Introduction

1. INTRODUCTION
NOTE:
* The present manual is updated for the product it is sold with in order to
grant an adequate reference in performing diagnostics and repair
operations normally carried out by the service engineer.
The manual may not reflect changes to the product not impacting
servicing and performance specifications.

1.1 Overview
The new Potter-Bucky SD is the natural evolution of the very popular
Villa Sistemi Medicali Potter Bucky.
The applications of this product are in standard, floating and tilting X-ray
tables, as well as chest stands and “C” shaped column units.
The standard configuration comes with a universal measuring chamber
installation kit that accepts the most popular devices (Comet, Ziehm,
Expos-Aid), a standard cassette tray for size up to 35x43 cm, a standard
set of covers for the electrical parts, 120Vac or 230Vac power supply and
selectable Bucky call and Bucky reply signals (24Vdc, 120Vac, 230Vac).
The Potter-Bucky SD is also designed to accept a Sensing Cassette Tray
manufactured by Poersch and Liebel.

1.2 Scope of the manual


This manual is aimed at supplying the service engineer instructions to
obtain a safe functionality of the unit and effective operation of the
device.
The device must be operated according to the procedures described in
the manual and only for its intended use.
The Potter-Bucky SD is a medical device and as such it can be used only
under the supervision of a medical doctor or trained specialists, having
the necessary understanding of X-ray radiation protection.
The user is responsible to implement requested legal actions for a proper
installation and operation of the device.

2. SAFETY ASPECTS

WARNING:
, Content of this chapter must be carefully read and implemented to
prevent damages to the devices and injures to people.

2.1 Warnings
The Manufacturer designs and builds its devices to meet safety
requirements and supplies all necessary information for their proper use.

The Manufacturer is not responsible for:

• use of the Potter-Bucky SD device different from its intended use


• damages to the device, to the operator or to the patient caused by
wrong installation, by maintenance operations carried out without
following the procedures described in this manual or by wrong
operation techniques
• mechanical or electrical changes implemented after installation and not
explicitly authorized by the Manufacturer.

Exclusively Authorized technical engineers from the Manufacturer are


allowed to service the device.

Authorized technical engineers only can remove the covers of the electrical
components and of the device gaining access to parts under voltage.

The device has NOT been designed to operate in the presence of vapor,
anesthetic gas mixtures, oxygen and nitrogen protoxide.

Prevent water or other liquids spillage inside the device to avoid short
circuits or corrosion.

Always disconnect the device from mains before cleaning it.

Even though the Potter-Bucky SD has been designed with a high level of
protection to electromagnetic fields, it should be connected to equipment
or instruments that are compliant with EMC standards. Non compliant
instruments, known for their sensitivity to EM fields must be installed at a
distance of at least 3 m from the Potter-Bucky SD and must be powered
by a dedicated line.

The Potter-Bucky SD cannot be installed in surgery rooms.

The Potter-Bucky SD must be turned off while electrosurgery cutter or


similar equipment is in use.

All power supply input wires must be tightened rigidly in groups of at


least three wires at a distance not greater than 3 cm from their connectors.

2.2 Environment and disposal risks

Some parts of the Potter-Bucky SD contain materials which have to be


disposed of in a controlled way at the end of useful life.
More specifically the device contains:
• lead, iron, copper, non biodegradable plastic, PCB supporting
material.

Disposable of the device at the end of its life and the cost of this
operation cannot be charged to Villa Sistemi Medicali.

5. ACCESSORIES AND COMPATIBLE


COMPONENTS
The Potter-Bucky SD is part of a radiological system which incorporates
a number of different accessories.
For the purposes of their mechanical and/or electrical interconnection,
the compatibility constraints of the various accessories must be known.

The compatibility requirements for the Potter-Bucky SD are set out


below:

The compatible components are described in the following paragraphs.

