“Things We Said Today”

“Things We Said Today” is a song that shows the genuine love that the singer feels for

the woman he is with, and how he will always feel that love even though they are separated for

periods of time. He finds comfort in the words that she tells him, that she will be his until the end

of time and that she will be thinking of him when he is gone. The words he sings to her and the

deep emotions throughout the song make it a great example of what love can be and how it can

form in so many ways. This analysis will consist of how the lyrics show the different languages

and types of love, as well as how the overall song shows the theme of love.

Depending on what you interpret from the lyrics, this song can contain many of the

different types of love. Personally, I am drawn toward pragma. Pragma, committed and long-

lasting love, is shown all throughout the lyrics of this song. The lyrics, “And though we may be

blind, love is here to stay and that's enough” as well as “Someday when we're dreaming, deep in

love, not a lot to say, then we will remember, things we said today” all signify a love that goes

much deeper than the surface. It signifies a love that neither of the people in this relationship

wants to lose. They are committed to each other and want to be together forever.

There are many types of love languages showcased in this song. The most obvious being,

words of affirmation and quality time. The words of affirmation range between what she tells the

singer to make him feel better about leaving, as well as the lyrics in the song that tell her how he
feels. “You say you will love me if I have to go, you’ll be thinking of me, somehow I will know”

and, “you say you'll be mine, girl, ‘til the end of time” are both examples of affirming words she

says to him. Then, “and though we may be blind, love is here to stay and that’s enough” and

“someday, when we're dreaming, deep in love, not a lot to say, then we will remember, things we

said today” are both examples of the words that he expresses to show his love towards her within

the song. The lyrics also portray how they long to be together, physically, and how they want to

share quality time, but just are not able to. For many couples, quality time is something that is so

important and cannot be looked past, so I’m positive that this couple must struggle with not

being able to have the time that they want together.

The lyrics of the song depict a couple, happily in love and wanting to be together forever,

but the tempo and cords of the song seem to send a different message. The song has a saddening

feel to it, slow and with a low pitch. This could indicate being sad to leave his love or it could

have a deeper meaning. At one point the lyrics say “and though we may be blind”, which could

indicate that they could be being blinded by their feelings and can’t see that the distance between

them will probably drive a wedge in their relationship. The instruments and the occasional

harmonizing vocals do bring in more of a romantic feel to the song, but overall it seems to have a

theme of a sort of impending doom more than a love song.

Almost every song from The Beatles can be interpreted in different ways depending on

the person listening to them. There’s no one meaning to a song. This song to me seems like it

may be portraying a relationship in which they both want it to work out, but know that it most

likely cannot. Although may be hard to accept, love can only get you through so much.
