Junior Science Quiz 2022
Class: IV, V, VI
Main Round
Round: 6 Rocks
1. Deep inside, Earth is so hot, that the rocks melt. This melted and molten material
is known as Magma. Magma keeps getting pushed upwards towards the surface of
the Earth as lava because of the pressure inside.
Q. Name the type of rock formed after the cooling and solidification of lava.
A. Igneous Rocks are also called fiery rocks.
2. The hard parts of the organisms such as shells and bones either get preserved in
the sediments, (or) leave behind an impression on the sedimentary rocks. These
impressions in sedimentary rocks are known as fossils.
Q. What is study of fossils called?
A. Palaeontology
A Study of fossils tells us a lot about the types of living beings that existed on the
earth millions of years ago.
3. Sedimentary rocks are formed from older rocks that have been broken into tiny
fragments. These sink to the bottom and form into layers. Over millions of years
the pressure inside turned these layers into hard rocks.
Q. This is a type of sedimentary rock formed from the remains of plants that got
buried in the deeper layers for over millions of years. Formation of this rock is a
very slow process. Name the rock
A. Coal
When plants die they get buried in swamps layers of mud, sand and more dead
plants deposit in layers. The heat and pressure in the layers below gradually
change them into hard rock called coal.
(Finally display of coal formation (picture)
4. Metamorphosis means changing i.e., changing a substance completely into a new
one (or) different.
Even rocks undergo change in their appearance and their mineral composition.
These rocks are termed as Metamorphic rocks, which are formed from both
Igneous and sedimentary rocks,
Q. Identify the metamorphic rock here on the screen
Picture of state (rock)
Slate is formed by the metamorphosis of shale, a sedimentary rock. It is Shiny
found in grey and other colours which can be easily split into thin sheets. It is used
in making slates, black boards etc.,
5. Fuels are the substances that produce heat and light energy on burning
Eg: Coal, Wood, dung cakes, kerosene, petrol etc.,
Q. Which fuels are regarded as ‘Clean fuels’
A. LPG, CNG, Solar power
Clean fuel is a natural fuel like CNG (or) LPG. It produces less pollution than the
alternatives and it is used as a substitute for fossil fuels these produces
significantly less CO and fewer toxins and have less carbon content to ensure
minimal toxic emissions.
6. A fossil fuel is a hydrocarbon containing material formed underground from the
remains of dead plants and animals that humans extract and burn to release
energy for use.
Q. Name some fossil fuels.
A. Coal, Petroleum, natural gas, biomass
7. Rocks are generally classified into three types
a) Igneous
b) Sedimentary
c) Metamorphic
Q. Now, Identify the type of rock on the screen
Picture of pumice
Using the following clues
i) It is formed by the froth when lava cools quickly above the surface.
ii) It has tiny holes with trapped gases during its formation.
iii) It is a light rock
iv) It is used as body scrubber and also to polish floors and furniture.
A. Pumice
8. Name the process of transformation of rocks from one form to the other in a cyclic
manner naturally.
A. Rock Cycle
Display of Rock cycle
When hot lava cools down forms Igneous rocks. These again broke down into small
particles and then deposited. This results in the formation of sedimentary rocks.
Igneous and sedimentary rocks are subjected to great heat and pressure to change
into metamorphic rocks. And hence the cycle continues.
9. Monument is a building (or) structure (or) a site that is of historical importance (or)
interest. All the monuments are built using different rocks.
Ex: Gateway of India, Gol gumbaz, Tajmahal, Red Fort, Qutab Minar etc.,
Q. Name the type of rock used in the construction of Qutub Minar
A. Red sandstone, Marble, Sandstone
The first three storeys are made of red sandstone and fourth and fifth storeys are of
marble and sandstone.
Picture display of qutubminar
10. Many minerals that make up rocks contain metals. The metals can be obtained
from these rocks.
Q. What do we call the rocks that contain metals in them?
A. Ore
Ore is a natural rock (or) sediment that contains one (or) more valuable minerals
typically metals.
The process of extraction of metals from their are is called “Metallurgy”
1. Magnetite - Ore of Iron
2. Bauxite - Ore of Aluminium
3. Cuprite - Ore of copper
