Robots limber up to take over underwater welding

Conventional deep sea pipework is costly and dangerous, and in future it will probably be
performed in even deeper waters beyond the reach of divers. Therefore, a diverless robotic system for
joining pipes on the seabed has been developed.
The robotic system consists of the hydraulically-operated bolt fixing and tensioning equipment
(Atlantis) and the modular advanced tie-in system (MATIS), i.e. the space-frame surround for Atlantis.
Atlantis joins two pipes on the seabed using flanges pre-welded to the pipes before entering the sea,
whereby MATIS acts as a 3-axis manipulator for aligning the pipes and rotating the flanges into position.
The entire operation is controlled by a computer.
