Name each part of the leaf and explain how it helps the leaf in photosynthesis.
• Layer A
(2)
Upper epidermis:this is a single layer of cells containing few or no chloroplasts. The cells are
quite transparent and permit most of the light that strikes them to pass through to the underlying
cells. The upper surface is covered with a waxy, waterproof cuticle, which serves to reduce water
loss from the leaf. The cuticle and upper epidermis provide protection for the plant. Below that is
the palisade layer, which is the location of photosynthesis within the leaf. Below the palisade
layer is the spongy layer, which contains cells that are more spread out, allowing for air pockets.

Palaside Mesophyll:Palisade cells are found in the mesophyll of a leaf and their main function is
the absorption of light so that photosynthesis can take place. The palisade mesophyll consists of
chloroplasts with chlorophyll that absorb the light energy. The mesophyll layer is made up of the
palisade cell and spongy parts.

The spongy mesophyll's function is to allow for the interchange of gases (CO2) that are needed
for photosynthesis.

Stomata:The two main functions of stomata are to allow for the uptake of carbon dioxide and to
limit the loss of water due to evaporation. In many plants, stomata remain open during the day
and closed at night. Stomata are open during the day because this is when photosynthesis
typically occurs.

• Suggest how the upper surface of the land plant would differ from this diagram.
(1)
It wouldn't have the stomatas which are the little circles in the diagram.
