SAME LOVE ANYALASIS

Usually, songs get the message across by effectively using language features, auditory devices, and song
structure. The song ‘Same Love’ by Mackelmore was written in 2012, and in the same year, the USA
decided to legalise same-sex marriage, in certain states. The song ‘Same Love’ by Mackelmore, effectively
demonstrates the equalisation of the LGBTQIA+ community, and how people of the community shouldn’t
be discriminated. ‘Same Love’ was written in Seattle, Washington. In 2012, same- sex marriage was
legalised in some states of the USA and Mexico, which was a huge milestone for the American LGBTQIA+
population. This essay will be discussing the language features, song structure, and the auditory elements.

The author skilfully uses song structure to support the message of same-sex marriage, and LGBTQIA+ equality.
For example, the chorus provides a range of examples to help advocate for the equality of the LGBTQIA+
community. To begin with, the verse “And I can’t change even if I tried” tells people about how sexuality isn’t a
choice, and how people still need the rights to get married to the same sex. Furthermore, in the bridge of the
song, the lyrics are quite meaningful and add to the message of LGBTQIA+ equality. The lyrics, “Plagued by a
pain in their heart, a world so hateful, some would rather die than be who they are,” contributes immensely to
the key message of the song. This verse impacts the audience exceptionally as the lyrics are referencing that
the LGBTQIA+ youth are more prone to suicide, than the cisgender and heterosexual youth are. Through the
implementation of these structures, the songwriter supports their important message by using effective song
structure, to help evoke a certain emotion from the listeners.

The author uses language features to powerfully communicate advocacy for same-sex marriage equality. For
example, there is a metaphor, “plagued with a pain in their hearts.” This metaphor contributes immensely to
the key message of the song, as it tells people, that individuals hate who they are, because of stereotypes of
the LGBTQIA+ community. This example communicates how hateful this world is, and if anything is apart from
the norms of society, it is deemed different, and abnormal. This has caused many people in the LGBTQIA+
community to commit suicide, because of lack of support from their family, friends, or peers. These harmful
stereotypes, stigmas and discrimination is causing many young individuals to lose their lives. This song helps
bring attention to the injustices brought upon the LGBTQIA+ individuals of the time. Furthermore, the
rhetorical question, “have you read the Youtube comments lately?” is very powerful for conveying the
message. This example communicates the fact that Youtube comments are spreading hate and using the word
‘gay’ in a derogatory way. It tells people that the stereotypes of the LGBTQIA+ community are being used in a
discriminatory way, and as a result, are making people feel like they don’t belong. By effectively utilising these
language features, the songwriter develops their message of LGBTQIA+ equality and same-sex marriage.

The author effectively uses auditory elements to powerfully communicate the intended message of marriage
equality, and LGBTQIA+ equality. Same Love’s verse was mezzo forte, and it was a comfortable dynamic to
listen to. It increases near the chorus (to stand out) and then decreases again, near the verse. It creates a soft,
yet empowering atmosphere for the listener and really helps the listeners advocate for change. The softer
atmosphere is quite motherly, and it gives people a sense of hope, that they can change in the future, for the
better. Same Love’s tempo is a bit fast, and it gives and upbeat rhythm to it. This helps contrast the dark lyrics
with a more light-hearted tempo. A light-hearted tone helps people feel better about the injustices that are
played throughout the song. By utilising these auditory elements, the songwriter develops their effective
message of LGBTQIA+ equality and same-sex marriage equality.

The song ‘Same Love’, by Mackelmore, portrays an effective message of LGBTQIA+ equality, and same-sex
marriage equality to a high extent. The song has effectively delivered its message by using language features,
so ng structure, and auditory elements. The song’s message is still relevant to this day, as LGBTQIA+
community members are still being targeted for discrimination, and inequality. The song, “Same Love,”
successfully presents a positive perspective on LGBTQIA+ equality and same sex marriage using language
features, auditory devices, and song structure.
