Question: 1) What are the sources of published statistics in Bangladesh?


Explain.
Bangladesh published statistics are divided into three classes on the basis of collected source:
I. Official Statistics
II. Semi-official Statistics
III. Non official Statistics

 Official Statistics:
The statistics collected, complied, and published by different government agencies or
ministries, is called official statistics. This ministries publishes bulletins by collecting
information’s from different sources like: agriculture, food, education, health, industry, and
census. Statistical information is both primary and secondary in the official statistics. This
statistics are usually collected for the need of different government departments and the
public. For example: Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

 Semi-official Statistics:
The statistics collected, complied, and published by different autonomous or semi
government institutions is called semi-official statistics. In this statistics relevant data are
collected for the needs of the organizations activities. In this statistics, Statistical information
are also both primary and secondary type. For example: Final report published by Bangladesh
Rice Research Institute (BRRI).

 Non official Statistics:


The statistics collected, complied, and published by different non-government institutions
like: Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), NGOs, Merchant Association, Stock Exchange,
different Banks or Insurance Company, International association (UNESCO, UNISEF, WHO,
WB, ILO) or other research institutions is called non official statistics. For example: health
related different statistics published by ICDDRB.

Question: 2) What are the Sources of Official Statistics in Bangladesh?


Explain.
The sources of official statistics in Bangladesh are given below:
 Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics:
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BSS) is the main source of Bangladesh official Statistics. It
was established in on August 1974 and the department of statistics was established on July
1975. The main objective of this Bureau’s is to collect, complied and coordination for
publishing the country’s census, agriculture statistics, statistical related information.

 Agricultural Ministries:
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics- agriculture department belongs to agriculture ministry’s
collects, complies, and publishes agriculture related overall information’s. Besides
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), Bangladesh Agriculture
Research Council (BARC), also collect, complied and published statistical information.

 Agriculture Statistics Bureau:


Agriculture statistics bureau collects and manage information related to agriculture, except
the price of agricultural product. It publishes particulars about weather and food related
information thrice in a month. Besides, this bureau publishes annual report. Probable
agriculture products production of Bangladesh and the number of cultivable land are included
in this annual report.

 Ministry of Commerce:
This ministry has a statistical cell for collecting information about national and international
trade. Besides, Bangladesh Export Development Bureau (BEDB), Bangladesh Trading
Corporation (BTC), National Tea Board, Insurance Company, Jute Board collect, compile
and publish their own information’s.

 Ministry of Communication:
Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), Bangladesh Railway Board, Bangladesh
Shipping Corporation (BSC), Bangladesh Post Office, T&T office belongs to the ministry of
communication collect, compile and publish information.

 Ministry of Defense:
Weather department, Bangladesh Tourist department belongs to ministry of defense collect
and revealed report about Bangladesh aircraft (rainfall and climate) related, Bangladesh
tourist industry related and aircraft good transport related information.
 Ministry of Education:
Ministry of Education originally collects information about education, sports & culture and
information & technology related information. This ministry established an organization
named Bangladesh Educational Information and Statistical Bureau (Ban base) in 1977. This
organization’s main work is to collect, store, analyses, and reveled information from primary
level to maximal level.

There are also other sources of official statistics:

 Ministry of Health.

 Ministry of Industry.

 Ministry of Labor and Manpower.

 Ministry of Local Government, rural Development and Cooperatives.

 Ministry of Finance and Planning.

 Home Ministry.

 Bangladesh Bank.

 Agriculture Marketing Directorate.

Question: 3) What are the sources of semi government/official statistics in


Bangladesh? Explain.
There are many institutions involved in collecting information about statistics in Bangladesh.
This institutions are also published statistical data daily, weekly, monthly, annually. Of these
there are some semi government/official sources of statistics in Bangladesh. These sources
are discussed below:
 Civil Aviation Ministry:
This office publishes information annually, semi-annually, or quarterly. In all these reports,
information about the number of external passengers, the amount of total solvency exported,
total income expenditure etc. is collected.

 Universities:
In the annual report of autonomous and private universities, statistical data were published in
their various sectors including income-expenditure, number of students, statistics of their
salary and result, teachers-employee numbers and their salaries.

 Autonomous Research Institute:


Different types of autonomous research institutions in Bangladesh publish a number of
statistical data and reports in their annual report and research. Such as:
• BRRI:
The full meaning of BRRI is Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Bangladesh Rice Research
Institute is an agriculture research institute in Bangladesh, located in Gazipur. It is one of the
demanded driven research centers of Bangladesh. Is was established in 1 October 1970
named East Pakistan Rice Research Institute (PRRI) at Gazipur and named as Bangladesh
Rice Research Institute (BRRI) after the independence of Bangladesh.
This semiofficial institution is one of the main sources of semi government/official statistics
in Bangladesh. This institution publishes final statistical report about different parts of its
main objects.
• BJRI:
The full meaning of BJRI is Bangladesh Jute Research Institute. Bangladesh Jute Research
Institute is the oldest mono crop research institute in Bangladesh, operated by Bangladesh
government. This institution publishes its annual statistical report about different parts of its
main object.
• BIDS:
The full meaning of BIDS is Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies. The Bangladesh
Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) is an autonomous multi-disciplinary public research
organization that conducts policy research on development issues for Bangladesh. Supported
by the Government of Bangladesh, BIDS functions as a think tank, helping formulate socio-
economic policies. The institute conducts research and promotes study and education in
development economics, rural development, demographics and social sciences.
This autonomous institution also publishes statistical information.
Question: 4) What are the source of non-official statistics in Bangladesh?
Explain.
There are many institutions involved in collecting information about statistics in Bangladesh.
This institutions are also published statistical data daily, weekly, monthly, annually. Of these
there are some non-official sources of statistics in Bangladesh. These sources are discussed
below:

 NGOs:
The government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has established Bangladesh NGO
foundation to support the NGOs, with a view to associate the non-government organizations
in the process of achieving Millennium Development Goal (MDG). The foundation was
established through a resolution of the government on 02 December 2004 that was published
in the Bangladesh Gazette on 11 December 2004.

