Introductory Message
Welcome to learning area and grade level!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Negros Occidental and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Technology and Livelihood Education Activity Sheet will help you facilitate
the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be
made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Technology and Livelihood Education Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner,
carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET (LAS)

Quarter 2 Week 8

I. LEARNING COMPETENCY WITH CODE: TLE_AFAC9HC-IIf-j-4

LO 4. Cleanup on completion of cropping work

4.2. Clean, maintain and store tools and equipment according to manufacturers’
specifications.
4.3. Report work outcomes to the authority following established reporting formats.

II. BRIEF DISCUSSION OF THE LESSON/CONCEPT:

 Wear with your working clothes and personal protective equipment (PPE) and
proceed to the shop to retrieve your tools so that you can start clearing, cleaning, and storing of
tools.

How to Clean, maintain and store Your Tools and Equipment:

Some tools used in maintaining tools and equipment:

1. Whetstone - is an ideal tool to use to keep all of the cutting edges of your garden tools
honed with lubricating oil.
2. Bench vise - is ideal for the job that you will be able to clamp the tool into place at an angle,
so you can work on it. Clamping the garden tool into place with a vise frees up both of
your hands to use the whetstone and gives you more control over what you are doing.
3. Lubricating oil - it would be applied to the end of the tool and carefully begin to work the
stone over the blade. Maintain a 30- degree angle between the stone and the blade to
form the ideal cutting edge for your tool. Not only will the edge become sharper, but
you will also be removing any pitting and rust that has formed at the edge of your tool‘s
blade.
4. Steel wool - Used in removing stubborn rust from small tool also prevent the formation of
rust.
5. old toothbrush - with some lightweight lubricating oil is a great way to work fresh oil into the
joints of most garden tools.
6. Sandpaper - Used to remove rust on larger tools such as shovels, spades, and hoes.
7. File - stabilize the blades in a vise or against a solid surface such as a work bench to avoid
injury and ensure an even stroke and do not use lubricating oil.

Cleaning Tools
 Old Rags or Towels
 Detergent or Dish washing liquid
 Garden Hose
 Sprayer
 Sponge
 Steel Wool
 Sandpaper (80 and 120 Grit)
 Scrub Brush
 Wire Brush

Sharpening Tools
 Metal File
 Oil
 Angle Grinder
 Bench Grinder
 Grindstone

Safety Tools
 Dust Mask
 Eye Protection
 Gloves
 Body protection

How To Clean & Sharpen tools and equipment:

Step 1: Clean
1. Use a garden hose to wash off the dirt, grime, mud or soil.
2. Scrub away the dirt and sap from the blades using a stiff brush with a detergent or dish
soap.
3. Rinse off with water and dry the blades with an old towel.
4. Use steel wool (#3 semi-coarse) to buff off rust spots and any tough matter that remains.
High grit sandpaper is also an excellent alternative to steel wool.
5. Soak the tools in a container with rubbing alcohol Isopropyl (70%) diluted with water or
disinfecting household cleansers like Lysol for at least 5 minutes. Remember that the
container must be deep enough to soak the blades thoroughly.
6. Rinse off the disinfectant with water.
7. Wipe off dry with an old towel.

Step 2: Sharpen
The following steps in sharpening vary among the types of gardening tool.
For Pruning Shears, Knives and Hatchets
.
1. File the edge in one direction to expose clean metal by using a coarse diamond file.
2. Start at the inside of the blade, draw the file toward the tip in a curved motion.
3. To further sharpen the bevelled edge, use a fine diamond file. Use the extra-fine
diamond file and do the same over the back side of the blade.
4. Lubricate or coat with oil.

For Lawnmower Blades

1. Disconnect the spark plug of the lawnmower.
2. Remove the blade from the lawnmower using a wrench. Spray lubricant oil if the
bolt or nut is too tight.
3. Lock the blade in place by clamping it on a vice.
4. Sharpen the dull blade with a file in one direction: from inside of the blade toward
the outside, following the side of the cutting edge. More or less you will need to do 50
strokes of filing.
Tip: Please do not make it as razor sharp as it will dull too quickly. The rule of
thumb is that it should be as sharp as a butter knife.
5. Optional: If you have a bench grinder you can also use it as an alternative to a file,
however, you must be able to control it so the blade will not overheat which may
cause damage to the blade.
6. Lubricate or coat with oil.

For Shovels, Spades, Hoes, and Trowel

1. Secure the tool tightly in a vice.
2. File from the inside edge of the tool in a 45-degree angle using a file. A shovel has a
single bevelled edge, remember not to sharpen the opposite side of the edge.
3. Continue to sharpen with a few light strokes along the backside until you see a shiny
bevelled edge appear
4. Lubricate or coat with oil.

For Rake and Hand Rakes

1. For rake and hand rakes, file downward in the direction of the edge. Use small
files to reach around the tines.
2. Lubricate or coat with oil.
Tips to prolong the usability and functionality of tools and equipment:
1. Farm tools, implements and equipment should be checked thoroughly before use.
2. Loosened bolts and nuts should be tightened firmly.
3. Disc plow and harrow should also be lubricated on their moving parts like bearings.
4. Tractors should be tuned-up very well by skilled operator. Check on their oil, lubricant, fuel
and cooling system.
5. Tools that are worn out should be separated and be fixed immediately to avoid accident

Evaluation:
While performing the activity it is important for you to assess your performance following the
criteria below:
1. The blade is properly sharpened.
2. The nut is properly removed and returned.
3. The step by-step procedures are correctly followed.
4. The safety precautions are properly observed.

Advantages of cleaning and sharpening of farm tools:

1. Easier to use if you take a few minutes to knock some of the rust off the blade.
2. Increase your practice’s profitability
3. Prolong the functionality span of tools and equipment
4. maintenance routine extends the life of your gardening tools
5. Clean and sharp tools are also much more effective and efficient.
6. they must be clean and sharp.
7. Gardening tools that are free from rust and bacteria will prevent infecting healthy plants with
any disease

Storage Tips for Your Garden Tools

1. The key to having your garden tools organized is to create storage for them, so everything
stays in place. These tips below show some ways on how you can store them in unique ways.
2. Purchase a hanging rack or build one using a lumber wood, metal brackets, and screws.
3. Drill old hooks and knobs on the wall so you can hang your shovel, rake, hoe and other tools
