Hepar Sulfuris Calcareum.

Calcium sulphide, prepared as directed by Hahnemann, is triturated for use.
General Action:- A "tissue" drug of wide action. It simulates Mercury in its action on the
glandular system, especially on the liver and kidneys, Sulphur in its action on the skin and
mucous membrane of the intestinal tract, Calcarea in affecting the respiratory tract, and all
of the foregoing in its general action on connective tissue. Extreme sensitiveness to a
draught of air, easy perspiration, profuse secretions and suppurative tendencies are
marked characteristics of the drug.
Allies:- Mercury, Calcarea, Sulphur, Silicea, Nit. acid, Kali in general, Phos., Puls., Bry., Tell.,
etc.
Generalities:- Emaciation, with chill in back, red cheeks, sleeplessness, larynx affected,
hoarse, weak voice, anxiety, apprehension and irritability, as in hectic fever. Inflammation

the daytime and after eating, with the peculiar sour odor to the sweat and stools. Cases re -
quiring Hep. are, as a rule, extremely sensitive to external impressions, especially to the
slightest cold; for example, it has removed the effects of malarial poisoning which have
been maltreated with calomel and quinine from the simple indications of profuse and easy
sweat, which is offensive, and of such extreme sensitiveness to air that the patient wears
an overcoat in hot weather. Hep. is generally indicated by extreme sensitiveness of in-
flamed parts, as if they were about to suppurate. The pains of Hep. are almost universally

2.2 VERMEULEN´S PRISMA

It is with our passions as it is with fire and water -
they are good servants, but bad masters.
[Roger L'Estrange]
Signs
Hepar sulphuris calcareum. [Impure] Calcium Sulphide.
CHEMISTRY White powder if pure. Odour of sulphuretted hydrogen in moist air;
unpleasant alkaline taste. Oxidizes in dry air and decomposes in moist air. Slightly soluble
in cold, more soluble in hot water with partial decomposition; freely soluble in solutions of
ammonium salts; practically insoluble in alcohol; decomposes even in weak acids,
evolving sulphuretted hydrogen. Has to be stored in closed containers, because of its
sensitiveness to air, heat, and moisture. 1 Impure calcium sulphide is a greyish to reddish
powder with an odour of sulphuretted hydrogen; it decomposes in moist air.
PREPARATION Equal weights of finely-powdered clean middle layers of oyster-shells
and pure flowers of sulphur are mixed, and placed in a hermetically-closed clay crucible,
where the mixture is kept at a white heat for at least ten minutes. When cold, the crucible
is opened and the hepar preserved in amber glass-stoppered bottles.
USES In phosphors; as lubricant additive. Pure calcium sulphide is used in electron
emitters. As 'lime-sulphurspray' used as a fungicide and insecticide. Luminous calcium
sulphide is used for making luminous paints or varnishes.
LUMINESCENCE The luminescence of natural calcium sulphide minerals [oldhamite] is
due to manganese and cesium ions. To obtain luminous calcium sulphide a mixture of
calcium carbonate and sulphur is ignited with very small quantities of manganese,
bismuth, cerium, phosphorus. The ions of the latter substances act as activators in
luminescence. The resulting compound, e.g. in luminous paints, will glow in the dark. It
stores light when exposed to it and emits it as a greenish or bluish glow for a relatively
short length of time when the light source is removed.
MEDICINAL ACTION "Essentially it has the action of sulphur in its active hydrogen
sulphide [H2S] form, but still is modified in certain directions through the participation of
the calcium ions. The acute and volatile H2S action in non-toxic doses is prolonged
through a preparation of this type by the cells of the skin and mucous membranes being
brought into longer contact with it. The calcium links the action toward the lymph
glands. ... Hepar proves itself more active than sulphur in all types of suppuration or
inflammations which pass over into suppuration. The untoward actions of sulphur
alkalies or sulphur earthy alkali compounds in the skin, which may evidence themselves
from irritation of the skin to purulent pustules up to phlegmons and abscess formation,
prove the homoeopathic suitability of the chief trend of action. It is uncertain whether
increase of the power of reaction of the tissue through sulphur is made easier through
hepar because it easily form SH ions from this mixture and therefore can be utilized and
become more active - indeed H2S is liberated through weak acids as well as carbon
dioxide [the 3rd decimal potency still has a very distinct taste and odour of hydrogen
sulphide]. It must also be left undecided how far the inflammation-depressing and
phagocytosis-stimulating calcium ion action has a share in the favourable influence."2
MEDICINE External application for depilation or in skin diseases such as psoriasis and
acne.
 PROVINGS •• [1] Hahnemann - 3 provers; method: unknown. [1] Merck Index. [2]

