after playing football, I was very tired, so when I got home I fell asleep and
forgot about Brian’s appointment. He phoned me the next day. I was going to
phone you yesterday but I forgot.

A) We are working at the medical clinic. It’s midday now and the doctor is out.
A patient who is very worried to get the results of an operation has been
calling during the day. When the doctor was back at 5 pm, I told him that the
patient has phoned 3 times and she will likely phone again before closing.

B) Today, while working in the hospital, Mary phoned to book an appointment.


She has been calling before we closed down for the day. She wanted to make
sure that she was booked in. She phoned 3 times today
2. Meaning
A) This sentence is present perfect. We use present perfect to say that a
finished situation in the past is connected to the present. At the moment of
speaking she has phoned 3 times and as the day is not finished yet, she
might call again.
