LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET No. 11 DATE ANSWERED:

LESSON 1 Transport Mechanisms

Learning Competency:
• Explain transport mechanisms in cells. (STEM_BIO11/12-Ig-h-13)
• Differentiate exocytosis and endocytosis. (STEM_BIO11/12-Ig-h-14)

Let’s Kick it off!

ACTIVITY 1: Prepping with Terminologies: GUESS THE WORD!

Directions: Using the revealed letters of the word/phrase as the clue, guess
what word/phrase is described in every items.

_A S_ _ _E T_ A_ _ P _ _T 1. Net movement of substances is down the

concentration gradient.
_SM___S 2. Diffusion of water molecules across
semipermeable membrane.
C___N__ PR__EI_S 3. Embedded in the cell membrane that opens or
closes as they respond to stimuli.
ADE_ _SI_ E T_IPH_ _P_A_E 4. The energy currency of the cell.

_ _TI _E T_ A_ _ P _ _T 5. Moving solutes across the membrane up the

concentration gradient.

57
Are you taking it?

ACTIVITY 2: What is happening?

Directions: Observe the picture below. Explain what you think is happening
on the dissolved particles and water in the initial and final state. Then relate
what you observed when you pour juice powder into water or place tea bag in
a cup of water. Your answer should not exceed 7 sentences but not less than
4 sentences.

NOTE: Explanation will be graded according to point scale of 3 to 10.

Cellular Transport
Passive Transport- is the movement of substances across membranes without energy
expenditure.

-Net Movement of Molecules: Higher Concentration to Lower Concentration

(Down the concentration gradient)
a. Diffusion- smaller molecules easily pass-through cell membrane with random motion
but with overall net movement of down the concentration gradient.
b. Osmosis- diffusion of water molecules from the side with higher water concentration
to the side with lower water concentration.
-Tonicity and its effect:

If an animal cell is placed in a:

• Hypertonic Environment/Solution; cell shrinks

• Isotonic Environment/Solution; no net water movement or change in cell size
• Hypotonic Environment/Solution; cell swells or burst

If a plant cell is placed in a:

• Hypertonic Environment/Solution; cell plasmolyzed

• Isotonic Environment/Solution; cell becomes flaccid
• Hypotonic Environment/Solution; cell becomes turgid

c. Facilitated Diffusion- movement of solutes through protein channels down the

concentration gradient.

59
Active Transport- is the movement of substances across membranes requiring energy
expenditure. [Uses energy currency of the cell Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)].

-Net Movement of Molecules: Lower Concentration to Higher Concentration

(Against/Up the concentration gradient)

Bulk Transport- transport mechanisms for larger molecules such as proteins and
polysaccharides.

a. Exocytosis- process of removing materials from the cell through the vesicles that fuse
with the plasma membrane.
b. Endocytosis- a substance outside the cell is captured when the plasma membrane
merges with the substance and engulfs it, entering the cytoplasm while enclosed in a
vesicle.
▪ Phagocytosis- (cell eating) plasma membrane wraps and engulfs undissolved
materials/ substance into the cell.
▪ Pinocytosis- (cell drinking) plasma membrane wraps and engulfs dissolved
materials/ substance into the cell.

60
KEY CONCEPTS

• The cell regulates the entry and exit of substances with the semi-
permeability of the plasma membrane.
• There are number of factors that determine whether a substance can
pass through a cell membrane or not.
• Depending on their size and the functional groups present, molecules
may move across the lipid bilayer via transmembrane protein channels,
or they may be assisted by carrier proteins.
• Channel Proteins are embedded on the plasma membrane that opens or
closes as a response to stimuli.
• Carrier proteins changes shape when triggered by the binding and
release of a substance it transports.

Now Do it!

ACTIVITY 3: Draw the concept

Directions: Focus on the tonicity and its effect mentioned in the previous
section of this activity sheet. Using the concepts, you read and understand:

A. draw an animal cell in each box as placed in different tonic

environment and INDICATE the water movement in/out of the cell
using arrows.

HYPERTONIC ISOTONIC HYPOTONIC

B. draw a plant cell in each box as placed in different tonic environment

INDICATE the water movement in/out of the cell using arrows.

HYPERTONIC ISOTONIC HYPOTONIC

61
Follow up questions:
Directions: Answer the following thoroughly. Your answers should not exceed
7 sentences but not less than 3 sentences.

NOTE: Each answer will be graded according to point scale of 3 to 15.

insight and well-thought ideas corresponding to the topic)

1. A blood cell was placed in a fluid. You observed fluid was coming out
from the cell. In what solution was the cell immersed? What do you