5.1 Generator

The Potter-Bucky SD can be connected with all generators equipped


with 3 or 4 wires Potter connection.
The standard configuration of the Potter Bucky SD are 24 Vdc for the
Bucky X-ray request (Power SD Input) and Bucky Start (Potter SD
output).
Different voltage setting are possible; according to the jumpers position
on the Potter SD board 120Vac and 230Vac “Bucky request” is available.
See paragraph 7.1.3 for further information.

5.2 Grids

The Potter- Bucky SD is prepared to accept grid with the following


characteristics:
• width (patient right-left dimension) 480 mm
• height (patient up-down dimension) 438 mm
• thickness from 2 to 5 mm
• lines orientation parallel to 438 mm side
Also take into account the focus-film distance between X-ray source
assembly and Potter-Bucky SD.
This parameter must be taken into account in order to choose a grid with
adequate focusing values for this range.
The standard configurations of the Potter-Bucky SD comes with one of
the following grids:

5.3 A.E.C.

The Potter-Bucky SD is prepared to accept measuring chambers with


maximum dimension as follow:

The standard configurations of the Potter-Bucky SD comes with one of

5.4 Sensing cassette tray

The Potter-Bucky SD is ready to accept sensing cassette tray from


Poersch and Liebel.

6. PRE-INSTALLATION

6.1 Electrical setup

WARNING:
, The prescriptions of this chapter must be followed carefully to grant
proper installation, meeting the safety requirements.

The device shall be directly connected to a secondary line from the X-ray
generator operating with the system or to the equipment where it is
connected.
In all cases, the section of the three wires must be larger than 0.75 mm² .
The protection ground must be connected to the bolt located on the side
of the terminal block.
• Connection to the generator:
Check the manual of the generator to make sure that connecting
points meets the load and insulation requirements of the
Potter-Bucky SD.

General grounding must be compliant with regulations of the country of


installation. Improper grounding may generate dangers for the safety of
the user or an incorrect operation of the electronic circuits in the
Potter-Bucky SD.

7. INSTALLATION

7.1 Electrical interface

This device has been designed and built according to International safety
Standards (EN 60601-1).
To guarantee the proper safety level for patients and operators, the
equipment in which this device will be installed, must also comply to
such standard.

For electrical interface, please refer to the attached drawings.

All electrical connections are available on X1 terminal block placed on


the rear side of the unit.
In the following, all terminal numbers, if not otherwise stated, are always
referred to X1 terminal block.

7.1.1 Power supply

Power supply selectable between 120Vac or 230Vac, must be connected


to terminal X1 on the pins as indicated in the following table:

NOTE:
* Label indicating the mains connection is present near the terminal X1.

Protective earth must always be connected to the ground screw at the


right side of X1.

7.1.2 Generators connections

The Potter-Bucky SD is "4 WIRES" type, but can be converted to a


"3 WIRES" type by jumping 2 terminals, depending on the generator
characteristics.
The Potter-Bucky SD can be connected to all X-ray generators which are
electrically compatible with the I/O signals (input/output) on general
terminal board X1 of the Potter-Bucky SD.
The standard configurations of the Potter-Bucky SD are 24Vdc for the
Bucky X-ray request (Potter SD Input) and Bucky Start (Potter SD
output).
Different voltages setting for the Bucky X-ray request (Bucky start) are
possible according to the jumpers position on the Potter Bucky control
PCB. See paragraph 7.1.3 for further information.

7.1.3 Bucky start voltage setting (Bucky call)

The Bucky control PCB is designed in order to accept three different


Bucky start voltages depending on the generator connected. These
voltages must be connected to the X1 general terminal board, to pins
6 (+) and 7 (-).
The voltages allowed are: 24Vdc, 120Vac and 230Vac.
The voltage selection is made by jumpers present on Potter-Bucky board
and reference is listed below:

NOTE:
* In case the voltage selected is 24Vdc the positive must be connected to
pin 6 and negative to pin 7.

7.1.4 Bucky reply

The “Bucky reply” signal is generated by the Bucky itself and informs the
generator that the grid is moving.

This signal is simply a Normally Open relay free-contact.