Main symptoms
* Hepar sulphuris is made of Calcium and Sulphur.
Calcium = vulnerability to external influences; Sulphur = inner fire.
M VULNERABILITY on ALL LEVELS [hypersensitive].
Anything that can penetrate <.
As if there are no barriers; leads to a great sense of INSECURITY, with constant need for
protection, which they try to find in "security, money, position, comfort".
• "May even marry for money." [Morrison]
M OVERSENSITIVE to EXTERNAL IMPRESSIONS.
In particular PAIN, TOUCH, COLD.
[Calcium sulphide is sensitive to air, heat, and moisture.]
M SOUR-TEMPERED persons.
[Calcium sulphide decomposes even in weak acids.]
Craving for sour things, vinegar, pickles.
• "He has appetite only for sour and strong tasting [piquant] things." [Hahnemann]
M INTENSITY; as easy as external influences go in, the inner fire FLARES up.
VIOLENT at TRIFLES, from PAIN.
Sudden impulse to KILL for a slight offence.
• "The slightest thing put him into a violent passion, he could have murdered anyone
without hesitation." [Hahnemann]
THREATENING, ANGER so that he could have stabbed anyone.
RUDE; makes furious gestures.
Rudeness mostly only VERBAL.
[Or, as Borland says, real physical violence: • "Children who lose temper and hit and kick
and do real damage."]
ABUSIVE from slightest stress.
• "Very marked sensitiveness to personal atmosphere - a person is like a red rag to a bull
with them. Exhibition of temper when with certain people - quite ungoverned in fit of
temper - kick, swear, upset by slightest thing. Quarrelsome, impulsive. Too bad tempered
to be afraid much. ... Mother looking after child will turn round and hit it with anything
handy."1
M HURRY - eating, drinking, talking.
Tends to do everything quickly.
M FIRE.
Delusion WORLD IS ON FIRE.
Wants to SET things on fire. Pyromaniac.
[May set things on fire out of anger.]
• "In Hepar you have frightful dreams of fire and also imaginations, frightful vision and
dreams of fire. Also they want set the house on fire, when they are in an acute state of
insanity or in a period of anger, they will say: 'I'm going to burn this house!' and Hepar
will threaten their spouse and children: 'I will kill you, but by fire, I will put the house on
fire!' You have these symptoms in Hepar: 'Fear, as if could murder one with pleasure.'
They also have the insight of doing it with fire and you can join the enjoyment to kill and
the desire to kill by fire as a typical symptom of pyromaniacs. But here it would be an
insanity or during a period of anger. While the chronic pyromania is not there because the
person is angry, it is just a compulsion." [Saine]
M Discontentment.
• "Very discontented and peevish over his pains, and discouraged."
• "Contrary mood; he does not like to look at his folks."
• "Whatever she started to do, was not satisfactory, she wished to be alone."
• "Whatever she thought about was unsatisfactory and did not suit her." [Hahnemann]
• "Tends to be thin and fair rather than dark. Look as if they haven't been well for some
time. None of the anxiety of Ars. patient. Very often give the impression they have come
against their will. Resentful when you start asking questions. Sink into chair as if
physically tired - none of the alertness of Ars. None of the physical restlessness of Ars.
Comes with definite depression but the impression given is that the patient is up against
things, that they are dissatisfied with conditions, rather fed up than fearful. Complains of
being out of health due to conditions under which he works - if he could only change his
job. He goes over past continually, but if he changes surroundings > for a bit, then goes
back again."2
• "She thinks about everything disagreeable that happened to her in her lifetime."
[Hahnemann]
G Great CHILLINESS.
• "In the open air she is quite depressed by a painful sensation, like a shiver; on account
of chilliness she must walk all bent together." [Hahnemann]

< Part of body becoming cold.
< Touching cold things.

