Weather Disturbances

A weather disturbance is a general term that describes any pulse of energy moving through the
atmosphere.

They are important in that they can act as focusing mechanisms for storm formation, or even to
intensify low pressure systems.

They are typically mid or upper atmospheric troughs of low pressure that are embedded in the general
wind flow of the atmosphere

Thunderstorm

It is a small- scale weather system in which lightning and thunder are produced by a funnel- shaped
cumulonimbus cloud.

It is also known as an electrical storm, a lightning storm, thundershower or simply storm.

It is usually produces gusty winds, heavy rains, and sometimes hail.

A thunderstorm occurs when the skies darken , the winds pick up, lightning flashes, thunder roars, and
static is heard on your AM Radio.

May last for about 30 min. or even an hour.

Plays an important role in the hydrologic cycle and general circulation.

Are also engines of tropical disturbance that bring a large fraction of the annual rainfall to tropical
coastal regions.

Tropical cyclone

A tropical cyclone is a generic term for a storm with an organized system of thunderstorms that are not
based on a frontal system.

It is a low pressure system that generally forms over tropical ocean areas, and brings wind and thunder
storms.

Comes from the greek word “kyklos”, which means “coiling snake.

It rushes in a spiral motion and have a low pressure center called an “eye of the storm”.

Tropical cyclones with maximum sustained surface winds of less than 62 km/h are called tropical
depressions.
A storm system characterized by a low pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce
strong winds and heavy rain.

Tornado

Rotating columns of air usually produced by severe thunderstorms.

Torrential rains, flash floods, thunderstorms and typhoons are not new

to the Filipinos at any age. They are common occurrence in this tropical

country.Weather disturbance is a change in the atmospheric conditions that can lead to storm
formation.

The weather condition or the types of weather disturbances are: Tropical cyclones which is an intense
circular storm, tends to produce strong winds and heavy rainfall that may cause flash flooding. Tornado
is a small-diameter column of violent air that can cause destruction and great loss of life mainly from
flying debris and collapsing structures. Storm, on the otherhand, is a violent atmospheric
disturbance, characterized by low pressure cloud cover, precipitation, strong winds, and possibly lightning
and thunder.
