SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION

I. CONTENT STANDARD: The learners demonstrate understanding scientific ways of


acquiring knowledge and solving problems.

II. Learning Competency: Describe the components of a scientific investigation.


S7MT-Ia-1

Objectives: At the end of the three-hour session, the students should be able to:
1. Understand the scientific process through the scientific method;
2. Identify and describe the steps and components of scientific method.

II. SUBJECT MATTER: Scientific Investigation

SCIENCE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS:

 Scientific method – A plan for collecting, organizing and communicating data. The basic
steps that scientists follow in revealing facts and solving scientific problems (a plan for
solving a problem).
 Hypothesis – a predictive statement that can be tested with an experiment.
 Scientific Theory – is an explanation of an aspect of the natural world and universe that has
been repeatedly tested and corroborated in accordance with the scientific method, using
accepted protocols of observation, measurement and evaluation of results.

 Independent variable – The variable that is being manipulated or controlled.


 Dependent variable – it changes because of a test. It is the effect that arises from the
changes in the independent variable.

A. ELICIT: (5mins)
The teacher will ask the students’ “Suppose you saw an apple slice inside your fridge that
turned brown. What can you put on an apple slice to keep it from turning brown?”. The students are
allowed to make a prediction and share their responses. The class then listens to some of the
responses.

B. ENGAGE: (10mins)
The teacher will engage the students in a story reading. The students will identify the
different components involved in scientific investigation. The students will then answer the jumbled
word puzzle to reveal the items being described by the clue.

C. EXPLORE: (15 mins)


The class will go on a virtual field trip. The teacher will ask the students to look beyond their
memory on the products that they can found at home. The students will identify three objects, it
can be food or any products. The students will describe the characteristics of the product or object.

The teacher will provide a sample of the table for the students to copy and answer on their
answer sheet. Guide questions will also be posted and answer by the students.

2. What happens to these products if they are affected by outside factors?
3. What can you conclude about the products you have chosen?

The teacher will discuss the scientific investigation and will explain the components involved
in scientific method and on how to obtain a hypothesis. The teacher will also explain the different
steps in scientific investigation. The teacher will also discuss about the dependent and independent
variable in a scientific investigation.

E. ELABORATE(5min.)
The teacher will elaborate the lesson through a true or false activity. The students will read a
selection regarding the scientific method and will answer the said activity. Instructions for the
activity will be provided.

The class will be divided into groups with five members each. Each group will
conduct a scientific investigation with relevance to the farm school. Each group will
submit a simple research output at the end of the quarter. The teacher will follow
through the output of the students.