< TOUCH.
G < CLEAR weather.
< Dry weather.
> WET weather.
G STITCHING, stabbing PAINS; splinter-like.

3.2 SANKARAN – THE SUBSTANCE OF HOMEOPATHY

Hepar sulphur
Hepar sulphuris calcareum is described as the sulphurette of lime, CaS. It was introduced
by Hahnemann who used the white interior of the oyster's shell and heated it along with
pure flowers of Sulphur. Thus was created an unnatural substance, from which the
potencies were prepared. Hepar sulphuris calcareum is very different from Calcarea
sulphurica, probably due to the mode of preparation. It becomes a syphilitic remedy. Yet,
when we study it and try to understand its internal feeling, we get the idea that it is
nothing but and extreme form of the Calcarea sulphurica feeling.
The Calcarea portion of Hepar sulphuris calcareum is represented by its fears, but the
fears are much exaggerated and more intense than in Calcarea carbonica. For example,
"Frightful visions of fire and dead persons; violent fright on slumbering". Thus, we find
the Calcarea "fright" much intensified in Hepar sulphuris calcareum - here it is a "violent
fright". The irritability of Sulphur is present, but again in a violent form: "Violent,
passionate, fretfulness. Wrathful irritability even to the most extreme violence, threatening
to end in murder and arson". Even the end stage (4th stage) in Hepar sulphuris calcareum
is much worse than Calcarea sulphurica. While Calcarea sulphurica has the symptoms
"Sits and meditates", Hepar sulphuris calcareum has the symptoms "Dementia with
complete stupidity, sits silent and speechless in a corner", "Sad mood for hours; must cry
vehemently".
Thus Hepar sulphuris calcareum seems to represent the violent extreme of Calcarea
sulphurica, which is easy to understand since it is the combination of Calcium and
Sulphur prepared in a violent manner. What is the feeling of Hepar sulphuris calcareum?
Phatak gives: "Ferocious; wants to kill those who offend him; wants to set things on fire".
We can see that Hepar sulphuris calcareum has the feeling of being terribly offended,
insulted. It is similar to the feeling that precedes a violent revolution, the feeling of being
terribly insulted / offended by the person who is supposed to look after you (e.g. the
king). In such a revolution, things are set on fire and people are slaughtered: arson and
murder. This is an extreme form of Hepar sulphuris calcareum. The third stage is also
marked by great touchiness and irritability, hasty especially in speech - words roll out
tumbling over each other - quarrelsome, hard to get along with - nothing pleases him,
cross and violent.
Here, I remember the case of a young man. He found that the shirt he had given to
laundry came back with a stain. This enraged him so much that he set the shirt on fire. The
same man, on another occasion, poured kerosene all over his house and tried to set fire to
it out of anger. I gave him Hepar sulphuris calcareum and his nature gradually underwent
a remarkable change. I do not remember what complaint he presented with.
3.2 SANKARAN – THE SOUL OF REMEDIES
Hepar sulphuris calcareum (the sulphurette of lime, CaS) is a syphilitic remedy. It was first
prepared by Hahnemann who used the white interior of the oyster shell; he heated it to
high temperature along with pure flowers of Sulphur. Hepar sulphuris is different from
Calcarea sulphurica probably due to its mode of preparation; it has elements of both
Calcarea and Sulphur, but has an added element of violence and cruelty.
Like Calcarea, the Hepar sulphuris person has a tremendous fear of being alone and is
very concerned about the health of relatives. But he feels that people upon whom he
depends for support push him down, treat him badly, humiliate him. He becomes very
violent, so much so that he wants to set things on fire, wants to kill. He is very hurried,
especially in speech, quarrelsome and very dissatisfied - nothing pleases him. There is in
him a great touchiness.
Thus Hepar sulphuris represents the violent extreme of Calcarea sulphurica. Phatak gives:

