“CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT”

Change, one word with a massive impact on the lives of millions of people. Change is the
only constant thing in this world. We all face changes every day – whether it is a simple change
in the weather, our schedule, or an expected change of seasons. Change affects us all and we
each deal with change differently. This is the only constant in life, the only thing we can be sure
will happen. There are two things that may happen during change: to diminish or to evolve.
Evolving is to change or to develop, and that is inevitable. One area that has evolved through
the years is the area of media. Media can be the communication outlets or tools used to store
and deliver information or data. Just as how people grow into more mature human beings as
time passes by, media has had its own change and evolution through the years. According to
sources, researchers have acknowledged that the history of media dates back before even people
existed.

According to researchers, media existed way back in time. It was represented by signs
during these ancient times. They include watching the weather patterns to foretell if rain was
imminent near future or not. Climatic patterns were read from signs and symbols which formed
part of the media. During these ancient times, communication was easily achieved since they
did not convey complex information, until humans and their demands from cultural practices,
technological advancement, and the need for mass communication in society.

Evolution and civilization began with new cultural practices. In the old days, information
was written down on paper by word of mouth or by letter or scribbled on stone tablets or
ancient Egyptian papyrus tables. The media consisted of messengers who accomplished this by
riding back to the recipient's location on horseback. However, the turning point came when
urgent problems needed to be resolved. This has led to the development of new communication
strategies. Corresponding innovation was needed in order to cope. Technological advances that
are being gradually experienced across the planet have also contributed to changes in message
delivery. As mentioned earlier, the urgency and speed of message delivery have led to the
development of new strategies for delivering messages. Letters were introduced in the 17th
century to aid in this process. A person who must have been a postman was hired to send letters
to various locations. Then the phone was introduced to people. This was boosted by the
introduction of mobile phones and the Internet in the late 1970s.

The older forms of media forced the audiences to be passive consumers of the content
provided to them, in the sense that there was only so much that they could do. The new forms of
media allow audiences to not only consume content but also produce content. Therefore, we’re
becoming Prosumers: producers+consumers. Earlier audiences could only read or watch the
news. Today they can produce news through blogs, social media, or Citizen Journalism portals.
Newspaper circulation is limited to a specific physical space, and television content stays within
the reach of its home country audience unless it is uploaded to the Internet. As such, older
media have limited range and reach. New media, on the other hand, have a much greater reach
and reach. Once everything is online, it will be accessible to almost anyone with a computer and
internet connection. But questions about the 'digital divide' cast this argument into skepticism.
The majority of the population still does not have access to smartphones or the internet. As time
has passed by, the media has also been different. The 60s brought along many new changes in
the way media is produced. The use of the television in the 60's played a very important role in
the media for these times dealt with not only political changes but also social, cultural, and
psychological changes. From civil rights issues to cult movements and student protests, people
were faced with many different situations that affected everyday life. Television news
broadcasts kept people informed as to the many situations going on in the world. Furthermore,
there is no doubt mass media has progressively modernized throughout the years and has
effectively helped many of us reach out to our loved ones.

The evolution of media, from old media to new media, has transformed the way we
understand the world around us. It gives us a new perspective by allowing us to interact with
one another through the internet. Media has become much more personal and diverse as user-
generated content becomes more prominent in our lives. Moreover, change in technology has
brought advancement to transportation methods, which makes it very easy and fast to go long
distances than before. It has also brought a change in communication, with the development of
mobile phones, where communication is now more efficient. Technology has also brought
changes in education where students can do online courses, take exams, quizzes, do
assignments, and even discuss with their classmates the related topic of each week as if they
were in the actual classroom. The changes in technology play a big part in the media and how it
is used. The technological changes made throughout these time periods have made
communication and the media widely spread.

The past isn’t here anymore, the future cannot be seen and the only thing permanent is
the present moment and nothing else. Everything is the result of the change. There is nothing to
question – change is the only constant in life. If societies and countries refuse to change, there
will be no growth or progress. The inability to change, move forward, and grow can lead to
stagnation. Stagnation refuses to live up to its full potential. Stagnation is not a healthy river
flow. It is an idle and rotten pond.
