Lesson 1: The Basic Concepts of Dance

The first thing that the student should learn in order for
him to appropriate and have interest in dance is to know and
understand its concept. Dance is considered the mother of all
arts. To be educated in dance is to become knowledgeable
about its background, classification and function. As the Greek
philosopher Plato once said to sing well and to dance well is
to be well-educated.
What is Dance?
The English word dance is related to French danse,
which is believed to have been derived from the ancient High
German word dansor, meaning to stretch or drag.
According to Richard Krauss, dance is an art
performed by individuals or groups of human beings, existing
in time, space, force and flow, in which the human body is the
instrument and movement is the medium.

Classification of Dance Forms

The following are the basic forms of dance:
1. Ballet

The highly disciplined and modified stage art of ballet

is based on a century-old tradition of movement skills. It has

7
a repertoire today that is drawn from the classical
performance side with the most contemporary themes and
choreographic approaches.
2. Modern Dance
Often referred to as contemporary dance, this highly
individualistic and diverse form of artistic expression began as
a rejection of what its advocates condemned as the formalism
and sterility of traditional ballet.
3. Classical Dance
These are dances with standardized rules and
restriction. The dances are common among Asian countries
where drama, music and dance are closely interrelated.
Relying on symbolic gestures, masks or elaborate make-up
and magnificent costumes, classical dances often narrate
stories based on mythology, historical events and legends.
Performances may last for many hours.
4. Folk Dance
A participatory dance form, folk dance is usually
performed by a group consisting of members of a community;
its steps and partners are not the creation of an identifiable
choreographer but are passed from one generation to
another.
5. Ethnic Dance

This refers to the type of dance performed by

specialized ethnic groups. Such dances tend to be highly
traditional, linked directly to social customs or religious
practices, and stylized in their movement and presentation.

8
6. Ballroom Dance
The most widespread form of participating dance,
ballroom dance ranges from the familiar social dances which
were popular in past decades, such as foxtrot, waltz, tango,
rumba or other Latin American steps, to pulsating and
physically exciting rock and roll or discotheque dances.
7. Exercise Dance
This include several forms of dance which are
commonly performed for fitness purposes but which contain
elements that are distinctly dance like. Examples are zumba
and aerobics.
8. Dance drama
This hybrid form of dance are found on the Broadway,
stage, movies or television. The choreography are usually a
combined elements of drama and dance in any form. It tends
to be bright and highly polished form of glamorous
entertainment that are visually pleasing to a broad audience.
9. Allied Movement Form

This is a choreographed routine performed before an

audience either for entertainment or a recognized sports
event. This includes ice skating, synchronized swimming,
gymnastics aerial dancing. Martial arts such as aikido and
arnis also fits this category.

gather to eat their lunch together and to rest. During this rest peri-