- Ferocious, wants to kill those who offend him, wants to set things on fire.
Hepar sulphuris has a feeling of being terribly offended. It is the feeling that precedes a
violent revolution, the feeling of being terribly insulted/offended by the person who is
supposed to look after you (e.g. the king). In such a revolution, things are set on fire and
people are slaughtered: arson and murder.
I have seen that in anger, they can get violent, suicidal, homicidal with firearms or a sharp
weapon. Even trifles make them extremely violent. For example I had a patient who found
a stain on a shirt that had just come back from the laundry, in a rage he set the shirt on fire.
On another occasion, out of anger, he poured kerosene all over his house to set it on fire.
He improved remarkably with Hepar sulphuris.
Like Sulphur, Hepar sulphuris is also concerned very much with appearance. He feels
unappreciated like Calcarea sulphurica. But the feelings are much more intense, as seen by
comparing the symptom "Sits and meditates" of Calcarea sulphurica to that of Hepar
sulphuris "Dementia with complete stupidity, sits silent and speechless in a corner", "Sad
mood for hours, must cry vehemently". Whereas Calcarea is fearful, Hepar sulphuris has
"violent fright" as is seen in the symptoms:
- Frightful visions of fire and dead persons.
- Violent fright on slumbering.
The irritability of Sulphur is present but again in a violent form:
- Violent, passionate, fretfulness.
- Wrathful irritability even to the most extreme violence, threatening to end in murder
and arson.
Physical concomitants
- Desires: fats, sour, spices.
- Tendency to suppuration, boils, extremely tender.
- Eruptions ameliorated by heat.
- Very offensive odour of discharges.
- Very, very sensitive; oversensitive to noise, pain and draught of air.

INTRODUÇÃO
It is with our passions as it is with fire and water - they are good servants, but bad
masters.
[Roger L´estrange].
[Sankaran - the soul

SINOPSE

INDICACOES AGUDAS
CAUSALIDADE
Ar frio e seco. Traumatismos. Erupções suprimidas
SINTOMAS CARACTERÍSTICOS
 Processos supurativos em qualquer parte do organismo. Abscessos. As feridas
supuram ou tardam em curar. Estabelece a supuração em torno de corpos estranhos e
os expulsa do organismo. Aconselha-se não dar Hepar sulphur ou outros remédios de

Hepar sulphur
The pyromaniac
This is the main remedy for acute suppuration (discharge of pus), whether it is a case of
otitis (inflammation of the ear), an abscess, conjunctivitis, or tonsillitis. The child cannot
stand the pain-which puts her in a violent disposition-and cannot tolerate the cold (cotton
in the ears). It is impossible to examine her. This is also the main remedy for acute
laryngitis which comes on during cold, dry weather, when Aconitum has not brought
about a sufficient cure. In 15 CH, it will quickly calm the most intense respiratory
difficulties.
At the level of the mind, there is an important mental symptom: "Wants to set things on
fire." This is the only remedy in Kent's repertory to possess such a symptom. In France, the
Midi region is affected as often by cold, dry winds as it is by fires-which makes sense
when we realize that Hepar pyromaniacs are affected adversely by this type of weather. A
few doses of Hepar sulphur (15 to 30 CH) can bring about the rapid disappearance of this
troublesome habit.

