Introduction

 During this presentation we will expand and upgrade an existing production

facility’s FactoryTalk architecture to explain how:
®

 Rockwell Software products fit together within a FactoryTalk Services

Platform application
 Explain the crosswire capability between different FactoryTalk
Services Platforms, CPR9 FTSP.
 How FactoryTalk View utilises SQL Server for it's Tag Database
 SQL requirements for Rockwell software products
 Discusses how to access automation servers from the outside world.
 Data Transfer methods

Base Architecture and Integration

Domain Vs. Workgroup

Copyright © 2013 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Domain vs. Workgroup

 Workgroup - Decentralized Administration

 Recommended only for small FactoryTalk applications and where user
accounts don’t change often.
 Domain – Centralized Administration
 Recommended for larger FactoryTalk applications consisting of more
than 10 computers, or environments with changing user accounts.
 Alternative / backup domain controller recommended
 Why is it important that the domain is highly available or Backup DC
 In general FactoryTalk services are dependent upon each of the 3
following services :
 Domain Name Server (DNS)
 DCOM services
 Authentication Services (i.e., download a value, navigate to a graphic,
acknowledge an alarm etc.)
Copyright © 2013 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 6
Type of Domain
 What type of domain to deploy - Single domain or multiple domain
 A single Domain provides several benefits
 Easier to Implement, Manage and lower cost
 Start with a single DC and includes a 2nd DC for redundancy
Simpler Disaster recovery
 Can FactoryTalk application use an existing domain?
 Although it is possible to incorporate the Rockwell Software products
within an existing Domain, need to consider local IT policies

FactoryTalk Directory Considerations

FactoryTalk Directory Considerations

 Placement of the FactoryTalk Directory

 Used to organize project information and share services, such as
FactoryTalk Security, Diagnostics, and FactoryTalk Live Data.
 The computer hosting the Network FTD should be highly available
 Recommended that the role of the Network FTD should be hosted on
a dedicated computer, (especially in any system that includes
redundancy
 All the computers participating in a particular application share a
common FactoryTalk Directory located on a network server.
 A single FactoryTalk Directory may host a single running FactoryTalk
Application in production environment.

FactoryTalk Topology Example
 FT Application: Used to organize project information and sharing of data
/ information available to all software products and all computers
participating in the FactoryTalk system.

 Area (Network Scope only) :Used to organize and subdivide a

distributed Network application into logical or physical divisions

FactoryTalk Activation Server

 Can the FactoryTalk Activation server be installed on the FactoryTalk

Directory

 Common practice is to co-locate the FactoryTalk Activation server

with the FactoryTalk Directory.
 Not recommended to co-locate the FactoryTalk Activation server
with either member of a redundant HMI pair

FactoryTalk Services Compatibility
 Can CPR9 FTSP SR versions be mixed in the same FactoryTalk system
 Starting with the CPR9 SR1, CPR9 FTSP manages cross-wire
compatibility allowing interoperability between computers running CPR9
SRx versions, thus provides the capability of upgrading any computer in a
system without affecting all computers.
 A set of computers can successfully run with CPR9 SR1, SR2 …..SRx
 In some cases, patches to older product versions may be required to maintain
compatibility with new FTSP SR versions
 When updating any CPR9 compatible FactoryTalk product, update the FTSP SR to
the product recommended version
 New product versions may require the latest FTSP SR to support a new product
feature
Always follow the individual product installation recommendations for
any other install dependencies

Data Server Consideration

Copyright © 2013 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Data Server Connectivity Consideration
 What will be connected to the Data server
 How many controllers will be connected to each data server?
 Number of tags on scan ?
 Is redundancy required ?
 Who needs the data from the controller ? And how often ?
 Will data concentrators be required ?

 3rd party OPC

 Data collection routing / network path ?

RSLinx Enterprise Connectivity
Consideration
 What is Maximum throughput of RSLinx Enterprise per controller?
 There are no defined limits of maximum amount of tags that can be
handled, (dependent upon the computer resources where RSLinx
Enterprise is installed).
 ~40,000 scattered tags per second is a good recommendation.
 Maximum number of shortcuts in RSLinx Enterprise?
 There are no defined limits on number of shortcuts that can be
configured or used within an application.
 What happens when multiple clients request same tag at different update
rates?
 The Logix DP driver will get updates at the quicker rate,

FactoryTalk and 3rd Party Data Server
Considerations

 FactoryTalk Installed on 3rd Party Data Server

 Is there any advantage of installing FactoryTalk Service Platform on the 3rd
party remote OPC server machine

 Manage redundancy of redundant 3rd party remote OPC servers

 Improved detection of disconnections / reconnections as will be doing
a local ping of the OPC Server instead of a ping across the wire

FactoryTalk Area Best Practices

 Any 1 Area contains

only 1 Server of any
type (HMI or Data)
 Any 1 installation of
a server instance is
referenced 1 time.
Value is then
‘shared’ with the
application.

Multiple Network Considerations

Copyright © 2013 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Multiple Network Architecture
Considerations

 Can I install and use multiple network cards in my server with

Rockwell products:
 Allowing connection to controller network and enterprise /
business network
 There are two common scenarios found in with multiple architectures
 NIC Card Teaming
 Two Ethernet cards connected to the same subnet in the same PC are only
supported when they are teamed.
 Multi-Homed PCs
 Connected to two different subnets - connected to the Control System Network
(CSN) and Enterprise

Multiple Network Architecture
Considerations

 If using this multiple network architecture, to avoid name resolution conflict

 The corporate network is considered as the main network where all
traffic expect controllers should run, (may be connected to other
networks via router)
 Name resolution is only available on the corporate network and is
registered to at less one DNS server
 Name resolution has to be available for all machines connected to
and communicating through the corporate network ,
 Any communication on the controller network is based on IP address
only, not on name resolution

This solution is not intended as the only possible solution e.g. use a DMZ

SQL Requirements

Database Considerations

FactoryTalk View SE – Tag Database
SQL Requirements

 SQL must be on the same computer as the FactoryTalk View SE

Server and the following versions are supported
 Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express & Standard (32-bit or 64-
®

bit)
 Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (64-bit)
 Examples when SQL DB already exist
 64 or 32-bit Full SQL exists (no named instance), then install SE
 The installation check will find that SQL Express isn't there and will install SQL
Express and our required named instance.
 Two SQL Servers (Full and Express, both 32-bit) side-by-side.

 64 or 32-bit Full SQL exists (with named instance), then install SE

 The ability to create the required named instance
 Only one SQL Server (Full version, 32-bit) and an named instance within that
Server.

Target is an OSI PI Historian

 Can I use the FTH2H if my Target Historian is a OSI PI

Historian Server

 No. If the Target Server is an OSI PI Server, you need to install the OSI
PItoPI Interface, rather than the Rockwell FTH2H Interface.
 The PItoPI with FTHSE only works where FTHSE is the Source
Server and a Native PI system is the Destination server
 The PItoPI interface cannot be used for FTHSE to FTHSE
communications
 For detailed information on the supported configurations of the
Source and Target Servers, refer to the FactoryTalk Historian To
