The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, which evokes both a realistic setting and magical and enigmatic
happenings, is both a fable and a work of magical realism. The work uses mythological and fable-like
events and ties them to socially important concerns. The protagonists frequently possess supernatural
prowess, as seen when Santiago communicates with the elements while attempting to transform

Coelho is currently one of the most widely read Latin American authors, and The Alchemist has evolved
into a modern classic. By urging his readers to go on personal journeys to rediscover themselves, he has
transformed the lives of many people.
