Print this exercise booklet before studying the lesson on-line. It will enable you to write your answers to
the HVAC learning exercises. You will thus be able to switch between reading or listening to the file on-
line and writing in the booklet.

CONDENSING BOILERS WITH DHW – PART 2

English lesson

For each exercise, you will write your answer, then you will study its correction on-line before going to the next
exercise.
If you cannot do an exercise, you will be able to study its correction directly, but force yourself to write your
answer as often as possible.

Note that between 2 exercises, you will find it necessary to study the course. As a warning, in the booklet, you will
sometimes find the following indication:
- “ Study the course on-line before doing the next exercise” or
- “ Study the course on-line before going to the next paragraph”

Only study the paragraphs or the exercises which have an equal or a lower level than the one your training
requires.
NVQ Level = Vocational Certificate
A Level = High school Diploma
HND Level = Associate’s Degree
MSC Level = Engineering Schools

Then, when you have completed a file, you will be able to assess your level on-line through a Multiple Choice
Questionnaire in which you will only answer the questions related to the themes you have studied.
So now off you go and work well!
Good luck!
The Authors.

N°1 – Recuperator through flow in heating off-season training – HND
level

Study the course on-line before treating the next exercise.

Question 1
Identify, below, the 4 valves to adjust at heating season end.
Detail with an O and an C the valves normally open and closed during the heating season.
Indicate with arrows the water circulation direction.

Question 2
Identify, above, the 4 valves to adjust at heating season end.
Detail with an O and an C the valves normally open and closed in the heating off-season.
Indicate with arrows the water circulation direction.

2
Question 3
In the heating system below, in the heating off-season can the closing of the primary heating pump be envisaged?

N°2 – Recuperator through flow in heating off-season – contd. training –

HND level
The through flow solution for the heating off-season of the recuperator studied in the previous § showed the
disadvantage of having to leave the heating circuit primary feed pump in operation.

Question 1
Modify below the positioning of connecting pipes of the recuperator in summer so that it would be possible to
stop the primary heating pump (on condition that the DHW production pump is sufficiently powerful to feed the
boiler in summer).

3
Question 2
Identify, below, the 4 valves to adjust at heating season end.
Detail with an O and an C the valves normally open and closed in the heating off-season.
Indicate with arrows the water circulation direction.

Question 3
Study below, the advantage of having connected to A rather than B and to C rather than D.

N°3 – Installation of a recuperator connected to the smoke outlet

training – HND level
Study the course on-line.

4
N°4 – Recuperator through flow with DHW training – HND level
Study the course on-line before treating the next exercise.

Question 1
A building of fifty 2-bedroom flats is equipped with 2 boilers of 175 [kW].
We fit one of the 2 boilers with a recuperator.
Calculate the volume of the planned-for pre-heating tank and confirm its capacity is sufficient.

5
Question 2
In the building previously studied (1 boiler of 175 [kW] fitted with a recuperator), we install a pre-heating tank of
2,000 litres (528 US gallons).
Calculate what temperature this stocked water could reach starting from 15 [°C] (59 °F), within the hypothesis of
continuous operation for 8 hours with no DHW draw-off.

For the building studied in the previous exercise (1 boiler of 175 [kW] fitted with a recuperator), during a cold night
with no DHW use, the pre-heating tank will probably increase from 15 + 60 = 75 [°C] (167 °F).
We can understand why it is necessary to have a substantial volume of pre-heating and install a mixer on the DHW
outlet.

Question 3
A building with 40 one-bedroom flats is equipped with a boiler of 250 [kW].
It is planned to fit this boiler with a pre-heating recuperator /condenser of DHW.
Calculate the volume of the pre-heating cylinder necessary, confirm its capacity and calculate what temperature it
could reach after 8h of boiler operation without DHW draw-off.

6
N°5 – Double recovery – heating and mains water training – HND level
