LAB SETUP

Let's setup this lab

This is the cable for connecting two routers in same place, when emulating two networks in two
different.

This cable replace the ISP. On a real world production network, u can't use cable to connect Abuja to
Lagos.

Is mast or satellite called VSAT, that we are going to use to receive signals of distance network. We will
get there.

This cable is called v.35 cable or serial back to back cable.

It is not a VGA cable for Desktop ooo.

Is time for practical

Ok let’s go.

Click on your Cisco packet tracer software.

Allow it to load and u should see the image below.

Click ok and click guest login to allow it to count down from 14 to 0 and another window will come up
Click on the router and u will see bunch of routers . You can pick any router but let’s use 2620. Click on
it.

It will appear on the screen.

Click on the router and you get the interface below

Click on PHYSICAL and get the next interface below

Let me explain this,

Most routers when you bought them from market they don’t have serial port. So you need to go buy
serial card and insert it on the empty slot.

To do that in our packet tracer requires a bit stress especially for Android users.

Let’s try it out……

Check to locate the ON/OFF button at the top right corner. U will see is showing green, telling us is
switched ON, click on it, it will switch OFF. Yes is OFF when the green light disappear. Now try to add
your LAN and WAN ports to the router. Can u see the list of modules listed below in yellow colours? Can
you also see the 2 rectangular black empty holes up there. Ok let’s fill the holes by placing modules on
them.

For 2620 router

WIC-2AM

WIC-2T

Drag the above modules one after the other to fill each of the empty holes.

Combining the two modules above will give u the right modules and appropriate one that corresponds
to my home lab.
Drag all the modules to left hand side, to reveal the hidden modules.

U hv just added LAN and WAN port on your router.

Repeat the same process by taping on the screen to bring up another router, add ports to this router
also and now you have two routers on the screen.

Let’s now connect serial cable from first Router to Second Router.

After adding ports, u should click on the first router and click connect and you will be prompt to also
click another router (Abuja), pls do just that and you should get the image below.

From here you need to chose cable.

Click on chose cable, and the window below will pop up

Remember we are trying to connect two routers in different locations together. That means we are
creating WAN. Even though we hv both routers on same table. Lol. But my assumption is that they are in
two different locations.

Ok, we are going to use serial cable to connect both of them.

From the above image, I hv two serial cable.

Anyone can work fine. But pls go for the first one. Go for the serial DCE
Connect the serial port of the first router to the serial port of second router. Just by clicking the first
S0/0 and take it down to S0/0 of the second router.

That’s all.

Once done, return to ur topology and u should see the image below

To return to your topology , click the icon my arrow pointed at in d screenshot below

Now let's achieve this

Ok, all u need to get the above setup is to return back to ur previous topology where u hv only two
routers and click ur screen , then click on a switch, pick 2950-24 .

Continue to pick until u drop 2 switches on the topology area, arrange them as shown above. Also go on
and click on End Device, from there u see many computers. Pick 6 laptops and arrange 3 each under
each switch as presented above.

Now, go on and connect cables…

Click on the first Router and click on autoconnect. Pls don’t click connect.

After clicking on autoconnect, click switch, u should see a cable automatically connect the router and d
switch.

Go on, click on the switch and click autoconnect and go click the first switch. A cable will connect both as
well.

Keep doing that across the network, and u should get same topology like the one I presented above.

Yeah, we are moving.

All we need to do now, is to go and click on the first PC, then click on Desktop, click on Ipv4
Configuration and u enter IP address as shown on the white board scenario.

There is a space to enter Subnet mask, do that appropriately. Read about subnetmask in the
fundamentals of Networking Manual I gv u.

Another space there is the Default Gateway and DNS Address.

Pls ignore, DNS Address for now.

As for Default Gateway, default Gateway of the 3 Computers in Kogi State will be the LAN address of the
Kogi Router, i.e 192.168.1.1

As for the three computers in ABUJA, the Default Gateway is the LAN Address of the Abuja router,
192.168.2.1

Once u do that, go on and let’s run a ping command

Don’t forget to click on Apply changes at the bottom right hand corner, before clicking on close at the
top right hand corner.

Don’t u worry yourself pls.

Just follow my lead for now.

Later I will explain how all those things happened on real life and you will be 100% relief.

Now let’s ping

The purpose of a ping command is to Know if your systems are seeing each other. Remember only if
they are seeing each other would they be able to talk to each other.

Since u already assigned IP address to each computers on the network, go to the first computer and ping
the address of the second computer or third computer on the same network with u. I mean ping from
any computer within kogi network to others in same kogi network.

For me I want to ping from the second computer to the first. In Kogi network.
The first computer is on 192.168.1.2 the second is 192.168.3

If I stand in second computer for instance I can ping 192.168.1.2 or ping the 3rd computer on
192.168.1.4

See below:

From PC2,

Ping 192.168.1.2

A successful reply means they are seeing each other.

A request time out means they can’t see each other.

SEE THIS

After a successful pinging between kogi computers, try to stay in any kogi computer and ping any
computer in Abuja network. Alas!, It won’t ever give u a successful reply.

Yeah, that’s because there is something we need to do, which is Initial Configuration and Routing
between the two routers.

That’s where we will start next class from, God’s willing.

To do a ping test

Click on computer, click on Desktop, click on command prompt and type the ping command.

From any Kogi computer type

Ping 192.168.2.2

Hit the enter key and see the result.

So let’s keep trying it.

It will challenge some of us. But let’s not rush , let’s not gv up.

We hv enough time from today till tomorrow 8:30pm to get it right.

This is the only hardest part. Once u get it, the remaining work is simple. Is just typing typing.
