OVERVIEW

Assessment is an integral component of the teaching-learning process. Its result will give a glimpse as
to whether we as teachers had succeed in our teaching efforts and how well our efforts exerted in the teaching
and learning were manifested by the students as evidenced by their attainment to the goals/ outcomes/
standard set for them to learn.

In this particular unit, discussion on the preliminary concepts and recent trends will be undertaken.
Among these are the nature and significance of educational assessment, the basic terms, the elements of a
high-quality assessment and the latest trends and focus on the parlance of assessment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the rigid analysis and comprehension on this module, learners are expected to:

a. explain the basic concepts and principles in educational assessment;


b. discuss on the role of assessment in making instructional decisions to improve teaching and learning;
and
c. discuss and reflect on the applications and implications of assessment to teaching and learning.

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT

1. Assessment FOR learning – these are assessments done prior to and during instruction.
2. Assessment OF learning – these are assessments done posterior to instruction.
3. Assessment AS learning – these are assessments done for teachers and learners to understand and help
them perform well their role of assessing FOR and OF learning.

 Assessment is an integral component of the teaching-learning process.


 Discussion on the basic concepts and principles of assessment include a.) The Teacher and
Assessment, b.) Assessment and Learning, c.) Modes of Assessment, and d.) Guidelines for Effective
Student Assessment.
 There are three (3) types of assessment. These are 1.) Assessment FOR learning, 2.) Assessment OF
learning, and 3.) Assessment AS learning.

 Measurement, Testing, Evaluation, and Types and distinctions of tests are some of the basic
terminologies in assessment.
 A high-quality assessment should have at least the following elements: a.) clarity of purpose, b.)
clarity and appropriateness of targets, c.) appropriateness of methods, d.) adequacy of sampling, and
e.) objectivity.
 Among the recent trends and focus on assessment, the following points/ topics pose great
significance: a.) accountability and fairness, b.) standards-based education, c.) outcome-based
education, and d.) item-response theory.
