TOPIC: BORROWING/LENDING
Yes. I borrowed a book from a friend when I was in high school. I knew about that
book by reading a review on the internet but was not sure of myself whether I should
buy it or not because the book was quite expensive for a highschool student.
Not even once. When you borrow money from a friend, then miss a payment,
things get very awkward when they have to come collect. Also, I have a good
control of my own spending so I never buy something over my budget.
It depends. If it’s just a piece of clothing or a book, I’ll be happy to share it with my
friends. But, when it comes to money, I’d rather not because I am afraid that if there
is ever a delay in returning money, it might ruin my relationship with the borrower.
4. How do you feel when people don’ t return things they borrowed from
you?
I feel disrespected and even betrayed. I also don’t want to have any connection with
people like that. They are so poor-mannered and impolite.
This may sound bizarre to some people but I have a genuine liking towards the
number 7. Superstitions about numbers are common for Vietnamese people and 7
is considered an unlucky number as it represents failure and loss. Nevertheless, this
number appears to be quite auspicious for me and throughout my life, many lucky
things have been associated with it.
- bizarre (adj): kỳ lạ
- have a genuine liking towards: có sự yêu thích chân thật với
- superstition: (n) sự mê tín
- auspicious (adj): có triển vọng, hứa hẹn tốt
- be associated with: gắn liền với, liên quan tới
Yes, undoubtedly. It goes without saying that certain ages are considered to have
special importance to a person’s life such as 18, 49, and 53. 18 is understandable as
we are officially adults at this stage but I am not sure about reasons or explanations
for other numbers. Maybe it concerns some superstitious ideas that people may
run into several troubles between 49 and 53 years old.
I am proud to say that I have a knack for memorizing numbers. For me, numbers
relating to dates, birthdays, or mobile phones can be learned by heart easily and of
course, I have no difficulty remembering dates of historical events. I owe this
inborn capability to my father whose memory is so admirable and never fails to
take me back with his super detailed historical stories.
I think one of the most essential numbers people have to remember is their phone
number and the one to contact in emergencies. They may help a lot in case you
encounter some urgent situations which may make you lose control and temper
and you cannot open the notes app on your phone.
Yes, I do a to-do list every morning to start a day off. I think making a plan on a
daily basis is essential because it keeps me on track and helps me meet deadlines
Yes, managing my time is my strong trait. I prioritize my tasks and this allows me to
Well, I have made a plan to immigrate to Australia in the next 2 years and settle
down there, starting a new life. In order to achieve that goal, I need to get at least
6.5 IELTS.
In my opinion, the most challenging part of plan making is deciding what you really
want. You cannot follow anyone else’s fixed plan so you should find your passion
If it were 3 to 4 years ago the answer would be a big no. But now it has become one
of my hobbies and I’m actually thinking of learning more about it. I had no idea what
I can do with my iPhone until I learned to make use of its wonderful camera as well
as some miracle apps. Unlike some people, I indeed want my photos to look unique,
those photos on the wall in my house for decoration and stress relief.
3. Do you prefer taking photos yourself or having others to take photos for
you?
It would be way more comfortable taking photos myself, as I can see crystal-clear
stuck between my teeth. And in case it’s a scenery photo, I can apply the techniques
I snap a photo whenever I see something that catches my eyes. For example, the
road I walk to school everyday, the sunset, the rainbow, the trees, photography is the
TOPIC: SMILE
Definitely! I always wear a smile everyday because I want to bring a positive energy
to my friends and family members. When you grin a lot, people around you will feel
happy.
I think people give others a smile at others when they bump into an acquaintance
on the street. Instead of saying “hi”, people smile to exchange greetings with each
other.
Yes, I do. I think that when looking at the photos of a smiling person, people are
more likely to think that the person in the photo is likable, confident, conscientious
and stable.
Yes and I’m good at recognizing it. Just simply looking at the person’s eyes, as it is
said that the eyes are the window to the soul, the eyes can surely express the

TOPIC: SHOPPING
Yes, there are quite a few local shops and chain stores like Vinmart nearby my
neighborhood. Since I live on the outskirts of the city, I have to go to the city
center for the high street.
- local shop: cửa hàng địa phương
- chain stores: chuỗi cửa hàng
- on the outskirts of: ở vùng ngoại ô của….
- high street: con phố lớn
Of course I do because shopping not only gives me a chance to compare the quality
of goods and acquire a better taste in things but also helps me release stress,
especially whenever I am overloaded with work.
- release stress: giải tỏa căng thẳng
It depends on what it is. For example, I go to the shop every day to buy fresh
vegetables or meat but I usually do window-shopping when it comes to clothes and
gadgets, etc….I’m on a tight budget so I have to be careful with money.
- window-shopping: ngắm đồ qua cửa sổ cửa hàng mà không có ý định mua
- on a tight budget: ít tiền

