History of Chinese Fan Dance

The Chinese Fan Dance originated long ago during the Han Dynasty (200 AD), who
preserved the arts and danced with grace. Since the sun was bright and people
did not have other conventional methods of blocking their eyes; the Fan Dance
served as a way to shield the Chinese from the Sun as well as the sand. The
Chinese Fan Dance showed discipline to the mind and exercise for the body.

Since the creation of the first Chinese Fan, many more variants have been made,
such as using bamboo and ivory instead of wood. During the Song Dynasty, many
famous painters painted Chinese Fans, and also added a row of feathers to the
end. The Chinese Fan also received a handle.