Observations

Isabelle, seven years old, lives only a few minutes away from me, fortunately. At three in
the morning, however, those minutes seem like centuries to her parents, who call me in a
panic. Two weeks after a follow-up BCG (tuberculosis) vaccine, she developed a
suppurative inflammation of the nose and throat. Tonight, suddenly, the crisis has hit. She
is having an attack of suffocating laryngitis. Outside, a dry north wind is howling.
When I arrive, she is seated and barely breathing, a hoarse sound emanating from her
throat. Her feet are purple; her lower extremities are cold to the knees. Ideas swirl in my
mind. The time it will take to call the emergency squad . . . it will be too late. It is
impossible to take her anywhere; we'll have to do a tracheotomy, but I don't have the
necessary equipment, and the idea of opening up her throat with a kitchen knife does not
please me at all! I slip three globules of Hepar sulphur into her mouth and prepare a
cortisone injection. Almost instantaneously, the girl seems to begin breathing more easily.
Without moving her, gently, we continue slipping globules of Hepar sulphur into her
mouth for several minutes. After about a quarter of an hour, her breathing becomes
normal; she calms down, then falls asleep. We have prevented the worst.
Roger, 12 years old, set his parents' garage on fire last week. He plays constantly with
matches, firecrackers, and anything that burns . . . it had to happen! He is brought to see
me for recurrent bronchitis, which yields quickly to Hepar sulphur.

Hepar 48

Hepar sulphur
According to Hahnemann’s directions Hepar should be prepared from a "mixture of equal
parts of finely powdered oyster shells and quite pure flowers of Sulphur kept for ten
minutes at a white heat". It’s artificially formulated substance produced by forcing
together an “animal” (oyster) and a “mineral” (Sulphur). Calcium = vulnerability to
external influences; Sulphur = inner fire. One of the symptoms of Hepar is excruciating
pain out of all proportion to the condition; Hep. is an unnatural substance  pain is
unnatural too.
ESSENCE: VULNERABILITY on ALL LEVELS (hypersensitive); as if there are no barriers;
leads to a great sense of INSECURITY, with constant need for protection, which they try to
find in "security, money, position, comfort"; may even marry for money rather than
waiting for someone they love. Physically the Hepar constitution is also vulnerable.
Infection comes easily into the patient both systemically - in all forms of fever or even
sepsis, and locally - with abscess formation and suppuration. Furthermore the patient is
vulnerable to any external force - weather, noise, light, chemicals and especially cold.
These external events seem to penetrate the patient more easily than any other remedy
type.
MENTAL SYMPTOMS:
- OVER-SENSITIVITY to all external impressions, esp. PAIN (slightest pain causes
fainting), touch, and cold.
- INTENSE REACTION to stimuli: VIOLENT at TRIFLES, from PAIN … sudden impulse
to KILL for a slight offence … THREATENING, ANGER so that he could have stabbed
anyone … IMPOLITE, makes furious gestures …rudeness mostly only VERBAL
- VIOLENT, explosive IMPULSES (to stab, to kill, to set on fire; violence is not calculated,
but is an immediate reaction to a stimulus)
- HURRIED: eating, drinking, hasty speech
- IRRITABLE … angry … critical … impatient
- Fire “issues”: fears, dreams, impulses toward pyromania, delusion WORLD IS ON FIRE
- DEPENDANT, insecure : needs protection, a safe “cocoon” around, may get violent if
that “cocoon” is threatened … agoraphobia ( = no protection)
Fears: of being alone … for health of the loved ones, esp. the one they depend on (“if he
goes, what’s going to happen to me?”) … hearing of violent accidents or movies (Calc-c)
GENERAL SYMPTOMS:
- VERY CHILLY (hug the fire; one of the coldest remedies)
- Complaints are intolerably, desperately PAINFUL (“I’ll kill myself if you don’t do smth.”)
- Tendency to SUPPURATION
PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS:
Essential qualities: OVER - SENSITIVENESS & SUPPURATION
Head: severely PAINFUL OTITIS MEDIA, child wakes at night shrieking and cannot be
comforted (Cham, Bell, Lach) … ears exquisitely sensitive to wind or open air ... iritis,

heat or warmth in any form … mastitis; breast abscess
Extremities: PARONYCHIA ... cold extremities; Raynaud's syndrome.

