Baptisia.
The wild Indigo of America, Baptisia tinctoria R. Br., is a perennial herb
belonging to the Leguminosæ. A tincture is prepared from the fresh root.
General Action :- º It produces profound depression, with a tendency to
disorganization of the blood ; low type of fever and conditions simulating
malarial poisoning (dysentery and typhoid fever).
Compare Rhus, Arnica, Gelsem., (Apis, Bry., Phyto., etc.). º Paralytic
symptoms, Lathyrus, Oxytropis, Physostigma.
Generalities :- º Intolerance of pressure on all parts, could not rest back
against chair without pain, obliged to change sitting posture often even the
feet were painful from resting on floor (Arn., Bry.). º Pains in all parts on
which he lay, each time after waking from nightmare especially in sacral
region and hips, inducing the conviction that the position would soon cause
bed-sores, obliged to lie on his face to relieve the back and hips (Arn.). º
Rheumatic pains in right side. º Erratic pains in various parts.
º º Indescribable sick feeling over whole body. º Feeling as if he had taken
cold, soreness of throat and sneezing. º General feeling of having slept too
long and too hard, with bloated feeling in eyes. º Restlessness (Rhus) ; does
not sleep quietly, wants to get upset does not want to R. in evening. º
Faintness ; with trembling of legs and aching in them. º Weakness ; after
alight dinner at 3 P.M., with sleepiness ; especially in lower limbs with
weakness and vertigo (Gelsem.) ; in all parts, with bruised and sick feeling
yet does not feel very badly ; with tremulous feeling as if recovering from a
fit of sickness and as yet incapable of vigorous mental or physical exertion ;
amel. walking in open air which causes lachrymation ; with flashes of heat
from small of back in all directions. º Indisposition to move (Bry.). º Feeling
of inability to makes physical or mental exertion on going to bed. º
Weariness of whole left side of body ; in back and lower limbs especially
right after walking and in right shoulder and arm. º Stiffness and soreness
over whole body, with dread of motion ; stiffness of all joints as if strained. º
Paralysis of whole left side, left arm and hand numb and powerless. º
Aggravation of all symptoms after a glass of beer (Rhus).
Clinical :- º Weary bruised feeling over the whole body, especially in
the limbs. º Hysteria with great physical prostration, with numbness and
fear of paralysis, wanted to die, rubbed her hands all the item, restless. º It

is indicated in low types of disease, tendency to disorganization of the


blood, with restless and generally with delirium or stupor. º It may be
useful in low typhoid states of a great variety of diseases all the eruptive
and malarial diseases. º All the secretions are offensive, even the sweat
and urine with frequent attacks of faintness and exhaustion.

Mind :- º Excitement ; of brain like the beginning of delirium. º Disposition


to talk. º Low spirits. º Mind cannot be confined a wild, wandering feeling. º
Indisposition to think and inability to think. º Memory weak. º Stupid feeling
after breakfast. º Weakness rather than confusion. º Very distinct
recollection of what he had been reading.
Clinical :- º Delirium, with low fever, ideas confused, wandering
muttering, seems to be endeavoring to get pieces of the body together ;
incoherent muttering. º Brian fag, the head feels very heavy, is averse to
any mental effort and lacks the power to think.

Head :- º Aching, agg. noise ; agg. motion (Bry.) ; with bruised feeling in
forehead ; with pain in loins ; causing a sensation of wildness. º Heaviness ;
in morning after rising, with pain ; with pain in occiput ; as if he could not
sit up. º Feeling as if large ; and heavy. º Soreness of brain, agg. stooping. º
Confusion ; especially in occiput, where there were pain and fulness. º
Stupid feeling with pain at occiput. º Numbness of brain, with stitches or
shocks in various parts of head. º Vertigo ; with weak feeling of whole body,
especially of lower limbs, with weak knees. º Swimming sensation, as before
operation of an emetic.
Forehead :- º Aching ; in morning ; in evening, with smarting of eyes and
drawing pain down nose ; with pressure at root of nose ; with fulness of
whole head ; with pain in abdomen all the evening ; then passing to occiput ;
in anterior lobes of brain in afternoon, and in right frontal sinus ; in sinuses,
agg. right ; in right sinus ; over right eye ; sharp over right ; then left eye. º
Feeling as if it would be pressed in. º Tightness across, with pain over right
eye. º Soreness in front part of head in evening on moving eyes or turning
them upward.
º Pain in temples ; in right ; sharp pains in T. by spells. º Pain at base of
brain, with lameness and drawing pain in cervical muscles ; heavy P. at base
of brain (Petrol.). º Pressure in occiput in morning ; P. in occiput from
vertex ear and from vertex to nape. º Fulness of external vessels of head and
face. º Soreness of scalp.
Clinical :- º Feeling of great tightness of skin of forehead, it seemed to
be drawn to the back of the head, the head felt too large, heavy and numb
(in fever.).

