Learning Outcome
At the end of this chapter, you should be able to define:

• Industrial Revolution 4.0 and its impact to the society

• Big Data – the characteristics and applications

• Internet of Things (IoT) and the applications

• Cloud Computing - the components and examples of usage.

2
Industrial Revolution
• Industrial Revolution (IR) began in the 18th
century in Britain.

• Industrial Revolution transformed economies

that had been based on agriculture and
handicrafts into economies based on large-scale
industry, mechanized manufacturing, and the
factory system.

• Four stages of Industrial Revolution which IR 1.0,

2.0, 3.0 and 4.0

3
Industrial Revolution Stages

4
Industrial Revolution 4.0
• IR 4.0 is to introduce the wide usage of cloud technology, artificial
intelligence (AI) and internet of things (IoT) by using machine
learning and cyber physical systems (CPS).

• CPS is one of the latest technology use in IR 4.0 by presenting the

way of communication between humans and the engineering
system.

• There are 9 pillars - virtual/augmented reality, additive

manufacturing, IoT, big data, cloud computing, advanced simulation,
autonomous robot, universal integration and cyber security

a collection of tremendously huge, fast and
complex data sets that are difficult to
handle using traditional data processing
applications

Internet of Things (IoT)

An environment where electronic devices or

objects that are equipped with sensors,

connected with other devices and systems
through the Internet in order for them to
interact with each other in real time.
