1. Read the poem. Does this poem have a rhyme scheme? If so, what is it? (1 sentence)

2. In what ways did you connect to the poem? (3-5 sentences)
I connect to this p[oem because some times my parents take their anger out on me or my
siblings. I sometimes also forgive my parents for yelling at us.

3. The author writes, “She said my room was a pigsty.” What kind of figurative language is
this? What does it mean? (1-2 sentences)
It is a metaphor because it is comparing two things together.
4. What does “...bawled me out.” in the first verse mean? If you’re unsure, use context
clues to figure it out. (1-2 sentences)
She called them out for stuff that they do.
5. How do you think the narrator feels after her mom tells her that her dad did something to
hurt her mom? How do you know how she feels? How would you feel if your parent told
you something that maybe a child shouldn’t hear? (3-5 sentences)
They might be sad. They might feel sad and relived to ave let it out(HER SADNESS NOT HER
ANGER). Id feel different emotes depending on what they say.
6. Think about a time when you didn’t know what to do with the way someone was feeling.
Why didn’t you know? What did you end up doing? Do you wish you could have done
things differently? (3-5 sentences)
Because i was tired and couldent work properly. In didnt think and Said no. wished that vi could
go back and say yess
7. We often learn how to be parents later in life because of how our parents raised us.
What kind of parent do you think the narrator might be when she grows up? Why do you

One that would try to be nice to her kid. They might also tell them everything
8. Read through the poem again, pretending you’re the mom. How did the poem feel
different to you? (1-3 sentences)
They might have felt sed for doing that to her kid.
9. It’s true that we can never truly know or completely understand someone else. But the
effort of trying to understand people is called empathy. Now that you have read the poem
twice, which person can you empathize with more? The mom, who had a really rough
day and took her stress out on her child in a moment of weakness but later apologized,
or the kid who was yelled at and called names and then had to have an adult
conversation that she probably didn’t want to have? Why do you empathize with this
person? (3-5 sentences)
The kid because we know a lot more about her. And because they need someone to
talk to about this
10. Explain what you think these lines mean, “I yell at her often, ‘You don’t understand me!’/
But I don’t want to have to understand her./ That’s expecting too much.” (4-6 sentences)
It could mean that they want the parent to understand them. They want the parent to leave them
alone. The parent doesn't know what they need. The kid is mad because the parent wont leave
them alone.