The signal is available at terminals 11-12.

7.1.5 Bucky brake button predisposition

If required, a push-button can be installed in the hole situated on left


frontal side of the Bucky frame. This push-button can be used to activate
the brake for keeping the Bucky in position, for instance in Bucky tables.

The push-button shall be connected to terminals 8-9 of terminal block


X2, inside the Bucky.
The push-button contact is then available at terminals 9-10 of the
external terminal block X1 for connection to the brake.
The maximum ratings for the push-button connections are: 24Vdc, 2A.

7.1.6 Fuses

The following fuses with the respective ratings and protected circuit are
present on the unit.

7.2 Mechanical interface

For mechanical interface, please refer to the attached drawings


(chapter 11).
We assume that the identification of the 4 sides of the frame is the
following:
• Rear: the side that carries the electrical connections
• Front: opposite to rear side
• Left: the one identified with the letter “S” on drawing #5
• Right: the one identified with the letter “D” on drawing #5.

7.2.1 Mounting holes

The unit can be mounted using several holes on different sides (see
chapter 11, drawing #5).
The mounting holes are the following:
• 3+3 threaded holes M5x10 mm on front side
• 4+4 threaded holes M5x10 mm on rear side
• 7 threaded holes M5x10 mm on left side
• 7 threaded holes M5x10 mm on right side
• 4 holes ø 10 mm on the bottom plate.

7.2.2 Protruding parts

When designing your mechanical interface, please take into account the
following parts that are protruding from the frame (see chapter 11,
drawing #5):
• Rear side: terminal block with cover and screws, fuse-holders,
ground screw.
• Bottom plate: motor fixing screws (2 pcs.).

7.2.3 Cassette tray

The cassette tray is provided with stoppers that prevent, in normal


operating conditions, the cassette tray to be removed from the Bucky.
However, for maintenance it is possible to completely remove the tray, by
acting as follows:
1. Extract the cassette tray until it stops.
2. Press the two levers that are located under the tray, in its posterior
side.
3. Extract the tray from the Bucky.
The cassette tray loading can be changed from left to right, by changing
the position of items 1S, 2S, 3S, 4S to 1D, 2D, 3D, 4D respectively (see
chapter 11, drawing #5).

7.2.4 Measuring chamber installation

NOTE:
* These instruction are valid for Comet, Ziehm and Expos-Aid AECs.
Default AEC installed in Villa is Gilardoni Dosemat. In case Dosemat
AEC is applied later, instructions are supplied in the Dosemat kit
P/N 8768961040.

Please make reference to chapter 11, drawing #6, when reading the
procedure here after provided.
1. Remove the cassette tray.
2. To give more rigidity to the measuring chamber (Comet/Ziehm), a “U”
shaped metal profile is included (item A). The profile shall be
mounted on the measuring chamber, on the side of the cable.
3. Loosen the nuts (item D), then unscrew the set screws (item E); this
action will make the insertion of the measuring chamber easier by
enlarging the relevant path.
4. Insert the measuring chamber (item B) by sliding it inside the Bucky
until it is fully inserted. In doing this, make sure the measuring
chamber is fully inserted inside the two “U” shaped brackets (item C)
in the rear part of the frame.
5. Make sure that the measuring chamber has the correct orientation
(for this, refer to the measuring chamber’s instructions).
6. Fix the measuring chamber by tightening the screws E and locking
them by means of the nuts D.
7. Make sure that the measuring chamber’s cable does not interfere
with the cassette tray movement.
8. The Bucky guide is equipped with a hole trough the AEC cable can be
inserted. A strip can be fixed using relevant hole to block the cable. A
second hole, behind the transformer can be used to goes out from the
Bucky with the AEC cable.

