Lesson Plan in Science 8

Forces and Motion

I. CONTENT STANDARD: The learners demonstrate understanding of Newton’s Three Laws of

Motion work using constant force, power, gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, and
elastic potential energy.

II. Learning Competency: Investigate the relationship between the amount of force applied
and the mass of the object to the amount of change in the object’s motion. S8FE-Ia-15

Objectives: At the end of the four-hour session, the students should be able to:
1. Identify the Three Laws of Motion;
2. Identify and describe the different types of Forces;
3. Identify forces acting on an object at rest; and

4. Explain why objects stay at rest.

III. SUBJECT MATTER: Forces and Motion

SCIENCE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS:

 Forces – A force is anything that can push or pull on an object. Forces influence
objects that are at rest or that are already in motion.
 Motion – motion is the phenomenon in which an object changes its position with
respect to time. Motion is mathematically described in terms
of displacement, distance, velocity, acceleration, speed and frame of reference to an
observer and measuring the change in position of the body relative to that frame
with change in time.
 Isaac Newton – Sir Isaac Newton PRS was an English mathematician, physicist,
astronomer, alchemist, theologian, and author, widely recognized as one of the
greatest mathematicians and physicists of all time and among the most influential
scientists. He was a key figure in the philosophical revolution known as the
Enlightenment.
MATERIALS:
 TV, HDMI, Laptop
 Power point presentation
 Activity sheets
 Video presentation

IV. LEARNING TASKS

A. ELICIT: (5mins)
Present the following statement in class and ask the students if they agree or
disagree with them. Select two to three students to justify or explain their answer.

1. Force is needed to stop an object.

2. Force always results to motion.
3. Force can act even at a distance.
4. Objects have the tendency to remain at rest.
5. Objects have the tendency to resist change.
B. ENGAGE: (10mins)
Play a video about the three laws of motion and let the learners identify and state
the three laws of motion.
Let the learners perform three simple activities as visuals representations of motions
and let them answer the following guide questions.

Guide questions:
a. What can forces do? Forces can produce changes in motion.
b. What changes forces can do?

C. EXPLORE: (15 mins)

The class will perform the first activity entitled Effect of Force on a Ball. The learners
will examine the figure provided by group but will answer the activity individually. (please
see attached activity sheet)

D. EXPLAIN (20min.)
After the activity, the learners will share their observations in class. The teacher will
discuss the Three Laws of Motion and its related concepts. The teacher will also provide a
physical example for better understanding and ask comprehensive questions to the
students.
After the discussion, the students will perform the second activity, Forces on object
at rest, by group but will answer the activity individually. (please see attached activity sheet)

E. ELABORATE(5min.)
The whole class will check the second activity, Forces on Object at Rest, all together
and the teacher will briefly discuss some important concepts from the activity.

F. EVALUATE (10mins.)
Directions: Complete each statement by filling in the blanks with the correct word/s.
Write your answers on your separate sheet of paper.
1. Any push or pull is called_____________.
2. _________ refers to the size or strength of the force while _____________
points to where the object goes. The direction of the arrowhead indicates the
direction of the force. The length of the arrow represents the amount of force.
3. There are two types of forces, namely ____________ and ____________.
4. Applied, friction, normal and tensional forces are examples of ____________
forces.
5. Gravitational and magnetic forces are examples of _____________ forces.
6. ___________ are forces that are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.
7. ___________ are forces that cause a change in the motion of an object.
8. The sum of all forces acting in an object is called _____________.
9. If the forces in an object are balanced, the net force is ____________.
10. If the forces in an object are unbalanced, the net force is _____________.

G. Extend
The learners will prepare for a group presentation showing the three laws of motion.
Each group will create a scene or performance wherein they will present to the whole class
the three laws of motion.
