Lesson Plan in Science 8 Date:

Effect of Temperature to Speed of Sound

I. CONTENT STANDARD: The learners demonstrate understanding of the propagation of sound

through solid, liquid, and gas.

Learning Competency: Investigates the effect of temperature to the speed of sound. MELC
Week 4

Objectives: At the end of the session, the students should be able to:
1. Identify the effect of temperature on the speed of sound; and
2. Determine the speed of sound at a given temperature and vice versa.

II. SUBJECT MATTER: Effect of Temperature to Speed of Sound

SCIENCE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS:

 Elasticity – is the ability of the deformed material to return to its original form,
shape or size after removing the force that causes deformation.
 Density – it is the intrinsic property of an object. It is an objects mass per volume
which is obtained by dividing the mass of the object by its volume. It is a description
of how compact the atoms and molecules in an object.
 Temperature – it is a degree of hotness and coldness measured on a definite scale.
 Reflection – described as the turning back of the wave as it hits a barrier.
 Refraction – is change in the direction of sound waves as they pass from medium to
another.
MATERIALS:
 TV, HDMI, Laptop
 Power point presentation
 Activity sheets
 Video presentation
 Graduated cylinders
 Tuning fork
 Rubber mallet
 Thermometer
 Hot water
 Cold water
 Water room temperature

A. ELICIT: (5mins)
Play a song for the learners, let them sing along, dance or make any movements if
they want to. Let them enjoy the song.

B. ENGAGE: (10mins)
Ask them the question, “Have you ever wondered how you could sing or dance or
make movements whenever we hear a sound?” and “What is a sound? Let them
define sound on their own words.

C. EXPLORE: (15 mins)

Let the learners do an experiment. In this experiment they can discover in which the
sound travel faster, room temperature water, cold temperature water or hot
temperature water. Provide an activity sheet to the learners and let them complete
the activity. (please see attached activity sheet)

D. EXPLAIN (20min.)
The learners will share their answers to the class. Explain the different factors that
affecting the speed of sound. Provide examples and activities that will make the
learners understand the concept better.

E. ELABORATE(5min.)
Directions: The table below shows the speed of sound in air at various
temperatures. Plot the data on the graph and answer the questions that follows.

Guide questions:

1. Based on the graph, what is the relationship of temperature to the speed of

sound in air?
2. From your graph, find the interval where the speed of sound at 15˚C is located.
3. Extend the line of your graph and find the interval where the speed of sound at
25˚C is located.
4. Use your graph to determine how much does the speed of sound change for the
given change in temperature.

F. EVALUATE (10mins.)
Directions: Read the questions carefully and choose the letter of the best answer.
Write your answers on your separate sheet of paper.

1. Which of the following does the speed of sound depend?

a. density
b. elasticity

G. Extend
Directions: Carefully analyze the situations given. Write your answers on your
separate sheet of paper.

1. Why would you hear the siren sound of the firetruck clearly in a nearby
barangay during nighttime than daytime?
2. Why is it quieter in areas with high elevation such as Tagaytay and Baguio than
in lowlands?
