Inquiry Directions

Choose two of the following technological devices. For each one, complete the required research
and write about how the devices use wave behavior to transmit or capture information.

 Microwave
 Radio
 Remote control
 WiFi
 X-ray
 Gamma radiation

Device 1 = WiFi

 Describe the device and its function.

Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that enables the Internet to be accessed by

devices such as computers, mobile devices, and other hardware.

 What form of electromagnetic radiation does it use?

Radiofrequency energy.

 Describe the frequency and wavelength range of this type of electromagnetic wave.

Wi-Fi operates at relatively specific wavelengths of either 12 cm or 6 cm.

 Using the information above and details from your research, write a paragraph of five
sentences or more explaining how the device uses the behavior and characteristics of the
electromagnetic wave to function. Remember the writing tips from the lesson, and use facts
and details to explain your topic sentence.

A Wi-Fi network uses radio waves, like mobile phones, to transfer data across a network. A
wireless adapter should be built inside a computer to convert the data provided into a radio
signal. The router, decoder, will receive this identical signal through an antenna transmission.
Because the wireless network is two-way, any data downloaded from the internet must also
transit via the router in order to be converted into a radio signal that the computer's wireless
adapter can recognize.

 You must include citations for all reliable sources used. Include citations from three or more
reliable sources.

Device 2 = X-ray
 Describe the device and its function.

Using high intensity electromagnetic waves, examination creates pictures of the body's
architecture, mostly of the bones.

 What form of electromagnetic radiation does it use?

Photons

 Describe the frequency and wavelength range of this type of electromagnetic wave.

X-rays use electromagnetic radiation. These electromagnetic energy pulses are pretty
potent. Most of them range from 0.01 to 10 nanometers in wavelength.

 Using the information above and details from your research, write a paragraph of five
sentences or more explaining how the device uses the behavior and characteristics of the
electromagnetic wave to function. Remember the writing tips from the lesson, and use facts
and details to explain your topic sentence.

X-rays are waves with very high frequencies and substantial energy. A beam of electrons is
directed towards a "target" by X-ray equipment. X-rays will be created if we fire the electrons
with strong enough energy.
