Effectiveness of Tubang Bukod as Pesticide

Background of the Study

(Introduction)
Tubang bakod is a common plant in the Philippines. Their seeds contain a toxic substance. This
is why it can be used effectively to kill cockroaches
Jatropha curcas L. commonly known as Tuba-tuba is one of the poisonous plant species in the
Philippines. It contains phytotoxins that are said to be dangerous when ingested. (Perino, 2006)
Several strategies have been considered for the control of GAS, including the use of chemical
pesticides. Since the continuous use of synthetic pesticides exerts adverse effects on the user and
the environment, investigations intotheuseofeffectivemolluscicides from natural sources were
carried out. The use of plants as pesticides has been studied and the results showed that it was an
effective indigenous approach to crop protection. Plants are known to contain secondary
chemical compounds as a component of the plant’s defense against plant-feeding organisms. A
review on botanical pesticides showed that although some plants are used locally against GAS
few research data had been published (San Martin et al., 2008). Jatropha curcas L. (J. curcas)
belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae and is also called Physic nut, Barbados nut and Purging nut.
It is locally known in the Philippines as “tawwa-tawwa (Ilocano)” or“tubang bakod”(Tagalog). It
has been cultivated in many countries as a source of alternative energy and has been supported
by research and government regulations.
Cockroaches are a common pest: they cause allergic reactions in people and damage clothing,
the real danger of cockroaches is in their ability to transmit diseases and lethal organisms such as
Staphylococcus and hepatitis. People have used various tools to control the problem of
cockroaches in homes; the most popular is the insecticide spray. Although many of these kill
cockroaches, they also cause harm to humans.

Experiment about tubang bakod which produces chemical to be used in insecticidal; to

prevent cockroach
Background of the Study
(Introduction)
Tubang-bakod is described as a soft, woody shrub with smooth gray bark that exudes a watery
sap when cut. It is a plant native to American tropics but it can also be found in the country of
Philippines. It serves people different purposes especially when it comes to medicinal uses, skin
diseases and wound treatment. Though it remains unpopular, Tubang-bakod is very common in
the southern to the northern parts, from low to high elevation and in hot and cold climates.
Jatropha curcas which is more popularly known as tubing-bakod, tuba-tuba or kasla is a very
ordinary plant especially in the rural areas (Perino, 2006).
In other countries, the seed is used as anthelmintic or abortive; the leaves as insecticidal.
According to the DOST (2022), they inhibit the production of cholinesterase, which leads to the
death of the insect.
Chemicals that block, or inhibit, cholinesterase can cause overactivity of a wide variety of bodily
functions, leading to multi-system acute effects that can be lethal.
Certain pesticides, such as organophosphates and carbamates, work by inhibiting cholinesterase.
Cholinesterase inhibitors are a group of chemical compounds used in everything from chemical
weapons, to pesticides designed to kill bugs (Staff, 2022).
As researchers, we still need to find out what exactly is in the tubang bakod and what other good
things it will bring. It has been experimental that the tubang bakod is not only a medicine but
also a chemical insecticidal that can kill insects like cockroaches and others. As a research our
goals are to have more knowledge about those species.