7.2.5 Grid installation

Please make reference to chapter 11, drawings #5 and #6, when reading
the procedure here after provided.
1. Loosen the 4 fixing screws (item F) of the metal plates (item G).
2. Insert the grid by sliding it inside its frame. In doing this, make sure
the grid is fully inserted in the rear slot (metal plates, item G) of the
frame.
3. Make sure that the grid has the correct orientation (central line or
X-ray symbol must be upwards).
4. Lock the grid to the frame by tightening the fixing screws (item F)
previously loosened.

7.2.6 Sensing Cassettes Tray installation

The standard Bucky cassettes tray is auto centering in transversal way.


To maintain the cassette in vertical position a magnetic support block is
used.

The Bucky is also predisposed to accept sensing cassettes tray


manufactured by POERSCH and LIEBEL. To adapt the Bucky to use this
kind of cassettes tray it is necessary to use the sensing tray kit
p/n 7120520500 following the instruction given below:

1. Remove and discard the screws and relevant washers "A" (Figure 3)
mounted on frontal lower part of the Bucky. Replace with the
washers and the TS M4x5 screws provided in the sensing tray kit.
These screws will work as stopping device.

2. Fix the electrical components plate (see Figure 4 and Figure 5) on left
or right Bucky rear side, according to the cassettes tray insertion side
(left or right).
3. The electrical components plate is predisposed to fix the three parts
necessary to complete the installation:
• lateral sensing closing device "A" (Figure 4 and Figure 5)
• shifting connector "B" (Figure 4 and Figure 5)
• general signals connector "C" (Figure 4 and Figure 5).
The double holes for cable routing and fixing of items "A" and "B"
(Figure 4 and Figure 5) are pre-set in order to accept the proper
accessories according to the cassette tray used.
4. To connect the sensing cassettes tray, use the shifting connector "B"
and solder relevant wires consulting the SD wiring diagram.
5. Two plastic adapters are supplied with the sensing cassette tray kit
to optimize the cassettes sensing tray installation into the Bucky.
Stick them on the lateral side of the tray to reduce the clearance
present between tray and Bucky guide.

INFORMATION

8.1 Cassette centring with X-ray beam

Depending by the application of the Potter-Bucky “SD”, the X-ray beam


must be centered on the cassette before to perform an exposition.
Normally this action can be obtained using the light beam projected by
the collimator.
A general example is showed below.

8.2 Cassette Loading and Unloading

To load a cassette in the Potter - Bucky, operate as follows:


1. Slide out the cassette tray by the handle in front of it.
2. Unlock the jaws by rotating the knob counter clockwise.
3. Pull open the jaws.
4. Put the cassette in the tray and centre it left to right using the mid
reference line on cassette (1) and for vertical projections by putting

5. Push the jaws as indicate by arrows (2) to lock the cassette.
6. Lock the jaws by turning the knob clockwise as indicated by arrow
(3).
7. Unlock the Bucky brakes if present in the final application by acting
on the relevant switch present on the Bucky itself and move the
Bucky to the desired position.

9. CLEANING AND DISINFECTION


In order to assure proper cleaning and hygiene, carefully follow the
instructions here after provided.

WARNING:

Do not allow liquids and water to enter inside the unit, to prevent
from short circuits and corrosion of inner parts.

Clean the cassettes tray surfaces


using only a damp cloth and
neutral detergents. Take care to dry

10. MAINTENANCE

10.1 Operator maintenance

As for all the electrical devices, in addition to proper use this unit also
requires periodical checks and maintenance. This precautions will insure
a safe and efficient performance of the device.

The preventive maintenance consists of checks that can be carried out


directly by the operator as outlined in the following table.

10.2 Maintenance reserved to the authorised technician

The purpose of this paragraph is to provide the service technician with


the instructions for ensuring safe and efficient operation of the
equipment.

In order to maintain intact the characteristics and quality level of


Potter Bucky SD, it is advisable to perform a general preventive
maintenance by a specialized service technician authorized by Villa
Sistemi Medicali.

WARNING:
, Any service operations must be performed exclusively by a specialized
technician authorized by Villa Sistemi Medicali.

The maintenance operations performed by the specialized technician


must be those described below, and must be carried out in the manner
described.