TOPIC: TEACHER
I think I would, but I want to become a lecturer instead. Although teaching has
always been my dream job since I was a kid, my specialization is not pedagogy,
which makes it difficult for me to teach at schools.
- specialization (n): chuyên môn
- pedagogy (n): sư phạm
I think no. Teachers should be role models for students to follow. If a teacher
cannot control her own temper, it might affect her students negatively.
- role models for: hình mẫu cho…
- control sb’s temper: kiểm soát cơn nóng giận
Luckily I haven’t met such an evil teacher. I think as long as you’re hard-working and
you do all the homework, learn the lessons well enough and don’t break any
school’s regulations, your name shall not appear on the teachers’ blacklist.
- school’s regulations: quy định của trường học
- blacklist: danh sách đen
For the most part, compared to old teachers, young teachers are more dynamic so
they often have a more modern teaching method that might arouse students’s
interests in the lessons. However, when it comes to classroom ability, it is older
teachers that can deal with all types of situations happening in classrooms.
- a more modern teaching method: phương pháp dạy hiện đại
- arouse (v): khơi dậy
- deal with: đối phó, xử lý với…

TOPIC: COUNTRYSIDE
To be honest, I am sick of the hustle and bustle of city life. Sometimes I just want to
get away from it all, going to a far-flung place and settling there.
- hustle and bustle: hối hả và nhộn nhịp
- far-flung (adj): xa xôi
Well, I think rural folk can engage in more activities than city-dwelling people.
Country-dwellers are keen on going out at night without fear of street criminals,
doing exercise in the early morning to enjoy the fresh air.
- rural folk = country-dwellers : người dân ở nông thôn
- city-dwelling people: người dân thành thị
Living in the countryside can definitely benefit people in a wide range of ways. For
one thing, living in the countryside is better for one’s health thanks to significantly
lower levels of air pollution. Besides, the cost of living in rural areas is likely to be
lower than that in cities.
4. What’s the difference between living in the city and living in the
countryside?
It is obvious that while we can fully enjoy a tranquil atmosphere in the countryside,
living in big cities gives us a better standard of living. In addition, the pace of life in
the countryside is slow whereas people living in big cities always seem to be in a
hurry.
- tranquil (adj): bình yên, tĩnh lặng
- the pace of life: nhịp sống

Well I have to admit that I’m a Facebook addict. I can spend all day using
Facebook. It helps me keep up to date with the latest news and keep in touch
with my friends.
- a Facebook addict: người nghiện Facebook
- keep up to date with: cập nhật với…
- keep in touch with: giữ liên lạc với…
I would call myself an extrovert so I have a big social circle of friends…I always
feel at ease when hanging out with my besties, going shopping with them.
- an extrovert (n): người hướng ngoại
- have a big social circle of friends: có nhiều bạn bè
- feel at ease: cảm thấy thoải mái
I tend to make acquaintances with those who share the same interests with me. It’s
easier to develop a tight-knit friendship when we have things in common, you know.
- make acquaintances with: làm quen, kết bạn
- tight-knit: khăng khít
Vietnamese people are keen on Zalo and Facebook. While Zalo is an instant
messaging apps, Facebook is a main source of news for people of all ages. Both of
these apps allow people to make payments and do online shopping as well.

I do not count the exact amount. But I tend to drink a lot of water because staying
hydrated is a priority for me since I easily get a headache if I don’t, not to mention
my weight loss goals. Drinking enough water is critical for our health.
- staying hydrated: duy trì đủ nước
- critical for: quan trọng cho….
Any water that is decently clean. Filtered water would do me good. When I have
stomach issues, I get myself some mineral or medical water recommended by my
physician.
- mineral water: nước khoáng
- medical water: nước y tế
Well, if I have to choose, water from water machines is way better. If this isn’t
available to me, I buy a bottle of water, although I prefer not to because of my
environmental concerns.

TOPIC: PAINTING/DRAWING
Yes, I did. I was at primary school, I had art lessons once a week and drawing a
picture was my homework which I had to do even though I couldn’t stand it. So that
I don’t particularly like any type of painting. However, I tend to hang landscape
paintings at home. Looking at these pieces of art really gives me a calming feeling
Yes, definitely. Learning arts, especially at a young age, can help stimulate children’s
brain and encourage them to think outside the box. Because they’re still little, their
