Text 1

By considerable measure, the largest known animal on Earth is the blue whale. Mature blue
whales can measure anywhere from 75 feet (23 m) to 100 feet (30.5 m) from head to tail, and can weigh
as much as 150 tons (136 metric tons). That's as long as an 8- to 10-story building and as heavy as about
112 adult male giraffes! These days, most adult blue whales are only 75 to 80 feet long; whalers hunted
down most of the super giants. Female blue whales generally weigh more than the males. The largest
blue whale to date is a female that weighed 389,760 pounds (176,792 kg).

A blue whale's head is so wide that an entire professional football team -- about 50 people --
could stand on its tongue. Its heart is as big as a small car, and its arteries are wide enough that you
could climb through them. Even baby blue whales dwarf most animals. At birth, a blue whale calf is
about 25 feet (7.6 m) long and weighs more than an elephant. And they do grow up fast: During the
first 7 months of its life, a blue whale drinks approximately 100 gallons (379 liters) of its mother's milk
per day, putting on as much as 200 pounds (91 kg) every 24 hours. An adult blue whale can eat more
than 4 tons (3.6 metric tons) of krill, a tiny shrimp-like creature, every day.

This puts blue whales well above any known land mammal in terms of size. Most people believe
that the largest animals to ever exist on Earth were the dinosaurs. However, one of the largest land
dinosaurs, the Sauropod Argentinosaurus, weighed only about 180,000 pounds (81,647 kg). That's little
more than half the size of an adult blue whale. It makes a lot of sense that the world's largest animal
would be a sea creature. Land animals have to support their own weight, whereas sea creatures get
some help from the water.

It is believed that at one time there were more than 200,000 blue whales. There are only
about 10,000 blue whales now -- they've been on the endangered list since the mid-1960s -- and the
population is not expected to recover.

Soal The main idea of the passage is….

A. Blue whale is on the endangered list since 1960s.

B. Female blue whale is weighed more than male blue whale.

C. It makes sense that the world’s largest animal must be a sea creature.

D. Blue whale is known as the world’s biggest animal on earth.

E. Dinosaurs is the largest land animal.

Pembahasan Pembahasan:

utama melainkan kalimat pendukung.

Kalimat pertama paragraf kesatu:

“By considerable measure, the largest known animal on Earth is the blue whale.”

tentang paus biru.

Soal According to the passage, why does recent adult blue whales get smaller?
A. Because the number of krill—their source of food—is decreasing recently

B. Because it is the effect of their action to survive from hunters

C. Due to the massive whale fishing of the enormous blue whales

D. Because they are on the endangered list since 1960s

E. Due to the hunter activity on hunt the blue whales’ calf

Pembahasan Pembahasan:

Frasa
“whale fishing” memiliki arti yang sama dengan frasa “hunted down” dan frasa “of the
enormous blue whales” memiliki arti yang sama dengan frasa “most of the super
giants”.

Kalimat ke empat paragraf pertama:

“These days, most adult blue whales are only 75 to 80 feet long; whalers hunted
down most of the super giants.”

Soal Why does Sauropod Argentinosaurus mentioned in the passage?

A. To describe the Sauropod Argentinosaurus which is known as the biggest mammals
on earth
B. To give evidence that land creature is the world’s biggest animal

C. To prove that Sauropod Argentinosaurus which people believe is the largest animal
on earth is smaller than blue whale
D. To compare it to blue whale in terms of size

E. To support idea that dinosaurs are not the largest world’s creature

Pembahasan Pembahasan:

Argentinosaurus memiliki tujuan lain.

“Most people believe that the largest animals to ever exist on Earth were the

Coronavirus: Companies tell workers 'stay at home'

Companies in China have advised staff to work from home in an attempt to slow the spread of
the deadly coronavirus. Businesses are also offering workers longer holidays, as well as telling
employees returning from the most affected areas to stay away from work. It comes after the Chinese
government extended the Lunar New Year holiday by three days to Sunday. At least 80 people have
now died in China from the disease, with almost 3,000 confirmed cases around the world.
Bytedance, which owns the video-sharing platform TikTok, and Chinese gaming giant Tencent have
told staff to work from home. Hotpot restaurant chain Haidilao has shut its branches across China until
Friday. On Sunday, the government of the city of Suzhou said businesses there would remain closed
until at least 8 February. Suzhou is a manufacturing hub in eastern China, home to a major
pharmaceuticals and technology business park. Several companies, including Swiss banking group UBS
and property developer Country Garden, have told staff returning from the city of Wuhan or Hubei
province to quarantine themselves at home. In Hong Kong, the stock exchange has cancelled a
ceremony scheduled for Wednesday to mark the first day of trading day of the Lunar New Year, due to
concerns over the risk of infection.
Global markets have also been hit by growing concerns from investors that measures to halt the
spread of the flu-like virus will have a negative impact on the global economy. In Tokyo, Japan's
benchmark Nikkei 225 share index fell by 2% after the Chinese government announced this weekend
that it would extend the week-long Lunar New Year holiday. Stock exchanges in Shanghai and
Shenzhen, which had been due to reopen on 31 January, are now scheduled to stay closed until 2
February.
On the commodities markets, prices of everything from oil to copper have fallen as traders bet that
global demand will fall while Chinese cities remain in lockdown. Brent crude oil was down by 2.2% on
deepening concerns about demand for energy, despite attempts by Saudi Arabia's energy minister to
ease market jitters. Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud said he was closely monitoring developments
in China and was confident the virus would be contained. London copper prices fell by 1.9% to the
lowest level in almost eight weeks. That followed last week's 5.5% slide, the steepest weekly decline in
five years.

