Zeros of Polynomial
Functions
Essential Question
x + 2 x - 15 = ( x - 3)( x + 5)
2
Factors : ( x – 3 ) ( x + 5)
of the polynomial x + 2 x - 15
2
Roots/ Solutions
Polynomial Equation
Rearrange the terms to have zero on one side:
x 2 + 2 x = 15  x 2 + 2 x - 15 = 0
Factor:
( x + 5)( x - 3) = 0
X = 3 and x = -5
Using synthetic division
3 1 2 -15 -5 1 2 -15
3 15 -5 15
1 5 0 1 -3 0
Since x = 3 and x = -5 both yields 0 remainder, they
are called zeros of the function.

y = x 2 + 2 x - 15
if x = 3
y = (3) 2 + 2(3) - 15 = 0
y=0
