Example 1: In the following cases find the derivative f 0 ( a) if it exists

(
1−cos 2x
x if x 6= 0,
a) f ( x ) = a=0
0 if x = 0,
p
b) f ( x ) = ( x − 1)2 , a = 1.

Example 2: Assume that a manufacturer’s average-cost equation is

5000
c̄ = 0.0001q2 − 0.02q + 5 + .
q

Find the marginal cost-function. What is the marginal cost when 50 units are produced?

Example 3: A monopolist who employs m workers finds that they produce
3
q = 2m(2m + 1) 2

unit of product per day. The total revenue r (in dollars) is given by

50q
r= p
1000 + 3q

a) What is the price per unit (to the nearest cent) when there are 12 workers?

b) Determine the marginal revenue when there are 12 workers.

Example 4: The demand equation for a certain product is

q
q = 3000 − p2

where p is in dollars. Find the point elasticity when p = 40, and use this value to compute the
percentage change in demand if the price of $40 is increase 7%.

Example 5: The demand equation for a product is

q = 500 − 40p + p2

where p is the price per unit (in dollars) and q is the quantity of units demanded (in thousands).
Find the point elasticity of demand when p = 15. If this price of 15 is increased by 0.5%, what
is the approximate change in demand?

Example 6: The demand equation for a product is

60
q= + ln 65 − p3
p

a) Determine the point elasticity of demand when p = 4, and classify the demand as elastic,
inelastic, or of unit elasticity at this price level.

b) If the price is lowered by 2% (from $4.00 to $3.92), use the answer to part (a) to estimate
the corresponding percentage change in quantity sold.

Example 7: Given the implicitly defined function

y3 + x2 y4 = 1 + 2x.

dy
Find the derivative .
dx

Example 8: Find equation of tangent line to the following curve at the point (4, 3)

y2 + xy − x2 = 5.

Example 9: The manager of a 100-unit apartment complex knows from experience that all units
will be occupied if the rent is $800 per month. A market survey suggests that, on average, one
additiona l unit will remain vacant for each $10 increase in rent. What rent should the manager
charge to maximize revenue?
