Photoshop

Week 11
Photoshop is a graphic design
and an image software that
allows you to create and
enhance pictures, illustrations
and 3D artwork. It is beneficial
when designing websites and
making mobile apps (Adobe,
2018).
The Photoshop version that is
installed in UOB computer lab
(Building 28 in Isa Town Campus)
is Photoshop CS5 which was
realised in 2010 while the latest
version of Photoshop is CC. The
interface is different when you
compare Photoshop CS5 and
Photoshop CC. Also, some new
features and tools have been
added in the CC version.
Learning Outcomes
• Understand the capabilities of Photoshop and
its use with the creative industries.
• To be able to set up a document in Photoshop.
• Understand the layer concept of Photoshop.
• Understand the basic selection techniques in
Photoshop.
• Learn how to bring a plan from AutoCAD into
Photoshop.
• Learn how to the render the plan using solid
colours and patterns.

How to create a new document?
• You need to know what you want to use the document for before
you start creating it in Photoshop. The settings you will use for
printing is different than the settings you use for electronic form. The
resolution for printing should be 300 while for electronic form, it
needs to be 72.
• The short cut to create a new document is Control+N
• The shortcut for Zoom is Z or Control + and Control-

What is Layers?
• Layers allow you to work non-disruptively by stacking images on top
of other images without interacting and mixing the pixels of the
images.
• The background layer is by default locked. To unlock you need to
double click then press okay in the pop up window.
• The checker background means that the layer is transparent.
• You can always drag and drop an image to a layer to add it.
• Clicking on the eye symbol next to the layer name will allow you to
turn on and off a layer.
• Layer masks allow you to modify the opacity of the layer that they
belong to. You can have a different opacity across different areas in a
single layer. Black means that the item will not be visible while if you
use grey then it will be semi visible (semi-transparent) and white
means that you can see everything as it will be opaque.
• To disable a layer mask, press shift key and click on the layer mask.
• You can add different objects into layers such as images, text and
shapes.

What are the selection tools available?
• The shortcut to deselect is Control+D
• To constrain the elliptical marquee tool into a circle you need to press shift
• The single row/column marquee tools allow you to select the entire row/column
of pixels
• The lasso tool is a free hand selection method that is quickest but probably the
less accurate
• The polygonal lasso tool allows you to left click on selected points to create a
selection with a series of straight edges
• The magnetic lasso tool is useful to select area with well-defined edges (uses
edge detection)
• The magic wand tool allows you to select based on colour and tone
• The quick selection tool is a combination of magnetic lasso and magic wand

Getting Started
• Before bringing a plan from AutoCAD make sure that you do the following
steps in AutoCAD:
• Close all the doors in to allow you to add different flooring to each area
• Save in the correct scale that you would like to work on
• Save the PDF in Monochrome
• The reasons we add the artwork/floor plan from AutoCAD is to make sure
that line work is very clean and accurate.
• When you start using Photoshop, open a new document and set the file as
international paper and choose the size that you used in AutoCAD (for
example A3). Drag and drop the PDF file that has the artwork. Each layer
that will be set up for rending is basically a fill layer.

Walls and Layers
• Make sure that you add the line work using the steps listed in the
video above.
• Go to the layer that has the artwork/floor plan and select it.
• Use the magic wand to select the area you want
• Create a new fill or adjustment layer (it is a circle icon with white and
black) and select the colour you want using solid colour. Rename the
layer. Using this step will allow to change the colour at any time.

Floors and Pattern
• To add a pattern in Photoshop, you need to do the following steps:
• Open the pattern in Photoshop
• Go to Edit -> Define Pattern -> change the name -> okay
• Go to the floor plan file -> select the line work layer -> using the
magic wand, select the area you want to apply the pattern in -> go to
fill or adjustment layer icon -> select pattern
• The program will automatically add the last pattern that was created
• You can choose another pattern and type a number for the scale ->