Bears are mammals that belong to the family Ursidae. They can be as small as four feet long
and about 60 pounds (the sun bear) to as big as eight feet long and more than a thousand pounds
(the polar bear). They’re found throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
They have non retractable claws, short tails, and excellent sense of smell. They’re typically
solitary, except for mothers with cubs. There are eight species: Asiatic black bears (also called moon
bears), brown bears (which include grizzly bears), giant pandas, North American black bears, polar
bears, sloth bears, spectacled bears (also called Andean bears), and sun bears.
On average, bears can live up to 25 years in the wild and 50 in captivity. Six species, including
the polar bear and the giant panda, are included on the IUCN Red List as threatened or vulnerable.
During winter, when food is scarce, most bears have an effective survival solution:
hibernation, a physical state in which the heart rate, body temperature, metabolism, and respiration
is lowered. Grizzly and black bears can go for 100 days or so without eating, drinking, urinating, or
defecating. They live off a layer of fat that they build up during the summer and fall.
Female bears rouse during hibernation in their dens to give birth to up to four cubs. Giant
pandas, which do not hibernate, usually give birth to just one cub. After a couple of months, the cubs
are strong enough to totter out after their mother—except for sloth bear cubs, which hitch a ride on
their mother’s back. (nationalgeographic.com)

Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the most ferocious predators to ever walk the Earth. With a
massive body, sharp teeth, and jaws so powerful they could crush a car, this famous carnivore
dominated the forested river valleys in western North America during the late Cretaceous period,
68 million years ago.
Tyrannosaurus rex, whose name means “king of the tyrant lizards,” was built to rule. This
dinosaur’s muscular body stretched as long as 40 feet—about the size of a school bus—from its
snout to the tip of its powerful tail. Weighing up to eight tons, T. rex stomped headfirst across its
territory on two strong legs. These dinosaurs likely preyed on living animals and scavenged
carcasses—and sometimes they even ate one another.
The head of a T. rex was the real stuff of nightmares. This fierce carnivore was optimally built
for crunching through its meals, with a stiff skull that allowed it to channel all the force of its muscles
into one bite—delivering up to six tons of pressure. This dinosaur used its 60 serrated teeth, each
about eight inches long, to pierce and grip flesh, throwing prey into the air and swallowing it whole.
To keep itself from overheating while crushing prey with its mighty jaws, the giant animal had vents
in its head to help its brain stay cool, similar to those found in alligators.
Tyrannosaurus rex was also adept at finding its prey thanks to a keen sense of smell. While
scientists have known for a while that this dinosaur devoted large portions of its brain to processing
smell, studies have recently revealed that T. rex had almost as many genes encoding its olfactory
receptors as a house cat does today. This powerful snout also likely helped T. rex find mates and
detect other predators.(nationalgeographic.com)

Baseball evolved from a number of different ball-and-stick games (paddle ball, trap ball,
one-old-cat, rounders, and town ball) originating in England. As early as the American
Revolution, it was noted that troops played “base ball” in their free time. In 1845 Alexander
Cartwright formalized the New York Knickerbockers’ version of the game: a diamond shaped
infield, with bases ninety feet apart, three strikes-you’re-out, batter out on a caught ball, three
outs per inning, a nine man team. The “New York Game” spread rapidly, replacing earlier
localized forms. From its beginnings, baseball was seen as a way of satisfying the recreational
needs of an increasingly urban-industrial society. At its inception it was played by and for wealthy
gentlemen. A club might consist of 40 members. The president would appoint two captains who
would choose teams from among the members. Games were played on Monday and Thursday
afternoons, with the losers often providing a lavish evening’s entertainment for the winners.
During the 1850-70 period the game was changing, however, with increasing
commercialism (charging admission), under-the-table payments to exceptional players, and
gambling on the outcome of games. By 1868 it was said that a club would have their regular
professional ten, an amateur first-nine, and their “muffins” (the gentlemanly duffers who once
ran the game) Beginning with the first openly all-salaried team (Cincinnati’s Red Stocking Club)
in 1869, the 1870-1890 period saw the complete professionalization of baseball, including
formation of the National Association of Professional Baseball Players in 1871. The National
League of Professional Base Ball Clubs was formed in 1876, run by business-minded investors in
joint-stock company clubs. The 1880s has been called Major League Baseball’s “Golden Age”.
Profits soared, player’s salaries rose somewhat, a season of 84 games became one of 132, a
weekly periodical “The Sporting News” came into being, wooden stadiums with double-deck
stands replaced open fields, and the standard refreshment became hot dogs, soda pop and
peanuts. In 1900 the Western League based in the growing cities of the Midwest proclaimed
itself the American League.
