Chapter 1
Introduction
The AM series of remote asset management (RAM) devices are used
for the remote monitoring and management of off‐road and on‐road
equipment and vehicles.
The Topcon Tierra asset management system utilizes remote
communication devices to provide a centralized information service
on virtually every aspect of the jobsite. The AM series of RAM
devices have powerful on‐board processors that allow high logging
capability of all parameters. CAN Bus line acquisition is also possible.

Installation
The following section describes installing the AM series device,
components, and cables onto your machine or vehicle.
NEVER cover the vent hole in the bottom of the AM
WARNING
series device with tape or Velcro (Figure 2‐1 on
page 2‐2). Covering the vent hole may cause device
failure, as the vent hole releases humidity caused
by temperature changes.

For AM series specifications, i.e., technical data and
NOTICE envelope dimensions, see Appendix A.
If the device is not properly installed, any motion
NOTICE detected by the internal accelerometer will have a
negative impact. False readings will occur unless
the device is firmly in place.
Direct pressure washing of the AM series is not
recommended and may void the warranty.
DO NOT ALLOW the AM series or the components
WARNING
of the telematic system to BLOCK or LIMIT your
view outside the cab.
Use goggles when drilling, cutting, or grinding on
the machine.

The wiring schematics are noted as
NOTICE recommendations by Tierra, please consult your
equipment manufacturers operation manuals for
specific information pertaining to wiring or use of
the equipment’s battery as a power source.
Before welding steel parts on the frame, disconnect
WARNING the AM Series device as hardware issues may occur.
The switched power wire (orange) should be
WARNING
connected to a source that is only energized during
the engine run cycle.
DO NOT CONNECT RED AND ORANGE WIRES
TOGETHER.
If red and orange wires are connected to the same
signal source, the Key OFF event is not detected or
reported and the device firmware will not function
properly. This connection can be sourced at the
output run terminal of your vehicle’s alternator or
other sources that are only “hot” when the engine
is running (mechanical hour meter, etc.). Use a
multimeter to verify that 9 to 36 volts are present
only when the engine is ON. For both switched
power (orange) and constant power (red), the
voltage range is the same.
Wiring a piece of heavy equipment up without
CAUTION using the above‐mentioned method causes
problems with inaccurate hours being reported
into Tierra web. These hours will not match the
hour meter on the machine, thereby causing
erroneous readings due to the presence of a
switched power signal when the engine is not
running. This could occur if wired to the ignition
when the key switch is left ON. Due to the inability
to detect Key OFF, connecting red and orange to
the same signal source is never acceptable. IN ALL
CASES, switched power wired to an engine run
signal is the first and best practice.
Some vehicles, such as tractors or agricultural
NOTICE machines, have 3‐pin connectors with ground,
battery power, and switched power located inside
the cabin. You can use this connector to power an
AM series device (see “AM Series Power/Serial
Cable Installation” on page 2‐8 for power
requirements). Both constant power and switched
power need to be fuse‐protected (5A fuse works
fine). Install a 5A fuse onto the battery power cable
and another fuse onto the switched power cable if
the circuit is not protected.
Use Ty‐wraps to keep hoses and wires secured to
NOTICE
avoid possible wear or pinch points.
Both switched power AND constant power MUST
NOTICE
BE used to properly power up the box.
Locate the ground wire to the chassis to prevent
NOTICE any problems with a master disconnect switch
eliminating the constant power feed.
DO NOT cut the CAN cable on the vehicle. Please
WARNING use the proper connectors only.
We recommend using soldered connections with
TIP shrink tube for best results.

wave greater than 100Hz.
The AM53 has power from 9 to 36 Volt (pin 1 and
pin 12), turns on by ignition input (key) with a 7,5 ±
0,5 V, and turns off with a 2,1 ± 0,5 V.
