Major components of the Symmetrix DMX2000 have the following
functions:
Cooling fan modules — Twelve fans maintain air circulation and
cool the unit internally.
Card cage and midplane — Accommodate from up to 16 directors
(two to eight channel directors and four or eight disk directors), four
to eight global memory boards, and up to 16 adapter boards. The
director and global memory boards connect to the front of the
midplane. Adapter cards connect to the rear of the midplane. Two
Communication Control Modules (CCMs) and two Environmental
Control Modules (ECMs) are also located at the rear of the midplane.
Disk devices — Up to 288 low-profile disk devices provide data
storage. The Symmetrix DMX2000 supports 73 GB, 146 GB, 300 GB,
and 500 GB disk devices.
Battery subsystem — Two batteries maintain power to the entire
subsystem for 60 seconds prior to initiating shutdown, if AC power
fails.
Power subsystem — Two (N+1) power zones, supporting up to
twelve (total) power supplies in redundant scalable configurations
and two Power Line Input Modules (PLIMs). The power subsystem
connects to four dedicated or isolated AC power lines. There must be
at least four power supply modules (two in each zone) in a
single-phase system and a minimum of six power supply modules
(three in each zone) oin a three-phase system. Power supply modules
must be added two at a time on the DMX2000.
Integrated service processor — A service processor is used to
download the Symmetrix system configuration to the directors and
provide diagnostic and maintenance utilities for the Symmetrix
system. The service processor uses a serial modem for
communicating with the EMC Customer Support Center when the
Symmetrix system detects an error condition.

Major components of the Symmetrix DMX3000 have the following
functions:
Cooling fan modules — Eighteen fans maintain air circulation and
cool the unit internally.
Disk devices — Up to 576 low-profile disk devices provide data
storage. The Symmetrix DMX3000 supports 73 GB, 146 GB, 300 GB,
and 500 GB disk devices.
There must be
at least six power supply modules (three in each zone) in a system.
Power supply modules must be added two at a time on the
DMX3000.

Transportation and Symmetrix DMX systems delivered within the United States or
delivery guidelines Canada travel by air-ride truck or van. The Symmetrix DMX systems
are shrouded by custom-designed shipping material, crated, and
palleted. Integrated shock-absorbing casters on which the Symmetrix
DMX systems rest facilitate its movement during shipping and
installation.
Symmetrix DMX systems delivered internationally normally involve
air freight and are, therefore, crated for shipment.
Unless otherwise instructed, the EMC Traffic Department arranges
for delivery directly to the customer’s computer room. To ensure
successful delivery of the Symmetrix DMX systems, EMC has formed
partnerships with specially selected moving companies. These
companies have moving professionals trained in the proper handling
of large and very sensitive systems. These companies provide the
appropriate personnel, floor layments, and any ancillary moving
equipment required to facilitate delivery.

Symmetrix DMX power planning requirements
DMX1000 power The DMX1000 systems require single-phase AC power and contain a
requirements single power zone providing (N+1) redundancy for service to
redundant power supply modules. The DMX1000 can be populated
with up to four (4) power supply modules.
The customer is responsible for supplying and installing the required
receptacles on two separate branch circuit panels (power distribution
units) for main and auxiliary power for the Symmetrix DMX1000.
DMX1000/2000/3000 The customer is responsible for supplying and installing the required
optimal power wiring AC power feeds on separate circuits for the Symmetrix DMX systems
options in advance of delivery.
EMC recommends that these circuits reside on four separate branch
circuit panels (power distribution units) for main and auxiliary
power for the Symmetrix DMX1000/DMX2000/DMX3000.
Figure 1-11 on page 1-17 shows the actual label that is attached to the
DMX1000 power cables. This label shows the one power cabling
option. Figure 1-12 on page 1-18 shows the actual label that is
attached to DMX2000 and DMX3000 power cables. This label shows
each of the three possible power cabling options.

Symmetrix touch
current compliance
! CAUTION
The Symmetrix DMX1000, DMX2000, and DMX3000 cabinet power
supplies should not be connected on the separate Main and
Auxiliary circuit panels to differential trip devices. These devices
are typically called GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter), GFI
(Ground Fault Interrupter), ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker),
or Residual Current Circuit Breakers.
EMC CONFIDENTIAL
If the Symmetrix cabinet is correctly grounded to the customer’s AC
power source, leakage current should not produce a voltage leading
to electrical shock. Serious insulation breakdowns should trip the
breakers feeding the cabinet or, preferably, should first clear fuses in
individual internal modules closest to the fault.
EMC CONFIDENTIAL
Choosing a UPS The Symmetrix system is capable of supporting two consecutive
three-minute power outages before its battery power supply is
depleted. If you need to extend this time period, you will need to
purchase a UPS from a qualified vendor.
EMC neither offers nor recommends any specific UPS suppliers or
product type for its customers. This said, EMC uses preferred
suppliers for UPS systems in their facilities. Therefore, if you, the
customer, are implementing a UPS, EMC recommends the following:
◆ When you are planning the UPS solution for the Symmetrix
system and the host system is presently (or is going to be)
protected with a UPS, the battery backup time you propose for
the Symmetrix UPS solution should match that of the host
system.
◆ The Symmetrix system requires independent Main and Auxiliary
power feeds.
◆ The UPS should be equipped with an internal output isolation
transformer.
◆ The UPS should be installed as a separately derived AC source
using neutral and ground wiring to preserve the (N+1) or 2 (N+1)
fault tolerance specification of the Symmetrix power system.
Depending on the power requirements for your Symmetrix system
operation, an isolation transformer/stabilizer installed in front of the
UPS could further buffer the AC utility environmental factors from
reaching the Symmetrix system. To determine if an isolation
transformer/stabilizer is needed, consult a licensed electrician and
your EMC Customer Engineer.

following:
◆ If you place a channel online and it is not connected to a CPU
channel, its director display reads F5. Taking the unused channel
offline clears the display.
◆ If neither channel is online, the director display shows 0F.
Note these specific requirements for customers:
◆ You must run INIT using DSF because the format and label
parameters are stored in the directors. A customer running DSF
must use NOCHECK and NOVERIFY. DSF must be level eight or
greater when used with a Symmetrix system.
◆ If the Symmetrix system is connected to an IBM 309X, the
customer must update the IOCDS file with the Symmetrix
addresses.
