What is the Change of Base Formula

and when to use it
a formula that helps evaluate logarithms with different
bases
most calculators only have two log keys (for base 10 and
base e)
there are two ways to do it: common and natural

The Formula

log a ( b )

log c ( b )
log c a

a represents the given base

b represents the exponent
(power)
c represents any base your
calculator can use (base 10
or e)
this applies to both common
and natural ways (just use
log for common and ln for
natural on your calculator)

Example 1

log 61 / 3

log a ( b )

log c ( b )
log c a

Example 1

log 61 / 3

= -0.613147192

Example 2

log 23

Example 2

log 23

= 1.584962501
