Potential Benefits of starting a home-based embroidery business
3
How to Start
Starting a home based business with embroidery may be easier
than you think and has numerous benefits.
The first thing you will want to do is choose a name for your business. It is a
good idea to include "embroidery" in your name
so the focus of your business is clear to potential clients.
Get a business license. This is not expensive and the state makes it easy to
obtain. You can apply online in just a few minutes. When you have a business
license, you will be able to purchase "blanks" (plain garments, hats etc..)
from wholesale suppliers. Your income potential greatly increases when you
provide the embroidered goods in addition to the embroidery of a design.
In addition to a state business license, the city you live in may also require a
business license. Check the website of your local municipality.

You are probably already connected to different groups that could use embroidery. What are the
groups and clubs that you are involved with? Groups prefer to work with "one of their own". What
clubs do your immediate family members belong to? What activities do they enjoy? Perhaps they
play soccer, golf or belong to a garden club. Their involvement in various groups like these can
provide an ever increasing list of possible clients.
Next take a look at your extended family and friends, what they do and the hobbies that they have.
Many times letting others know about your new venture will lead to avenues you may not have
expected; a corporate golf tournament, logo business apparel for a friend of a friend, a soccer
club. You name it, the list goes on.
Getting a few clients will lead to many more when you deliver
quality product and great customer service. Be prepared,
you might end up with more business than you expected.

Pricing
Many things need to be considered as you are choosing how you would like to price your products. Things that you will
want to consider are:
• Embroidery - The size, stitch count and time needed to complete a design. In addition, speciality threads and
techniques should be taken into consideration. Make sure to set minimums for embroidery. This may be $6-$10 for
even a short name or initials, you decide what works for you.
• Market - The price that can be charged for something may be different depending on the location of the client.
Example: Embroiderer A lives in a major city and charges $20 to put a first name on a scrub top of fellow employees at
a hospital and she has more business than she can keep up with. Embroiderer B lives in a smaller rural community and
could not get more than $10 for the same product.
• Product - What you have to offer makes a difference. Some things can simply be priced by the stitch count. Using
easy math of $1 per thousand stitches in a design can work in many situations. Many times this is not the case. Take
for example a custom ball cap. A cap that expresses what the wearer wants to say can be worth two to three times
the simple cost of the goods, the market can bear a much higher price. On the flip side, a beautiful lace bookmark
would rarely be able to be sold for $1 per thousand stitches as the price would be far more than one would pay. In this
case, one can only expect to receive what one is willing to pay so load up your hoop with as many will fit, put in a fresh
bobbin and let the machine go to work while you do something else.
• Speciality Products - Other high earning potentials have to do with things that are dear to the heart, commemorate
a special event or capture the irreplaceable. Consider focusing on pets, photos, bridal, quilt labels, boat and car
accessories and other items that are a "one of a kind piece".
• Time - When considering a final price for your products, take into consideration the stitch count, speciality materials,
techniques, the subject matter or need it fills and the overall time it will actually take to complete. If the time and effort
exceeds the simple math of stitch count, then it is important to charge for that time. This may be as simple as deciding
on the hourly wage you would like to make, $20, $50, $75 an hour?
In the end, you are the boss and the decision maker. Set your prices so you and your clients are comfortable with the
cost versus. the product delivered. Remember, someone can always find it cheaper, but can they get the superior
customer service you can offer? The quality of the product and the great way they are treated is what will keep them
coming back again and again and referring your services.

Exceptional Profit Potential
Increase your profits by providing the garments!
For example at full speed you can sew out 10 (6000 stitch) logos in an hour.
At $1 per 1000 stitches, that is $6 per design. This would be $60 an hour.
Add in the cost of goods and see your profits rise for the same hour of time spent.
approximate profit calculator - based on the 6000 stitch design from above*
Wouldn't you rather make $310 and hour instead of $60 and hour? How many hours would you choose to work?

Resources
• When ordering from a wholesaler, your price for the articles are very
economical and the quality is usually very good. Samples are often
available to order at an additional discounted price to see actual
sizing and quality.
• Serving groups with multiple orders is easy since suppliers stock the
same styles and colors year after year. They even have coordinating
styles and colors for children, women and men in a wide range of
sizes.
• You will have a very large range of products that you can offer
to your customers.
• The income you earn when you provide the garment increases your
profit far more than simple embroidery. You are adding the retail
mark up to your charge for time, thread and equipment.

"In 2005 my wife and I visited the Quality Sewing booth at the Puyallup
Fair and became intrigued with the Brother PR embroidery machine.
We decided to purchase one as a hobby to make items for family
and friends. Well our hobby soon turned into a full-blown business.
We purchased a second PR embroidery machine to keep up with the
demands we were receiving for embroidery goods. My wife and I are
very thankful for the guidance we received and the friendships we
have developed over the years with Quality Sewing. Our home-based
embroidery and specialities business has grown over the years and we
are setting ourselves up for a great retirement."
