1: Getting Started

1.1 About Ag-Nav Automatic Target Flow

The Ag-Nav Automatic Target Flow is the next step of integrating today’s advanced
technology into the world of aerial application. The automatic target flow allows for worry
free automatic boom control. The automatic target flow system accurately turns on and off
the spray system at the exact boundary of the desired application area, eliminating spraying
outside or too far inside the area. When the Automatic Target Flow is tied together with Ag-
Nav’s Ag-Flow, it becomes the worlds most advanced fully automatic spray control system
on the market.

2. System Overview

2.1 How the system works

The Target Flow provides automatic boom on/off control by either opening or closing
a 3-way valve to allow product to flow to the boom system or to allow the product to
re-circulate back to the tank. When in Automatic mode, the Boom “ON/OFF” control
is triggered by a predetermined spray polygon set in either the Ag-Nav Guia or the
Ag-Nav2 guidance system. When the Aircraft is within the desired boundary of the
polygon, the target flow system will automatically turn the spray system on and off.

2.2 Function of the 2 position Auto/Manual Switch

The Automatic Target Flow system includes a 2 position toggle switch used to
perform the following functions:

Automatic: When in the automatic position the system is switched to fully automatic
mode using the Guia or AgNav2 guidance system to turn on or off the spray system.

Manual: When in the manual position the system is switched to manual mode
allowing the operator to manually turn on or off the spray system by using the 3-
position switch.

2.3 Function of the 3 position RUN/OFF/DUMP switch

The 3-way switch operation is directly related to the position of the 2-way
automatic/manual switch, thus having a total of 6 functions. The functions are
explained below in both automatic and manual mode. Please carefully label the
switches after mounting them to the aircraft panel.

7
2.4 Automatic mode operation

The Target Flow system includes a 3- way switch used to perform the following
functions:

Run: When in the “RUN” position the Target Flow will respond to Boom ON/OFF
commands sent by the Guia or Ag-Nav2 Guidance system. The system will open the
3-way valve to allow for product to flow to the boom system when the aircraft is
inside the predetermined spray polygon. The system will also close the valve to allow
for product to re-circulate back to the tank when the aircraft is outside the
predetermined spray polygon.

OFF: When the system is in the “OFF” (center) position the 3-way valve will not
respond to any commands sent from the Guia or Ag-Nav2 Guidance system and will
stay in its current position.

DUMP: When the system is in the “DUMP” position the 3-way valve will not
respond to any commands sent from the Guia or Ag-Nav2 Guidance system and will
change the position of the valve to a fully open state allowing product to flow to the
boom system.

2.5 Manual mode operation

Run: When in the “RUN” position the 3-way valve will be switched to the closed
position.

OFF: When the system is in the “OFF” (center) position the 3-way valve will not
respond.

DUMP: When the system is in the “DUMP” position the 3-way valve will be
switched to the open position.

3. Installing Automatic Target flow components

3.1 Installing the 3-way Valve

The Target Flow system should be connected as shown in the diagram below. (Figure 1.0.1)

The new 3-way valve should directly replace the existing manual 3-way valve.

Figure 1.0.1

3.2 Determining the position of the valve

To determine the position of the valve, locate the “Suck back” adjustment screw on the 3-
way valve. The outlet port (to boom) is located on the same end of the 3-way valve as the
suck back adjustment screw. You will also notice a metal mesh material inside the outlet
port. The inlet port (to pump) is located on the opposite end of the outlet port. The return port
(return to tank) is the smaller port with the flange-mount.

Once the position of the 3-way valve is determined the valve may be installed by using
standard hose clamps. New hose clamps should be used to avoid any possible leaks from the
3-way valve.

9
3.3 3-Way valve Suck back adjustment

The 3-way valve includes a “Suck Back” adjustment screw shown below in figure 1.0.2. The
purpose of the “Suck Back” function is to minimize or eliminate the post-dispense or
“dripping” of product from the boom system when the spray is turned off. Turning the screw
clockwise will decrease the “Suck Back” pressure. Turning the screw counter clockwise will
increase the “Suck Back” pressure. This adjustment is to be made during the initial setup of
the Target Flow system and the adjustment screw position may vary depending on the
viscosity of the product used and the aircraft boom pressure.

3.4 Installing the Control Box

When locating an optimal area to mount the controller box, the following recommendations
must be considered:

1. Install inside the aircraft.

2. Install in an area free of high moisture levels.
3. Install away from major heat sources such as an engine or exhaust manifold.
4. Use all 4 mounting screws.
5. Tie wires to airframe to avoid wires from rubbing on any sharp metal edges.
6. Install wires away from any moving mechanical parts.
7. Connect both power wires (2 pairs) to a dedicated 5A circuit breaker. Refer to
figure 1.0.3 for wiring diagram.

11
3.5 Fastening the control box

1. Using the control box for a mounting template, mark the 4 mounting holes on the
aircraft mounting surface.
2. Using a 3/16” drill bit, drill the 4 mounting holes
3. Fasten the control box with the provided 8-32 fasteners.

The figure below (figure 1.0.4) is an example control box installation on an AT-402.
