Problem solving instructions

Problem solving instructions.

• Write your solutions on a separate sheet of paper and scan it using Office lens (or any other image
scanning application).
• Write legibly and submit your answers in MS teams. Make sure that you turn it in before the deadline.
Compile all your answers in a singular PDF file with the file name of EXAM 1 MD1 - <your last name>
• To get the most accurate results on your answer key, do not round off any solved values or at least use 6
decimal places when answering the problems.
• Variables stated in the problems mostly revolve around your student numbers. When solving these
variables, take note of the order of your student number. To avoid mistakes, here is an example
2016-122469
o First digit SN. (Order is from left to right)
o 4th digit SN
o Last digit SN
o Penultimate SN

1. A simply supported beam is five meters in length. It carries a uniformly distributed load including its own
weight w of 300 N/m and concentrated load of L, X meters from the left end. The beam is made of A1
steel with a nature of loading N.
a. Basing your calculations on ultimate strength, determine the dimensions of the rectangular cross
section for h=2b
b. Determine the dimensions based on yield strength
Variable Formula
L – load (4𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡 ∗ 10) + 100

Ex: 2016-122469
(6 ∗ 10) + 100 = 180 𝑁
x – distance from the left side 𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑑𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡 𝑆𝑁
+1

Ex: 2016-122469
𝟗
+ 𝟏 = 𝟏. 𝟗 𝑴
𝟏𝟎
A1 – material of the beam Take the first letter of your surname

A to D – C1020 as rolled
E to I – C1035 as rolled
J to L – C1020 Normalized
M to S – C1144 OQT 1000
T – Z - C1020 Annealed
N – Nature of loading Take the last letter of your surname

A to F –Shock
G to M –Reversed
N to S –One Direction
T to Z - Dead load

2. A solid round steel shaft is subjected to vertical loadings as shown. The steel shaft weighs 20 lb/ft. Points A and B
will serve as the spots where the reaction forces occur. The shaft is to be made of X2 material. The type of loading
will be determined by the variable Y2 (formula for X2 and Y2). Considering bending only determine
a. Draw the complete shear and moment diagram for the given figure
b. Determine the minimum acceptable shaft diameter
c. Determine the diameter of the shaft if it is based on ultimate strength.

2500 lb 2500 lb 2150 lb

A B C

1 2

7” 22” 7” 8”
Variable Formula
X2 = AISI C10ZZ • 2015 – 00014 – Closest is C1015 cold
drawn
ZZ = nearest material code to the last 2 digits of
your student number • 2014-100063 - Based on table AT7,
the closest number to 63 is C1045 as
rolled
Note: For materials with the same code but with different conditions, use the
uppermost value of the material code when reading from top to bottom

For the case of AISI C1020, use as rolled since it is the uppermost value

Y2 – nature of loading Take the last letter of your surname and refer to
below

A to F – Dead Load
G to M – One Direction
N to S –Reversed
T to Z - Shock

3. A steel rod made of MS with a solid circular cross section is to be used as a column with an applied load
of LC at its center; Design factor to be used is 3. Determine the diameter of the rod for a length of 42
inches. Use E=30X106 psi with both ends pinned.
Variable Formula
MS – material of the rod Take the last letter of your surname and refer to the
range below

A to F – C1020 normalized
G to M – C1010 cold drawn
N to S –C1020 annealed
T to Z - C1035 as rolled
LC – Load applied on the rod in kips Sum of the last 6 individual digits of your student
number.

Ex: 2016-122469
=(1+2+2+4+6+9) = 24 kips