PAINS: CUTTING … penetrating … sharp … piercing … shooting … SPLINTER-LIKE
DISCHARGES: PROFUSE … PURULENT … acrid … bloody … offensive … sour or
smelling like old cheese
NOTES: Hepar is the 1st remedy to be thought of for early treatment of boils, abscesses,
impetigo, or ailments consisting mainly of pus formation and lacking clear symptoms of
other remedies (Moskowitz).
PRIME INDICATIONS:
1. Oversensitive to pain, touch, cold, slight causes.
2. Violent and intense; threatening, impolite. Sudden impulse to kill.
3. Very chilly.
4. Sour secretions. Tendency to suppuration.
5. Craving for acids and pungent things.
6. Stitching pains, splinter like.
DIFFERENTIALS:
Hepar 50

Colds: Hepar is slow in action, so the early stage usually requires fast acting remedies such
as Aco., Ars., Bell., and Merc. Hepar follows when the discharge becomes thick and
yellow, the nose red, swollen and tender, the nasal passages sensitive to inhaled air, and
the nostrils sore and ulcerated.
Merc: Mental state is very close to Hepar’s. On physical level both remedies cause
offensive perspiration without relief; destructive ulceration; unhealthy skin, etc. Although
sensitive to cold or lacking in vital heat, Merc. cannot tolerate direct heat or the warmth of
a bed. Hepar is more sensitive to cold, and is relieved by heat in any form. Hepar’s
eruptions are usually moist; those of Merc. most often dry.
Complementary Triad: Bell  Merc  Hepar. If the swelling has come on rapidly, the eyes
are bright and shining, the face intensely red, the pulse rapid and there is every evidence
of intense nervous excitement, and esp. if every jar increases the pain, Bell. will be all-
sufficient. If, however, sweat becomes more profuse but fails to reduce the temperature or
relieve the pains and the patient is worse when covered, yet chilly if covers are removed,
Merc. will take up the work where Bell. left off. A change of modalities to complete relief
from heat, increased sensitiveness to pain will indicate Hepar. This is esp. true if, in spite
of the action of Merc., an abscess has formed and refuses to open or subside, or having
opened continues to discharge copious thick yellow pus.

CASE

I recall an interesting case where I prescribed Hepar sulphuris calcareum to a married

woman, 28 years of age. She writes: "I have got skin troubles from and after my
pregnancy". Overexertion, cold and mental upset lead to bed wetting, difficulty in
breathing and cause fights and back answering. She has a fear of animals, disease, blood
and injections. She is very possessive and cannot bear that her near ones spend time with
or get close to others. She is very sensitive to insults and quite malicious. When she gets
angry she can strike people around her and shriek. As a child she was happy-go-lucky,
liked dancing and whenever her mother helped others or gave time to others she would
feel very neglected. She does not like it at all if her sister is more appreciated than her.
After marriage she came to a less rich family and she felt that she was working like a
servant. She feels neglected by her husband. She said: "I feel my husband gives more
importance to the peon than to me". She cannot tolerate contradiction, complains a lot
about her husband's indifference. Extremely discontented and very quarrelsome. She came
down with very painful boils and an abscess around her left knee which was very tender
and hot. In general she is very chilly, cannot bear draft of air, likes food hot, likes sweets
and fruits. The orthopaedic surgeon who saw her advised immediate incision and
drainage along with antibiotics, as the condition was likely to go into a pyrogenic arthritis.
She recovered with a few doses of Hepar sulphuris calcareum 200 and later 1M. She also
improved in her moods.
When this lady is not in this intense state she is very friendly, pleasant, cheerful and very
caring for her family members ("Delusion, members of the family are sick", "Anxious
about his family", "Cares about his relatives"). This lady also had frequent suicidal
thoughts.
Interestingly, Clarke in his "Dictionary" quotes Teste who "removed" with Hepar
sulphuris calcareum: "Dissatisfaction with oneself and others; dreamy atrabilious mood, a
sort of ferocious spleen, as though one could murder a man in cold blood" (even in
persons who are generally of a merry and benevolent disposition). Teste mentions in the
passing the merry and benevolent disposition while highlighting the violent aspect of
Hepar sulphuris calcareum. In fact, as can be seen in the case example (above), this
cheerful, caring aspect is as much part of the Hepar sulphuris calcareum nature as the
other, well-known, violent one.
