GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE
- is a progression in which each term is
obtained by multiplying the preceding term by
a fixed constant.
- is a sequence in which the ratio between a
term and its preceding term is the same.
The fixed number is called the COMMON
RATIO (r).
3, 6, 12, 24, 48, …
EXAMPLE:
Tell whether the following sequences are geometric or not.
1) 2,-6,18,-54,...

EXAMPLE:
The number of bacteria in a certain culture doubles every hour.
If there were 30 bacteria present in the culture originally, how
many bacteria will be present at the end of 2nd hour, 4th hour and
nth hour?
Given: If n = 3 If n = 5
a1 = 30 nth term an = a1rn-1 an = a1rn-1
r = 2 an = a1rn-1 a3 = 30(2)3-1 a5 = 30(2)5-1
n = 3, 5, an = 30(2)n-1 a3 = 30(2)2 a5 = 30(2)4
n a3 = 30(4) a5 = 30(16)
an = ? a3 = 120 a5 = 480
E Given:
X
A a1 = 7
a6 = 224
M
n = 6
P r = ?
L
E Therefore,
: the common
ratio is 2.
In the geometric sequence 2, 6, 18, 54, … which
term is 1458?
Given: an = a1rn-1
E
X a1 = 2 1458 =
A 2(3)n-1
M r = 3
P 729 = 3n-1 Therefore, 1458
L an = 1458 is the 7th term
E 36 = 3n-1 of sequence.
: n = ?
6 = n – 1
7 = n
6 18
2, __,
E ±12 36
4, ____,
X
A Given:
M
P a1 = 4
L a3 = 36 Therefore, the
E a2 = ? geometric mean
: is ±12.
Insert two geometric means between 3
and 375.
E 3, 15
___, 75
___,
X 375
A Given: 3, 15, 75, 375
M
P a1 = 3
L n = 4
E a4 = 375
: r = ?
3 + 6 + 12 + 24 + 48
…
= first term
= number of terms
= common ratio
EXAMPLE:
Find the sum of the first seven terms of the
geometric sequence -5, 10, -20, 40, …
Given:
a1 = -5
r = -2
n = 7
S7 = ?
Therefore,
the sum is
-215
Erin and her employer agreed that she will be paid based
on the following scheme: 1 peso on the first day, 2 pesos on
the second day, 4 pesos on the third day, 8 pesos on the
fourth day, and so on. How long would it take Erin to earn a
E
total of 127 pesos?
X
1, 2, 4, Therefore, Erin will take
A
7 days to have total
M 8, … earnings of 127 pesos.
P Given:
L
E
a1 = 1
: r = 2
Sn = 127
n = ?
If there are infinite terms in a geometric
sequence, then its sum is called Infinite
Geometric Series.
INFINITE GEOMETRIC SERIES FORMULA
Therefore, the
sum is 2.
A pendulum swings through an arc of 30 cm. On
each successive swing, the length of the arc is 85%
of the previous length. When it stops, what total
distance will the pendulum have swung?
E
X
A Given:
M
P
L a1 = 30 Therefore, the
E
: r = .85 total distance
covered by the
pendulum is
200cm.
