The Angel
of the North

8
poster a of English

It has dominated the

landscape of the North
of England since it was
completed in 1998. But what
is so special about this famous
sculpture? Let’s find out.

The Angel of the North is a

modern sculpture situated in
the North East of England near
the cities of Gateshead and
Newcastle. It was designed by
artist Antony Gormley and it
took 4 years to build.

The artist says that the Angel

represents the past, present
and future: the past 200 years
of coal-mining* in the region;
the future as we move from
an era* of industry to an era
of technology; and all of our
present hopes and fears.
The Angel is one of the region’s
main tourist attractions and it
receives over 150,000 visitors
each year. Because it is very
close to the motorway* which
goes from the North to the
South of England, it is also seen
by 90,000 drivers every day!

The Angel is 20 metres high,

as high as four double-decker*
buses, and its wings are 54
metres wide, similar to the
wings of a jumbo-jet, and
people believe it is the largest
angel sculpture in the world!

Dear

This is a very difficult question!
There is no easy way to tell a
