I. Act of Kindness 1 (Aged Vendor of Clam)

I, as the breadwinner, used to go to the market every Sunday. There, I met an old
woman vendor of clams and white maize. I became her “suki” since clams are budget-friendly.
Also, this is one of our favorite viands, because as the saying says, “sabaw palang ulam na.”
But there were days where she has no clams to sell. During those times, I’m still passing
to her marketplace, but I’m not buying anything.  I just bought some bread and apples and gave
those to her. I used to give her food to eat when I don’t have anything to buy from her because
she’s with no one. I was worried about how will she eat or does she has packed food that is
enough for the entire day of her selling.
I feel so happy when I see her smile every Sunday. But when the pandemic happens, I
never saw her again selling in the market since she’s a senior citizen already. These days, I am
thinking about how she’s surviving their everyday life since she is the one who’s working to
finance the needs of her granddaughters.

II. Act of Kindness 2 (Sampaguita Boy)

As I have mentioned, I’m a breadwinner who used to go to the market every Sunday. One
time, I am picking some apples in the fruits section. There was a boy who poked me and say,
“Ma’am bili ka na po, pangkain lang po Ma’am.” When I turned my head towards him, I feel pity
for him. He was wearing an oversized blue shirt. His footwear was bigger than his feet. Having
his dirty wallet bag, he really looks beggarly. He looked like an eight-year-old kid so, I was
thinking, where are his parents. But then, I asked him how much his Sampaguita.
He’s selling the Sampaguita for only 3 for 20 pesos. I bought some even I don’t know where
to use them. Since I’m also at the apple store, I bought one extra apple and gave it to him. He
smiled at me and waved his hands while walking away from me. I feel blessed.

III. Act of Kindness 3 (Return the Excess)

I went to the market yesterday. I saw a health and beauty products store and bought extra
shampoo set as our stock. I bought 12 pieces of Keratin shampoo which costs 58 pesos and
paid 100 pesos. Supposedly, my change would be 42 pesos only, but the vendor gave 46
pesos. I’m confused. So, I asked the vendor how much is the price of shampoo. She said 58. I
showed the change again and said it was too much. Then the vendor found out that the other
coin is five pesos, not one peso. She thanked me while laughing and gave me the exact change
for what I purchased. Joyfully, I left that store happy because I knew I had done the right thing.
Before I go home, I saw the banana store and bought some. I told the seller to keep the one
peso change but she still gave it to me and said, “Pandagdag mo rin ‘yan sa pamasahe.” So, I
took it and thanked.
From here, I realized, I returned the extra four pesos change for the shampoo because
that’s the right thing to do. Now, this banana seller returned the change to me because that's
the humane thing to do. Now I should say that I already received the prize for what I did. Truly,
what you have done good to your neighbor, they will do it to you as well.

IV. Act of Kindness 4 (Take Advantage Your Privilege)

I was one of the numerous students who are praying to have a laptop and internet.
Luckily, I have one. But upon seeing my classmates who haven’t laptops and internet, but still
complying with the requirements, even they’re struggling, I feel more inspired and determined.
That’s why when my classmates have messaged me and asked for a favor, I did that right away
even though I was working. I presented their presentations, converting their files into another
format, submitting their works to this and that drive, sending the files to the group chat, etc.
I was doing these because I am privilege enough to have essential gadgets for online
classes. I may not help them in terms of financial or material things, but at least on this matter, I
could help them to lessen their struggles. Because who else will help and work with us? We are
almost family in the class.

V. Act of Kindness 5 (Stay Good with the Stray Dog)

The heavy rain came down. All the people who were idling outside went inside their
homes. Some were outside with an umbrella. Others bathed in the rain. The surroundings
were already filled with the sound of heavy rain until I hear a knock at the gate. I couldn’t see
who was knocking, but I still approached towards the gate. When I’m at the gate, I saw a
stray dog. Soaking wet dog knocking at the gate.
I felt sorry for the dog so, I immediately opened the door and let him inside. He stayed
here until the rain stopped. He’s a good dog because he did not make any noise or scatter
anything inside. He just sat quietly in a corner while drying himself.
Up to this day, when the rain hits him outside, he’s knocking on the gate and hoping
to be let inside again. Now, whenever he saw me going outside, he’s waiting for me to return,
escorting me until I went inside. I should say that I found a new friend to treasure.

SHORT REFLECTION
Upon doing this activity, I realized that there are lots of reasons to help anyone around.
Regardless of their looks, status in life, personality, or what they are as a whole, still, we need to
help them. And as we help the people in need around us, it will surely come back to us
unexpectedly and surprisingly. As the golden rule says, “Do unto others as you would have
them do unto you.” Even the help we give won’t return to us directly, we must still choose to
help because they may pay it forward to others. When they pay it forward, the genuine
happiness will bounce back to us. Happiness that is beyond what we expected.