Eyes :- º Shining. º Congestion of vessels, with redness and inflammation. º


Smarting and aching. º Feeling as if pressed into head, with confusion of
sight, cannot place anything until he looks at it a few seconds, everything
appears to move. º Swollen feeling with burning and lachrymation. º
Lachrymation on going into open air. º Soreness of balls (Eup. perf.) ; with
lame feeling on moving them (Agar.). º Partial paralysis of lids, it is difficult
to keep them open (Gelsem., Rhus.).

Ears, Nose and Face :- º Dullness of hearing. º Pain at root of nose. º


Soreness extends to posterior nares. º Sneezing and feeling as after taking a
severe cold. º Catarrh. º Thick mucous discharges from nose. º Face sallow.
Mouth :- º Teeth and gums sore, and much blood oozes from gum when
pressed with the finger (Merc.). º Tongue coated yellow ; along centre ;
coated yellow with flat bitter taste ; coated first white with reddish papillæ
here and there, then a yellowish-brown coat in centre the edges bring red
and shining and tongue feeling thick, coated white in morning and
congested ; feels scraped ; dry on waking (Rhus t.), and feeling burnt ; numb
pricking sensation. º Ulcers. º Salivation ; in evening ; then sore throat, with
scraping and burning ; then pain in right lung ; viscid and flat-tasting ;
sweetish bitter, then a dryish or glutinous substance, and the lips stick
together. º Taste flat, bitter ; filthy, with salivation ; of food not quit natural.
Clinical :- º The gums, mouth and throat are sore, ulcerated breath fetid,
salivation ulcerations, with red areola. º Useful in the sore mouths of
nursing infants and of nursing women. º Stomatitis of phthisis.

Throat :- º º Redness of tonsils and soft palate. º Congestion ; of tonsils and


soft palate ; of tonsils, with frequent inclination to swallow, which causes
pain at root of tongue (Phyto.). º Angina, throat feels swollen or full, with
oppressed respiration and sharp pains in chest when taking a long breath. º
Pricking in upper part. º Scraped sensation extending through it. º Soreness,
with a contracted feeling ; S. extending to posterior nares. º Rawness, with
much viscid mucus. º Constriction causing frequent efforts to swallow
(Apis., Lyc.). º Dryness extending to nares, with roughness and stringent
sensation, then increased secretion, especially from pharynx. º Tickling,
provoking cough.
Clinical :- º Diphtheria, the patient semi-comatose or delirious, could
swallow only liquids ; the face is dark red, and there is a horrible odor
from the mouth. º Contraction of œsophagus, with great difficulty in
getting food into stomach, could swallow only liquids.

Stomach :- º º Appetite lost. º Thirst. º Constant desire for water. º


Eructations of air. º Feeling as if it would be a relief to vomit. º Nausea ; in
evening ; with heat. º Feel as if he would vomit, but no nausea, with
shooting in left kidney and left side of umbilicus.
º Stitches in cardiac extremity. º Cramp in evening. º Pain ; in epigastric
region ; in epigastric region all night ; in S. and liver ; is S. and in right
hypochondriac and umbilical regions ; in S. and in right hypochondriac
region, the pain in right side very severe when walking ; in epigastric region
at night, agg. turning over, which he had to do constantly ; with belching of
much wind ; with feeling as if a hard substance were in it in pit with
constriction of diaphragm. º Intermittent pain in cardiac portion. º Pain in S.
and right hypochondrium, extending to spine, agg. motion ; in S., abdomen
and right hypochondrium passing down to right iliac region ; in S. and liver,
sharp at times. º Drawing pain in epigastric and right hypochondriac regions,
agg. walking. º Heavy pain in S. and liver, with heat in those parts. º Distress