This foundation is one of the main sources of non-official statistics in Bangladesh. This
foundation publishes statistical data about various sector.

 Merchant Associations:
Merchant associations of Bangladesh are another sources of non-official statistics in
Bangladesh. This associations collect, compile, and publishes their important information,
which is a part of Bangladesh non-official statistics.

 Stock Exchange:
In Bangladesh there are two stock exchange. They are:
I. Dhaka Stock Exchange.
ii. Chittagong Stock Exchange.

These stack exchanges are the sources of non-official statistics in Bangladesh.


These stock exchanges collect, compile and publishes information/ statistical data.

 Private Banks:
There are many non-government or private banks publishes their statistical data in
Bangladesh. This private banks are also a source of non-official statistics in Bangladesh.
Such banks publishes their statistical reports annually.
 Insurance Company:
Statistical data published by non-government insurance companies are also a source of non-
official statistics in Bangladesh. This companies collect, compile, and publishes their data for
their need.

 International Associations:
International associations such as:
i. UNESCO
ii. UNISEF
iii. WHO
iv. WB
v. ILO, are the sources of non-official statistics in Bangladesh. This foreign associations
published their statistical data for Bangladesh.

 Other Institutions:
Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and other research institute in Bangladesh also collect,
compile and publishes statistical data. They are also a sources of non-official statistics in
Bangladesh.

Question: 5) Write down the names of statistical publications in


Bangladesh and briefly explain.
Names of statistical publications in Bangladesh are given below:

 Monthly statistical bulletin, Bangladesh.


 Statistical year book of Bangladesh.
 Statistical pocket book of Bangladesh.
 Year book of agricultural statistics of Bangladesh.
 Foreign trade statistics of Bangladesh (FTS).
 National volume of population census.
 Bangladesh economic survey.
 Bangladesh health and demographic survey.
 Bangladesh Bank bulletin.
 Statistics on civil employees in Bangladesh government.
Bangladesh is a country whom there are many statistical publications publishes their regular
or important statistical data. Sometimes these publications publishes annual report for their
statistical situation. On the other hand, there are also some administration in Bangladesh
publishing their yearly statistical books, such as: Statistical year book of Bangladesh,
statistical pocket book of Bangladesh, year book of agriculture statistics in Bangladesh, etc.
Bangladesh health and demographic survey also publishes health related statistical data in
Bangladesh. Bangladesh Bank reveals bulletin on: Economy, inflation, exchange rate etc.
related data.

Question: 6) Discuss the limitations and qualities of published statistics in


Bangladesh.
The limitations or disadvantages of published statistics in Bangladesh are given below:

 Lack of Accurate Information:


The information collected and analyzed in the collection of data collected in the statistics of
Bangladesh is lacking in confidence and trustworthiness.

 Replication of Data Collection:


In Bangladesh there is lack of confidence and trustworthiness of statistical data analyze and
collection.

 Limitation of Information in workplace:


The statistical institutions of Bangladesh collect information only for their own needs. As a
result, its work area is limited.

 Incomplete Information:
The statistical institutions of Bangladesh collects information at their own way that’s why
sometimes there is an incompleteness of information.

 Lack of Scientific Method:


In most cases, scientific methods con not be used to collect information.

 Incomplete Presentation of Information:


In most of the statistics, their presentation remains incomplete due to lack of information
about the purpose, significance, and search field and compilation method.

 Delay in Publishing:
In most cases, there is unauthorized delays in publication of collected information.
There are some qualities of published statistics in Bangladesh. To increase these qualities
some proposals must be needed. These are given below:

 Collecting, presenting and analyzing data with the help of skilled, experienced and
trained statisticians.

 Collect and analyzed data with scientific methods.

 For the repetition of data collection, a separate scientific institution should be


established for collecting information.

 The artistic value of the publications will be greatly increased by using the latest
printing equipment in the statistics published in Bangladesh.

 Coordinate the information collected by the various institutions.

 Determine the information unit of data collection by determining accuracy level and
making the right questionnaire.

 In order to test the validity of the statistical procedures, it is necessary to set up a large
number of institutes and research organizations in the country.

 The steps needed to be taken to solve the delayed data analysis and reports are to be
taken.

 Before collection of data, the collector should be given appropriate training on the
contents of the information collected.
Question: 7) Give some suggestions for removal of limitations of the
published statistics in Bangladesh.
The following steps can be taken to eliminate the extent and the extent of the statistics
published in Bangladesh:

 Besides establishment of government institutions as well as foundation instructions


will needed to be developed for the collection and publication of statistics or
information.

 Statistical publications should be arranged regularly and at the appropriate time.

 Actions will be taken to remove the inefficiency of institutions data collection


process.

 Coordination measures should be taken between the various agencies serving


statistics.

 To conduct research on data gathering, more research center will be needed for the
country.

 People’s attitudes should be changed to the use of statistics or information.

 Apply scientific methods to collect and analyze information.

 To increase the reliability of the collected information, there will be a need to increase
the efficiency of statistical institutions data collection process.

 More information will be developed to collect information properly.
