Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health

problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less
sugar.

I partly disagree

Increase in price of SP can or cannot encourage ppl to consume less S?

Themes:
- affordability/budget
- finance/economy
- public disagreement

Agree:
Main idea: high-price sugary products would be less popular to ppl with moderate income
Increase in price (less affordably) by imposing different types of tax => ppl with low budget consume less
sugar because they have to save money for other matters = ppl cut down on their sugar consumption
- Link: Clearly, this would be helpful but not thorough enough because only ppl with low income consume
less.

Disagree:
Main idea: this policy will absolutely met with public disagreement and affect country’s economy

Economy:
- Food and beverage industry is important in E
- increase in price of SP means ppl buy less => business affectedd => unemployment => poor economy

Public disagreement:
- some ppl don’t like sugar while others like sugar (have appetite/preference for) => the increase in price is
against their preference => the policy is unreasonable => disputes between citizens and government

Mass-produce: produce in a big quantity

These days, mass-produced products with an excessive amount of sugar have been affecting people’s
well-being. Therefore, it is suggested that an increase in the price of these products can discourage people
from consuming sugary food and drink. In my opinion, this seems a little unreasonable.

Discourage/prevent someone from doing sth

Beverage = drink
Refrain from sth = consume sth less
Thesis statement: essay
Topic sentence: paragraph

Raising the cost of sugary products may limit their consumption to some extent. In some fast food
restaurants, sugary food and drink are inexpensive if they are bought in combos. Some establishments
even allow their customers to refill their drinks without any extra cost. So, overpricing these beverages by
imposing/implementing different types of taxes would somehow encourage people to refrain from them.
This could even become more effective to consumers of moderate income (make my point
stronger). Clearly, though this method seems helpful, it is not thorough/ enough because perhaps only
people with low budget would take price into account.
Take sth into account = consider sth important

Nevertheless, this approach can cause many problems. Food and beverage industry makes a significant
contribution to any economy. Undoubtedly, sugary products play a vital role in this field. An increase in the
price means that their consumption will be reduced since/because many people cannot afford. As a result,
businesses concerned/involved will be affected, which leads to unemployment. Ultimately, a country
would probably become financially disadvantaged when a huge number of people lose their jobs. In
addition, this approach can be met with public disagreement if it is adopted without a national
referendum. Some people have preference for sugar-rich products while others do not. This means
imposing this policy could be a challenge since it can cause disputes/argument between authorities and
consumers who love sweented foods. Therefore, the increase in the price of sugary products may not
be/prove effective since it not only does harms to an economy but also provokes conflicts between
governments and citizens.

Have preference for sth = like sth

Do harms to sth = be harmful to sth

In conclusion, I can partly disagree with this suggestion/view. Although raising the price of products high in
sugar may curb/limit consumption of them to some extent, this solution can cause social conflicts and even
destroy an economy.
