be avoided.
– Moisture cannot be transferred, which is a particular advantage if moisture has to
be removed with the hot exhaust air, such as in swimming baths, drying installa-
tions, etc.
– Other important areas of application of GEA ECOSTAT include economisers in
industry, business, hotels, hospitals, sports halls, office buildings, machine
extraction systems, etc.
– With the GEA ECOSTAT system, the transfer performance is controlled by the
bypass on the fresh air side by means of a bypass valve.
– The air flows are not mixed, so there is no contamination of the fresh air by the
exhaust air flow (hygiene requirements, particularly in hospitals).
– Complete recovery of the condensation energy released by
moisture precipitation.
– High reliability in operation, because no drive energy is needed.
– The particularly compact design makes it ideal for installations where the project
demands short construction times.
– The heat pipe principle means that the pipe cannot freeze on the exhaust air side.

Liquid-coupled heat exchanger (ECOFLOW)

– In the case of the GEA ECOFLOW, the heat is transferred through a medium
(water/glycol mixture). This medium is kept in constant circulation between the
exhaust air and fresh air heat exchanger with the aid of a circulation pump. When it
flows through the exhaust air heat exchanger, the medium absorbs energy from the
air and releases it again when it flows through the fresh air heat exchanger.
– This system is suitable for similar applications to the GEA ECOSTAT, but in this
case, it is not necessary to combine all hot and cold air flows into a single air flow.
– The transfer performance can be adapted infinitely to requirements via a mixing
valve. A two-point operation is possible without a mixing valve by switching the cir-
culation pump on and off.
– The air flows are not mixed, so there is no contamination of the fresh air by the
exhaust air flow (hygiene requirements, particularly in hospitals).
– Complete recovery of the condensation energy released by moisture precipitation.
– Cold can be recovered by a summer circuit.
– The possibilities of varying fin spacing and heat exchanger material within a system
allows ideal adaptation to the installation conditions. Consequently, a correspond-
ing pipe system can be selected for each individual application, even if the waste
air is polluted or aggressive.

Brief Description of Components GEA CAIRplus
Heat Recovery

Plate-type heat exchanger (ECOPLAT)

– In the GEA ECOPLAT, hot exhaust air and cool fresh air pass by each other - sep-
arated by aluminium plates. Mixing of the two air flows, and therefore the transfer
of pollution, odours or bacteria, is not possible.
– Moisture cannot be transferred, which is a particular advantage if moisture has to
be removed with the hot exhaust air, such as in swimming baths, drying installa-
tions, etc.
– Other important applications of GEA ECOSTAT include economisers in industry,
business, hotels, hospitals, sports halls, office buildings, machine extraction sys-
tems, etc.
– Anti-freeze control is necessary with an exhaust air humidity> of 45 % r.h
(e.g. in swimming pools, laundries, hospitals, etc.).
– In kitchen extractors, particularly if the plate-type heat exchanger is installed hori-
zontally, significant grease deposits have to be expected on the plates, which have
to be cleaned regularly.
– With the GEA ECOPLAT system, the transfer performance is controlled by the
bypass on the fresh air side by means of a bypass valve.
– The integrated bypass on the fresh air side can be used to prevent freezing of the
ECOPLAT.
NOTE!
To maintain full heat exchanger performance and also avoid pressure
losses, both fans must either force the air through the heat exchanger or
provide air suction via the heat exchanger.

Rotation heat exchanger (ECOROT)

– Exhaust air flows through a slowly rotating accumulator in one direction and fresh
air passes through it in the other. A hot and cold air flow pass through the accumu-
lator alternately.
– There are three types:
– condensation rotor for heat recovery
– enthalpy rotor for heat and moisture recovery
– absorption rotor for heat recovery and increased moisture recovery.
– By installing GEA ECOROT regenerative heat exchangers, most of the sensible
and latent heat contained in the exhaust air can be recovered and used to heat up
the fresh air.
– For installation in GEA CAIR, the empty sections on both sides ensure optimum
service conditions.
– The fresh air and exhaust air units can be arranged either side by side or double
deck.
– Two ECOROT heat wheels can be integrated into the double mixing section in the
DUO version.
– Recovery of sensible and latent heat in the heating mode.
– Recovery of cold and de-humidification in the cooling mode.
– High re-heating and re-humidification levels.
– The temperature efficiencies are up to more than 80 %.
– Self-cleaning effect through counter-flow supply.
– The output is controlled simply by adjusting the speed.

GEA CAIRplus Brief Description of Components
Sound Attenuator

Sound Attenuator
– Splitters
The standard splitters consist of a profiled sheet steel frame with rounded edges (to
assist the flow) and a rock wool filling. This is protected by a laminated glass silk
fabric coating to prevent abrasion with air speeds up to 20 m/s, which is also
impregnated to prevent corrosion and repel moisture; it corresponds to construc-
tion material class A according to DIN 4102 (not combustible). Half of the splitters
are provided with outside section plates.
The splitters with outside section plates increase the damping effect in the critical
fan noise range in the 125 Hz and 250 Hz octaves compared with pure absorption
splitters.
– Material variants
Sheet steel frame in galvanized steel or stainless steel V2A, mat. no. 1.4301.
– Hygiene type

GEA CAIRplus Instructions for Planning
Transport

Transport
The units can be supplied fully assembled or as individual delivery units.
Deliveries are made on a transport pallet.

