collecting statistics on demographics, the economy, and other facts about the country and
disseminating the information published reports of central and state government and local
bodies. Statistical abstract, census reports and other reports published by different ministries of
the government. Official publications of the foreign governments some sources are:

 Bangladesh Education Statistics.

4
 Bangladesh Labor Force.

Q-3: What are the sources of semi - govt. statistics? Explain

Economics, Research Scholars, Bureau etc. Published works of research institutions and
universities etc.

Q-4: What are the sources of non-official sources statistics in Bangladesh?

Explain
The sources of non-official sources statistics in Bangladesh are given below:

UNIDO: In the case of UNIDO's INDSTAT database, the transformation of original data is made
in five stages. At first stage, only obvious reporting errors are corrected in order to keep the
data in original form; in the second stage, inconsistent data are corrected using supplementary
information from the national sources. Up to stage 2, data are considered as official and used to
prepare the country tables for the International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics.

FAO: Another example of the use of non-official sources is the work done by FAO to estimate
fertilizer production, trade and consumption. Reliable data on fertilizer are pivotal for several
important purposes, including medium-term forecasting, national policy planning and
monitoring, analysis and policy related to environment. The main sources of data are official
data received by FAO from countries with supplementary data from non-official or mixed
sources from the International Fertilizer Association (IFA).

UNWTO: Tourism is e typical and recent example of developing jointly official statistics and
complementary data from non-official sources. Both governmental and private stockholders
identified the need to improve the analysis of tourism's contribution to national economics with
a wider range of indicators then those "Pivoting exclusively on official statistics” and usually
produced by national accounts and balance of payments.

ITU: A similar example of relying on a mix of official and unofficial data sources is provided by
the ITU. In a field of constant innovation and permanent changes, compiling and harmonizing

5
telecommunication/ICT data is a challenge. In addition, ICT optimizes with the globalization of
business models and the internationalization of standards, a situation where national official
definition are rapidly obsolete.

WTO: Finally, the last example on building statistics for market access and non -tariff barriers.

Q-5: Write down the name of statistical publications in Bangladesh and briefly
explain.

There are 7 statistical publications in Bangladesh. They are:

Agricultural Statistics: Agricultural Statistics is an annual publication with data on agricultural

production, value, storage, trade and much more.

Price Statistics: A price relative is the ratio of the price of a specific product in one period to the
price of the same product in some other period.

Financial Statistics: Financial statistics include all numerical data that summarizes past behavior
or forecasts future behavior of an individual financial security, a group of securities, or markets
in a broad geographic region. It is useful to first categorize these statistics into one of three
areas.

Global or national statistics examine the behavior of business or economic conditions that
influence the value of securities in general. Market or industrial statistics track the activity of a
specific set of securities linked by a common trading market or industry classification.
Company-specific statistics examine performance of individual firms.

Population and Vital Statistics: One important area where data collection is essential is human
population. Its data collection procedure is usually by direct enumeration carried out for every
individual in the territory at approximately the same time. Collecting data on human population
is, therefore, a complex series of related activities. There is no gainsaying the fact that accurate
population statistics is vital to sound development planning and economic management. This
explains the seriousness attached to the assemblage of population and vital statistics in the
country today.

Apart from the information on the stock of country’s population, it is essential to know the
rate at which the population is changing, structurally and in the aggregate. Vital statistics as

6
computable from registration of important events (especially births and deaths), constitute an
important set of data for studying the dynamics of a country’s population.

Trade Statistics: Trade Statistics Database is designed with the purpose of providing the latest
international merchandise and commercial services trade data and overview of country and
region's imports and exports, tariff and non-tariff measures. Bangladesh trade statistics includes
Exports, Imports, Products, Tariffs, GDP and related Development Indicator.

Industrial and Labor Statistics: The Current Employment Statistics survey is a monthly survey

of the payroll records of business establishments that provides data on employment, hours,
and earnings at national, state and selected local levels .

Educational and Social Statistics: Different information of education like numbers of students
numbers of teachers, percentage of education etc. are called educational statistics. Bangladesh
Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics is the only government agency responsible for
the collection and dissemination of statistics and information in Bangladesh.

Q-6: Discuss the qualities and limitations of published statistics in Bangladesh

Qualities of Published Statistics:

 All the statistical data collect for the regular activities of the publisher.

 Most of the statistical data are collected from the government source.

 Private organization’ statistical data are based on the government statistical data.

 Though most of the statistical data are collected by the government organizations,
the Bangladesh official statistical data is not enough dependable & adequate.

Limitations of published statistics:

Fault in data collection systems: When data are collected by unskilled worker, they collect data
in a wrong way. And also in absence of scientific method as well as the causes of laziness and
corruption data are collected in faulty.

Lack of dependable data: Bureau of Statistics, research center and universities trained workers
collected data are more reliable and dependable. Different government organization in their
day to day work which statistics collected by them are less reliable. For example : agriculture,
health, trade departmental published data are less reliable .
7
Lack of proper training: Many government organizations to collect primary data they appointed
unskilled and untrained workers. Without taking any training they collect data which are not
accurate. For example: Data of survey of census.

Lack of modern technology of statistics: To analysis the collected raw data, data must be
presented in class, frequent, chart. IN modern age this work is done by the modern technology
like computer. But in Bangladesh most of the organization is still don’t use this technology.

lack of enough data: Most often statistics is not used in research. So that statistics data’s
perimeters and application is limited. In this data are not stay enough.

Wrong presentation of data: Most of the time in Bangladesh published statistics are not
fulfilled. The technique, perimeter, objective of collecting data are not specified here. So that to
justify of the quality and reliability of statistics is being hard.

Lack of adjustment in data collection and presentation: For lack of adjustment in organization
which collected data are published in same. So that there happen waste of time, work and
assets. For mistaking in presenting data this data are lost their reliability.

Late in publishing report: If late in collecting, processing and composing data there also late in
publishing data so that the data loss their effectiveness.

Q-7: Give some suggestions for removal of limitations of published statistics in

Bangladesh.

Here some suggestions are given below:

 With the help of skilled and trained statistician survey work should be held.

 To collect data scientific method and update method should be used.

 With the help of skilled statisticians data must be collected, presented and
analyzed in proper sampling way.

 Before the collection of data, data collector should be trained properly.

 To develop in presenting data in our country, necessary amount of statistical

research and update machinery should be imported.

8
 Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) the main source of official STATISTICS in
Bangladesh. So that this organization must be made powerful by using skilled,
trained people and update machinery. in publishing data so that the data loss
their effectiveness in Bangladesh.
