TOPIC: BORROWING/LENDING

1. Have you ever borrowed books from others?

Yes. I borrowed a book from a friend when I was in high school. I knew about that
book by reading a review on the internet but was not sure of myself whether I should
buy it or not because the book was quite expensive for a highschool student.

2. Have you ever borrowed money from others?

Not even once. When you borrow money from a friend, then miss a payment,
things get very awkward when they have to come collect. Also, I have a good
control of my own spending so I never buy something over my budget.

- have a good control of: kiểm soát tốt

- miss a payment: quên không trả (tiền)
- over my budget: vượt quá ngân sách

3. Do you like to lend things to others?

It depends. If it’s just a piece of clothing or a book, I’ll be happy to share it with my
friends. But, when it comes to money, I’d rather not because I am afraid that if there
is ever a delay in returning money, it might ruin my relationship with the borrower.

4. How do you feel when people don’ t return things they borrowed from
you?

I feel disrespected and even betrayed. I also don’t want to have any connection with
people like that. They are so poor-mannered and impolite.

- betrayed: bị phản bội

- poor-mannered: hành xử không tốt

TOPIC: NUMBERS

1. Do you have a favorite number or a number that is special to you?

This may sound bizarre to some people but I have a genuine liking towards the
number 7. Superstitions about numbers are common for Vietnamese people and 7
is considered an unlucky number as it represents failure and loss. Nevertheless, this
number appears to be quite auspicious for me and throughout my life, many lucky
things have been associated with it.

- bizarre (adj): kỳ lạ
- have a genuine liking towards: có sự yêu thích chân thật với
- superstition: (n) sự mê tín
- auspicious (adj): có triển vọng, hứa hẹn tốt
- be associated with: gắn liền với, liên quan tới

2. Do any numbers have special importance in your country?

Yes, undoubtedly. It goes without saying that certain ages are considered to have
special importance to a person’s life such as 18, 49, and 53. 18 is understandable as
we are officially adults at this stage but I am not sure about reasons or explanations
for other numbers. Maybe it concerns some superstitious ideas that people may
run into several troubles between 49 and 53 years old.

- undoubtedly (adv): không nghi ngờ gì

- It goes without saying that: Chắc chắn rằng
- run into (v): vướng phải

3. Are you good at remembering numbers? Why / why not?

I am proud to say that I have a knack for memorizing numbers. For me, numbers
relating to dates, birthdays, or mobile phones can be learned by heart easily and of
course, I have no difficulty remembering dates of historical events. I owe this
inborn capability to my father whose memory is so admirable and never fails to
take me back with his super detailed historical stories.

- have a knack for sth (v): có năng khiếu về sth

- learn sth by heart (v): học thuộc lòng sth
- owe sth to sb (v): nợ sb sth
- inborn capability (n): khả năng bẩm sinh
- take sb aback (v): khiến sb bất ngờ

4. What numbers do people often have to memorize?

I think one of the most essential numbers people have to remember is their phone
number and the one to contact in emergencies. They may help a lot in case you
encounter some urgent situations which may make you lose control and temper
and you cannot open the notes app on your phone.

- essential (adj): thiết yếu

- in emergencies: trong những trường hợp khẩn cấp
- encounter (v): vướng phải, gặp phải
- urgent (adj): cấp thiết, khẩn cấp
- lose control (v) mất kiểm soát
- lose one’s temper (v): mất bình tĩnh

TOPIC: PLAN

1. Do you make plans every day?

Yes, I do a to-do list every morning to start a day off. I think making a plan on a

daily basis is essential because it keeps me on track and helps me meet deadlines

and get things done efficiently.

- start a day off: bắt đầu ngày mới

- keeps sb on track: giữ cho sb đi đúng hướng (làm việc đúng kế hoạch)
- meet deadlines: hoàn thành đúng thời hạn

2. Are you good at managing your time?

Yes, managing my time is my strong trait. I prioritize my tasks and this allows me to

stay ahead of schedule, achieving more than I set out to do.

- strong trait: điểm mạnh

- prioritize (v): dành ưu tiên
- stay ahead of: đi trước

3. What is the latest plan you made?

Well, I have made a plan to immigrate to Australia in the next 2 years and settle

down there, starting a new life. In order to achieve that goal, I need to get at least

6.5 IELTS.

- immigrate to (v): nhập cư

- settle down (v): ổn định cuộc sống

4. What is the hardest part about making a plan?

In my opinion, the most challenging part of plan making is deciding what you really

want. You cannot follow anyone else’s fixed plan so you should find your passion

and a motivation to stick to the plan of your own.

My hometown is on the outskirt of Hanoi. It’s in Ba Vi province, located in the west
of the capital. The place is quite famous for beautiful mountains and springs.

2. Is there much to do in your hometown?

Actually there are not many choices for young people to do for entertainment
because it’s in a mountainous area. However, if you enjoy the peaceful atmosphere,
you can go fishing or hiking. There are also some museums if you prefer cultural

Yes, of course. It’s where my family is. Every time I go back to the land, I feel loved.
Also, it’s got a lot of delicacies with fresh ingredients and unique cooking techniques
that you can find in nowhere else.

4. What are the people like in your hometown?

People there are really friendly in general. You can easily talk with them about
random things in life and they don’t mind at all, unlike in the city. Life speed in my
hometown is quite slow compared to that of hasty cities like Hanoi. Maybe that’s
why people in my hometown can be easier to reach.

- hasty (adj): vội vã, hối hả

If it were 3 to 4 years ago the answer would be a big no. But now it has become one

of my hobbies and I’m actually thinking of learning more about it. I had no idea what

I’ve learned to produce stunning photos.

- see crystal-clear: dễ dàng thấy rõ