Lifting the unit: transport lugs on the roof (for delivery units up to 2000 kg)

• Only use the transport lugs provided by GEA!

• Transport lugs may only be used once.
• Transport lugs may not be used for permanently suspending
the units.
• Transport lugs may not be used laterally
(lateral pulling of unit)
• The suspension angle must not exceed 60°.
• No additional loads should be lifted together with the delivery
unit.
• When installing units outdoors, particular care should be tak-
en to ensure that the roof sheeting is not damaged by the
hoists.

Lifting the unit: transport device on the base frame (for delivery units up to 4000 kg)

• Only use the transport devices supplied by GEA!

• The units may only be lifted by the transport devices at-
tached to the base frame.
• Use the hoist (not supplied by GEA) as illustrated.
• Use the timber spacers supplied to protect the edges.
• The suspension angle must not exceed 60°.
• When lifting, pay attention to the centre of gravity in order to
avoid slipping or tilting.
• Transport devices may only be used once.
• Transport devices may not be used for permanently sus-
pending the units.
• No additional loads should be lifted together with the delivery
unit.
• When installing units outdoors, particular care should be tak-
en to ensure that the roof sheeting is not damaged by the
hoists.

Instructions for Planning GEA CAIRplus
Installation

Transport by pallet truck for forklift truck

• When transporting, always use the unit base frame or the pallet supplied as the
supporting surface.
• Units must not be lifted without the base frame unless the unit profiles are
sufficiently protected.
• When transporting by forklift, both base frame profiles of the unit must be resting on
the fork.
• Always remember the centre of gravity and load distribution.
• Never stack units one on top of the other for transportation.
• Always transport the units individually.
• Units and components not belonging to the units must never be stacked.
Exceptions are deliveries from the GEA works, when adequate load-bearing
capacity has been taken into account.

Storage conditions

Air temperature -10 °C to +50 °C

Atmospheric humidity Store the units in a dry atmosphere free from condensation.

Installation

Installation location

• The unit must be installed in a location that satisfies the fol-

lowing requirements:
– The sub-structure must be flat and stable.
– Deflection of the substructure must not exceed 1 mm per
metre maximum.
– In the case of units with condensate drain, the height of
the sub-structure must be at least the same as the
required siphon height (see siphon).
– Make sure that any escaping media cannot damage the
installation site or the environment.

GEA CAIRplus Instructions for Planning
Installation

Height adjustment in the case of spray humidifiers

• When a spray humidifier is installed, the remaining modules

must be balanced by installing a plinth or unit feet that corre-
spond to the height of the trough.

Minimum clearances

• A minimum space of a unit width must be provided on the op-

erating side in order to be able to remove fans, heat ex-
changers, droplet eliminators, etc. for maintenance and
inspection.
• A minimum clearance of 600 mm must be provided between
the back of the unit and the wall if the internal break point
connector cannot be used because of the unit configuration.

Foundation for indoor installation

• The sub-structure may project beyond the outer edge of the

unit by a maximum of 20 mm so that cover plates or acces-
sories, such as syphons, can be installed.
• The bearing points of the sub-structure must be
located at every break point and in addition,
a maximum distance of 1600 mm in the longitudinal
direction between bearing points must not be exceeded.
• Units that are arranged side by side must be supported
centrally (see illustration).

Instructions for Planning GEA CAIRplus
Installation

Foundation for outdoor installation (weatherproof, roof frame)

NOTE!
GEA units for outside installation are not a substitution for roof!
In compliance with prEN 13053 and VDI 3803 it is not allowed to use surfaces
of weatherproof units to support parts of a building or in a similar way substitute
a roof.

• Instructions for „Foundation for indoor installation“ on page 45 should be applied.

• Choose an installation location where the fresh air intake will not be facing the main
wind direction.
• In areas where there is a heavy amount of snowfall, the unit must be installed in a
location where its operation will not be affected by snow. A suitable height for the
subconstruction must be selected.
• If the unit is to be mounted on a roof, then the load-bearing capability of the roof and
its supporting structure must be checked. Consult a structural engineer if
necessary.
• The roof edge below the unit, as well as ducts and other roof openings must be
performed waterproof by others.
• The roof frame must be insulated to prevent condensation.

Foundation construction Foundation construction on steam

on concrete base beam by others

Foundation construction on steel supports by others

NOTE!
It is particularly important to make sure that the dimenions of the roof
openings are accurate and that the foundation is level.

GEA CAIRplus Notes
Information on Guidelines and Standards

Structure-borne noise insulation

In order to reduce the transmission of unit vibrations to the supporting struc-
ture, dampers must be used to provide vibration and structure-borne noise insu-
lation:
– We recommend that the foundation is isolated from the unit using rubber pads,

for example, where the unit is installed on level ground and no special structure-
borne sound isolation requirements exist.
– We recommend the use of commercially available spring elements for ceiling-
mounted units.
If there are special acoustic requirements, please consult an acoustics engineer to
select the right structure-borne sound attenuation method.