all the forenoon and in abdomen with desire to vomit ; D. in epigastric and
umbilical regions with rumbling ; in S. and umbilical region, with pain in
region of gall-bladder ; burning in epigastrium, with colic in umbilical and
especially in hypogastric region, rumbling in abdomen and desire to vomit,
but no nausea. º Empty feeling.
Abdomen :- º º Distention. º Rumbling ; with desire for stool ; with mushy
stool. º Shooting pains all through. º Pain on pressure. º Distress. º Pain in
right hypochondriac region (Bry.) in region of gall-bladder, also agg.
walking (Diosc.) ; in liver, stomach and umbilical region ; in liver extending
from right lateral ligament to gall-bladder ; in liver and stomach, which
caused a numb feeling to pass all over the body. º Soreness in region of
liver. º Pain in umbilical region (Diosc.) ; agg. full inspiration ; with
rumbling in abdomen ; in umbilical and hypogastric regions, very sharp in
hypogastrium by spells. º Swelling of glands in left groin, very painful when
walking. º Cutting in hypogastric region at 1 A.M., waking him with
rumbling, then restlessness. º Drawing pain in right groin ; and in right
testicle and right foot.
Clinical :- º It has been found useful when there is great soreness over
the region of the gall-bladder, especially in diarrhœa.

Rectum and Stool :- º Rectum felt as if the drawings were upward instead
of downward. º Inactivity of lower bowels and rectum stool natural hut slow.
º Diarrhœa ; in morning. º Papescent stool, with much mucus, but no real
pain. º Constipation ; with hæmorrhoids in afternoon ; with fulness of
abdomen, flatulence, pain in hypogastrium, and soreness of abdominal
muscles as from cold or coughing severely.
Clinical :- º Diarrhœa in low types of malarial fever evacuations
horribly offensive, thin, fecal, usually dark. º Dysentery, discharges
bloody, some tenesmus, but not painful.

Urinary and Sexual Organs :- º º Burning when urinating, urine not very
copious but dark red. º Urine high colored. º Urine whitish has no effect on
blue litmus nor on red paper. º Shrivelling and relaxation of genitals, with
dragging pain in right testicle and spermatic cord, the same next day with
absence of sexual desire and with seminal losses from relaxation and inertia
of sexual organs, afterwards the aching in spermatic cord was very annoying
at night.
Respiratory Organs :- º Epiglottis swollen in morning. º Hoarseness. º
Breathing difficult (on waking from a dream of hard labor in snow, which
caused great heat, and finally of being smothered in the snow), the lungs felt
compressed, obliged to open the window, heat of surface, dryness of tongue,
increased pulsations of heart, rapid pulse and excitement of brain (as in
beginning of delirium), then chilly horripilations over lower limbs and back.
º Breathing difficult on lying down, from a feeling of weakness of
respiratory apparatus, such as he had only felt during fever, apparatus, such
as he had only felt during fever, obliging him to rise, with fear of going to
sleep lest he should have nightmare and suffocate (Lach.). º Breathing

