Nyala font which is designed to support Ge'ez script, will be used in the spelling, You will hear twenty (20)
recordings and you need to type out what was said in each case and then press 'Next' to save your answer. You can
listen to each sample as many times as you like, and you can review and change your previous answers before you
submit the test.
Please read the following instructions carefully before sitting for the test.
• Spell the words you hear as they would be spelled in a dictionary.

• No abbreviations should be used. All words should be spelled out in full.
• Numbers should be written out as words:

• Do NOT use sentence punctuation. Full stops, commas and question marks are NOT to be used. Use of
hyphens are allowed if required for the normal spelling of a word. Acronyms (e.g. የተ.መ.ድ) can be written as
single words, without full stops (i.e. የተመድ)
There are a series of sounds in Amharic that can be represented by more than one fidəl. This is because these words
are derived from Gɨ'ɨz (ግዕዝ) or other Semitic languages. These fidəls used to represent different sounds, but in the
Amharic spoken today, they all represent the same sound.
If you find a word for which you know the correct fidəl, choose the correct one (e.g. nagus <ነጉሥ> rather than
<ነጉስ>, ṣəhay <ፀሐይ> rather than <ጸሐይ>). For other words, including words that are derived from English or other
recent 'loanwords' these fidəls sound like so the correct form or opt for

• Important: Your test should be typed using the normal alphabet only. If you need to copy/paste characters
into the text box, make sure that they are copied only from a plain text editor (e.g., Notepad) in order to
avoid formatting problems. (Formatting problems will result in an error message and will not save your
transcription.)
