"Indications which identify a good as originating in the
territory of a member, or a region or a locality in that
territory, where a given quality, reputation or
characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to
its geographic origin.“

 It is used to identify agricultural, natural, or
manufactured goods originating in the said area
 It originates from a definite territory in India,
 It should have a special quality or characteristics
unique to the geographical indication
 At the International level, WIPO and World Trade Organization’s
(WTO’s) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual
Property Rights (TRIPS).

 In India, Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and


Protection) Act, 1999 governs the Geographical Indications
registration. It came into force with effect from September 2003.

 The first product in India with GI tag was Darjeeling tea in the year
2004-05.

•Prevents unauthorized use of GI tag products by others
•It helps consumers to get quality products of desired traits and
is assured of authenticity.
•Promotes the economic prosperity of producers of GI tag goods
by enhancing their demand in national and international
markets.

Thanjavur Pith (Netti) works (Tamil Nadu)

Made from pith obtained from Aeschynomene aspera (netti), a


hydrophyte plant - found abundantly in lakes and marshy lands
surrounding Thanjavur and Mannargudi region in Tamil Nadu.

The pith work models are delicate to handle and are usually
preserved inside glass boxes. They resemble ivory and marble
handicrafts in looks
Kovilpatti Kadalai Mittai (peanut candy), Tamil Nadu

Produced from groundnuts and organic jaggery


obtained from specific locations. It gets its unique
flavour from the use of the special Theni jaggery
