Within the company there has been one individual that is thought to have more power

than what he is granted. My father started this company over twenty years ago and Doug

continues to think that he knows just as much, if not more, than my father. He has made

degrading remarks to the women that work there along with the women that come in from other

companies. The mindset that he has that “women serve men” is not something that is accepted in

this century, nor should it go unnoticed.

The structure of the organization is a well thought out one because everyone has their

place, and for the most part, everyone complies with the rules of their job title. Being an accounts

manager, I know my place within the company. Talking to customers about products and

consulting with my father, the CEO, before responding is how I flourish in my role. When it

comes to the secretary and foreman, they also know their role except for when my father is gone.

They then try to take control and argue about who knows more than the other person. My dad’s

“salesman” Doug, is the most argumentative of them all because of his mentality that he knows

more than anyone else. I put salesman in quotes because although that is his job title, he does not

follow that role. He does not have a benefit to the company, nor does he provide anything

positive to the business aspect of it all.

In the future course of action I would adjust management so that everyone knows their

place in the company. Until people know their place and what their job is I would not allow any
leniency. For this to take place a meeting would have to be held that notifies everyone of what

their job is and what their rights are within the company. This is all due to one person and many

times it is, occasions like these can be avoided if people would stick to what they are good at.

Doug, for example, is good at answering the phone and that is what he needs to stick to doing.

The foreman is good for notifying the people in the shop of what needs to be done and

everything always gets done.

In this frame I have learned that these things need to be taken seriously. This is because

customer service can get out of hand if someone steps out of line. When someone steps out of

line, customers can complain and that does not look good on the company even if it was not the

whole company that takes the fault. In these cases, employees need to think of what is best for

the whole rather than what would benefit them in that moment. If someone is bored then they

need to have another job or they need to find something to do that benefits the company.
