EXPERIMENT #10
HORMONES AND THEIR EFFECTS

Introduction
Hormones are chemical substances in the body. They are made by endocrine glands
which pass the hormones directly into the bloodstream. They are carried around the
body in the blood and, in this way, hormones can cause changes at some distance from
the gland where they were made.

Many processes in the body are coordinated by hormones which regulate and balance
the working of organs and cells. Some hormones have long term effects, for example,
the hormones that control how we grow and the changes that happen at puberty. Other
hormones have shorter term effects.

Sex hormones are responsible for some of the most dramatic changes that occur in the
body. They control puberty, egg and sperm production, pregnancy, birth, and lactation
(breastfeeding).

Approximately once a month, girls experience menstruation which is bleeding through

the vagina. This is caused by the breakdown of the lining of the uterus (womb) and is
part of the cycle of events called the menstrual cycle.

In this activity, you will study the monthly variation in levels of hormones, and the
parts of the female body that are directly involved in the menstrual cycle.

Objectives
After completing the activity, the students should be able to:
1. Explain the role of hormones involved in the female reproductive system; and
2. Describe the feedback mechanisms involved in regulating processes in the female
reproductive system (menstrual cycle).

Materials
 Laptop

Procedure

Online
1. Go to https://www.abpischools.org.uk/topic/hormones/4/1
2. Explore the menstrual cycle in the interactive site by selecting a section to view:
-Days 1-4
-Days 5-14
-Days 14-28
-Days 0-28

a) Look at the chart and carefully study the levels of hormones as you click a
section for viewing.

Post-Laboratory Questions
Interactive Simulation

1. Describe what happens at around day 14 of the menstrual cycle.

In Days 14-28, this phase happens when the ovary starts to release the egg, and it
is called ovulation. During this phase, the reproductive hormone production
increases as the egg is released from the fallopian tube to the uterus. Usually, the
estrogen level increases and triggers the Luteinizing Hormone from the pituitary
gland, thus releasing the egg from the follicle.

2. Which hormone causes the thickening of the uterine lining?

In the first phase of the menstrual cycle, the estrogen hormones causes the lining
to thicken as preparation in the uterus for pregnancy. Estrogen hormones are
responsible for female sexual and reproductive health, as well as the growth of
secondary sexual characteristics in women.

3. In the box below, make a simple flow chart showing how hormones are involved
in every stage of the menstrual cycle. Identify the hormones in each stage.

4. Arrange the following events in correct sequence as they occur in the menstrual
cycle. Use numbers 1-7, with 1 being the first to take place, and 7, the last.
4 Ovulation occurs.
_____
1 Menstruation occurs.
_____
6 The egg disintegrates.
_____
7 The uterus lining breaks down.
_____
3 An egg matures ready for release.
_____
2 The uterus lining thickens with blood vessels.
_____
5 The egg travels down the oviduct or fallopian tube.
_____

Conclusion

In concluding this experiment, we have learned the different phases of the menstrual cycle from Days
1 to 28. The reproductive hormone system regulates the menstrual cycle, which is required for
reproduction. Between puberty and menopause, women's menstrual cycles usually occur on a monthly
basis. We have observed the monthly variation in levels of hormones as the phase goes on by days and
this is the process wherein, we can see the thickening of the uterus lining and how the egg releases
from the ovary going through the fallopian tube, and disintegrates into the uterus.