oppressed at 6 P.M., with cough, soreness of right lung, sneezing, increased


secretion from bronchial tubes and fauces and expectoration of mucus. º
Constant want to take a full breath.
Chest, Heart and Pulse :- º Pain through left chest ; in sternum ; in right
lung, less in left, with soreness. º Constriction of chest, with oppression. º
Tightness of chest, with desire to inspire deeply. º Oppression in præcordial
region in afternoon, with a feeling of unsatisfied breathing. º Feeling of
increased compass and frequency of pulsations of heart, the pulsations seem
to fill the chest. º Audible throbbing of the heart. º Pulse rapid at 2 P.M. ; and
full, soft ; then faint ; slow and weak ; slow, round and full.
Neck :- º Pain unbearable on moving head. º Soreness of muscles. º Stiffness
of muscles, with lameness.
Back :- º Twitching of left latissimus dorsi. º Pain ; agg. walking ;
extending to sacrum. º Lameness of muscles of B. and chest, agg. moving
head. º Stiffness of B. and hips, with pain. º Pain in lumbar region ; agg.
walking ; heavy, in lumbar region at night on going to bed. º Pain in sacrum
compounded of a feeling as from pressure and fatigue from long stooping,
soon extending around hips and down right leg.
Extremities :- º º Aching ; drawing in arms and legs ; at times drawing, in
right wrist and left ankle ; wandering, with vertigo. º Prickling of hands and
feet, agg. motion, with numbness. º Thrilling through hands and feet,
somewhat like going to sleep or want of circulation.
Upper Extremities :- º Constant twitching of left deltoid. º Pain in left
shoulder and arm ; in left shoulder, extending down arm ; drawing in
shoulder and arms, agg. left. º Sore and stiff feeling in shoulders and chest,
the jar of the buggy in painful. º Numb prickling pain in hand and arm, agg.
movement with sharp darting pain through fingers. º Hands felt large and
were tremulous. º Numbness of left hand and forearm, with prickling.
Lower Extremities :- º Feel weak and vacillating on walking. º Pain in hips
and legs, with numbness. º Drawing pain in left hip ; in right hip and in both
calves. Soreness in anterior part or thighs, agg. after sitting. º Darting pain in
left knee and left malleolus. º Cramp in calves whenever he moves them. º
Drawing pain in calves ; in legs. º Pain in legs. º Numbness of left foot, with
prickling. º Prickling of foot and leg, they can be moved but little.
Skin :- º º Livid spots all over body and limbs, thickest on body. º Feeling on
forehead as if it would be pulled to the back part of the head, with numbness
in forehead and face. º Contracted feeling in forehead. º Tight feeling in
forehead, with pain over right eye ; T. feeling in forehead, with pain in
temples.
Sleep :- º Yawning while coversing with people. º Sleepiness ; all after
breakfast ; with stupidity and weariness ; with desire to have eyes half
closed. º Sleep unusually sound ; deep till 3 A.M. º Slept will till 2. A.M., then
restless till morning. º Fell asleep while sitting and writing ; in a carriage. º
Restless night ; with frightful dreams. º Sleeplessness ; after midnight ; after

2 A.M. after 3 A.M., with restlessness. º Nightmare, feeling on waking as if


the room were insufferably hot and close ; N., then anxiety after waking. º
Frightful dreams. º Dreams of being bound down with a chain across the
mouth ; of fighting and disputations, but always comes off best ; of
triumphing over all opposition ; continual.
Fever :- º Chill about 11 A.M., in evening on going into open air ; all day ;
with fever at night and rheumatic pains and soreness all over body ; of
surface ; over back in forenoon while sitting by a hot stove ; over back in
evening ; in lower limbs and back.
º Heat after going to bed. º Hot sensation over whole body, then sweat,
vomiting and diarrhœa, stool dark. º Heat in flashes on waking at 3 A.M.,
with feeling as if sweat would break out. º Heat in forehead ; on top of head,
with soreness of scalp ; in left side of face and in flashes ; of face, with
redness ; in left side of face and head, with prickling ; of lower limbs at
night ; in feet, with pulsation ; external H. of limbs, except feet, which are
cool. º Heat of whole surface, especially of face, the tongue dry on rubbing it
against roof of mouth, smarting and feeling sore as if burnt, compelled to
move to cool part of bed and finally to rise, open a window and wash his
hands and face, with a peculiar feeling in bed which is never felt except
during fever. º Dry heat of whole surface, with occasional chills, principally
up and down back.
Clinical :- º Typhoid fever, with great sensitiveness of the right iliac
region and soreness of the abdomen generally. º Generally useful in the
early stage of typhoid fever, restlessness, with muttering delirium, fetor of
breath and body, face dusky, etc.
